Question 1: [4 + 4 + 2 = 10 marks]

based on question 3, 2018, 160133

(a) Consider the system of equations

x1 − x3 − 6x4 = 0
2x1 + x2 + x3 + 3x4 = 7
3x2 + x3 + 5x4 = 5

Write the augmented matrix for the system. Use row operations to convert the
matrix to reduced row echelon form (rref), and hence solve the system. Show all of
the steps.

 
0 x 1
(b) Consider the matrix B =  2 1 0  where x 6= 0.
1 0 x1

(i) Assuming that B −1 exists, use the relationship [B|I] ∼ [I|B −1 ] to find the
inverse for B.

(ii) When is B singular, i.e., when does the inverse of B not exist?

(c) Assuming that the matrices W , X, Y and Z are n × n and non-singular, and I
is n × n identity matrix, make X the subject of the following expression.

Y T + I = Y XW −1 Z + W T Z

Simplify your answer.

Question 2: [1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 marks]

Consider the matrices:

 
      1 −2
1 4 y 2 x 0 1 1
A= B= C= D = 7 0 
2 x 0 0 y 5 −3 0
5 1

where x and y are real numbers.

Compute each of the following, where possible or explain why they are undefined:

(a) A + B.

(b) AB.

(c) CD.

(d) DC.

(e) AT + D.

(f) B −1 .

Question 3: [1 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 10 marks]

based on question 3, 2018, 160133

A matrix A and its reduced row echelon form are given as follows:
   
3 1 7 2 1 0 3 1
A =  2 −2 10 4  and rref(A) =  0 1 −2 −1  .
5 7 1 −2 0 0 0 0

Use this information to answer the following questions.

1
(a) Is the column vector u = in the nullspace of A and why?
4

(b) Find a basis for the column space of A.

(c) Find a basis for the row space of A.

(d) Find a basis for the null space of A.

(e) What is the rank of A, and why?

(f) What is the nullity of A, and why?

(g) Express the third column of A as a linear combination of the first two
columns of A.

(h) Are the columns of A linearly independent and why?

(i) Express the third row of A, i.e. [5, 7, 1, −2], as a linear combination of
the vectors [1, 0, 3, 1] and [0, 1, −2, −1].

x x y
R =  y  , S  y   =  x − z  and T = .
y y 5x + y
y−x z 2y

(a) Prove that R is a linear transformation.

(b) Prove that S is a linear transformation.
