4 areas of the Cebu City Heritage District
Area 1: Old Cebu in San Nicolas Area

Spanish colonization started in 1565,


when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the head
of the expedition, landed on Cebu
island, April 17, 1565. He established a
Spanish settlement in San Nicolas,
precisely the vicinity of the San Nicolas
Church, which is across the Pasil Fish
Market and a block from Tabo-an. It is
considered as the original landing site
of Legazpi, and became the embryo of a
settlement.
Area 1: Downtown area

The Spanish Quarters


When Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived
in Cebu, the city was intended to serve
as their colony's base and capital. The
Spaniards allotted a fort, church and
Spanish quarters (Mojares, 1991).

Area 2: Downtown area

The American Port Development


The downtown area of Cebu, although
mostly consisted of spanish influenced
structures, have some highly significant
structures that were built during the
American period, some of the important
structures include the National Museum
of the Philippines, the Maritima Ruins,
and the Vision Theater in colon street.
Area 3: Parian area

One of the many parians in the nation is


the Parian district in Cebu City. In the
16th century, it was a small ghetto of
Chinese businessmen but during the
boom of 19th-century commerce,
Parian's identity changed to a market
and trading hub. By the 20th century,
the wealthiest founding families of Cebu
lived there.

Spanish cession of the Philippines to


the United States under the terms of the
Treaty of Paris put an end to the war in
1898. Cebu grew more inland during the
American rule, and in the 1900s the
Cebu Central Railway was built, and
every new train station along the
railroad opened up fresh business
opportunities, resulting in the
development of new towns.

Pedestrianized Street: Colon Cebu Art Market
Pedestrianizing a street in colon will help improve pedestrian
accessibility and mobility, increase the number of retail and other
economic activity in the area, or enhance the local environment's
appeal in terms of aesthetics, air pollution, noise, and motor
vehicle collisions. The incorporation of an art market will also give
importance and recognition in the arts, culture, and local products
of Cebu and Philippines, and cultivate a sense of cultural identity.
The art market can boost the economy's revenue, develop the
infrastructures of a country, and create hundreds of jobs. With the
initial ideas and references presented below.

Adaptive Reuse: The Compania Maritima Building
as Cebu Maritime Museum
"We understand that the city has its plan for the development of
the Compania Maritima building into some sort of a museum, which
is similar to the plan of the CPA to convert it into a maritime
museum, while the other areas in the vicinity shall be developed
into port-related businesses.

Looking back,

The cultural and commercial core of the central Visayan region, Cebu was opened to
foreign trade in 1860. Cebu was the trading port that merchants from China,
Thailand, East Indies and Arabia kingdom had visited.

Cebu had been the capital in the Philippines during 6 years after Spanish immigrated
in Cebu. After Spanish–American War in 1898, American governments set up
infrastructure during the under rule of America and Cebu have developed as the
trade center.

The island’s central position meant that it was an ideal trade outpost. Ships from
Luzon will have to pass through Cebu to trade, while Chinese vessels going to and
from Butuan will have to stop over the island. Cebu was a strategic economic
chokepoint
Neglection and importance,

Maritime museums are among the Cinderellas of the museums world, nowhere more
so than in Asia, where they are conspicuous by their absence.

For the sea has always been of great importance to human affairs, and especially to
the lives of the peoples of Southeast Asia.

Precisely because Asia and Southeast Asia have been so ill‐served by the historical
record, dominated as it has been by Eurocentric accounts, its seagoing, naval
architectural, navigational and other achievements are poorly known not least, as
often as not, to the majority of the inhabitants of today’s Southeast Asia.

Hong Kong has 2 maritime museums, while Denmark has 23

heritage building

May be included in 'Gabii sa Kabilin' night tour or any other tour and gain tourism
prospects
