Is single-sex school really beneficial to one’s academic success or it will just negatively affect them?
Should boys and girls be taught separately or a coeducational environment would be much better? Well, this
debate was highly argued during the nineteenth century, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s.In fact, the
dispute over whether co-ed schools are better than single-sex schools focuses on which of the two types of
schools provides a more suitable environment for learners to learn and grow holistically. Consequently,
Proponents of single gender education claim that both boys and girls should attend such schools due to the
benefits they gain from them such as academic performance improvement, as well as a better learning and
safer environment. However, it is true that unmixed schools are good but they are definitely not the best
choice, especially when it comes to social skills development, competition and academic success as well.
Some people who were not educated in co-ed schools often find it hard to socialize with and interact
with the opposite sex. In mixed sex schools, on the other hand, girls and boys learn and interact together.
This interaction and familiarity gives the students an opportunity to develop self-esteem, self-confidence.
Interacting with the people of opposite sex gives one courage to interact before any group of people and get
rid of shyness. This fact, again, is supported by studies in social sciences, a research has shown that a person
who learnt in a mixed-sex school or environment tends to have a stronger self esteem and better
communication skills than those who studied in single sex. Another evidence was made by Richard Fabes, a
professor and director of the School of Social and Family Dynamics and ACCES director of operations, that
unless both sexes learn to deal with each other, they will struggle in the real world where men and women
co-exist, especially at work.
Another major advantage of a co-ed school is that it offers the learner a healthy learning environment
(sparks,S.D,15) in which both sexes challenge each other to improve their studies. Automatically, boys will
do all their best to perform better than girls, and girls will also try very hard to outshine the boys in their
academic performance. Besides, the results of an educational experiment concerning this point contrast with
the idea which has suggested that girls in single-sex schools are more competitive than their co-ed
counterparts(ALL-GIRLS SCHOOLS DON'T MAKE GIRLS MORE COMPETITIVE;2014).
Opponents of mixed schools claim that when the two genders are separated , they are more likely to perform better
as they are more comfortable .Well, this can be partially true but it is still inaccurate as it is not applied on all learners
,using data from the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment.“boys can significantly improve their scores
when their classroom composition is 60% or higher for the opposite gender. The scores are higher for girls in this
structure as well”,said Margriet van Hek, who works as a sociologist at Utrecht University.

In sum, , mixed schools would be a better choice than the unmixed ones as they help the to create a strong social
personality, to improve competiveness and to succeed academically . Although there are some disadvantages to the
co-ed education system when compared to the single-sex education system, its advantages greatly exceed the
negatives. Learners need to be aware that we are living in a competitive zone. Understanding the similarities and
differences that exist between each individual will make it easier to form relationships ,challenge others and find
moments of success.
