Science
1st Quarter – Hybrid Module 2
(Week 2 & 3)

SDO Taguig City and Pateros

Let’s Learn

This module was written and designed to help students or learners easily
understand the basic concepts about elements and compounds.

Elements are the simplest pure substance and there are 118 elements that
have been discovered, though only 88 are naturally occurring. It is made of only one
kind of material, and they cannot be broken down into simpler substance without
losing their identity. While compounds are pure substances made up of more than
one element. Unlike elements, compound can be broken down into simpler
substances that can happen through a chemical reaction

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

• Lesson I – History and Basis of Naming Elements and compounds

• Lesson II – Elements and Compounds

After going through this module, you are expected to:

• Differentiate elements from compounds based on their composition from the
given chemical names and formulas of elements and compounds;
• Make a timeline of the history and basis of naming the element;
• Identify elements and compounds from food labels and other products
available at home, market, and the community;
• Discover the important elements and compounds that are useful to humans;
• Create a slam book type introducing one element and one compound in the
class (ex. Name: Gold; Nickname: Au; Date of Birth: Year of discovery; Likes
or Dislikes, etc.); and
• Make a chart, poster, or multimedia presentation of common elements and
compounds showing their symbols, names and uses.

Lesson

1 History and Basis of Naming

Elements and Compounds

Let’s Recall
Direction: Using your periodic table, complete the table below.

5
Let’s Explore
Direction: Study the elements symbol then choose the correct Latin names from the list in the box.
Write your answer on the third column of the table.
Cuprum Argentum
Aurum Stannum
Ferrum Plumbium

English Name Symbol Latin Name

Tin Sn 1.
Gold Au 2.
Iron Fe 3.
Copper Cu 4.
Silver Ag 5.

Let’s Elaborate

There are several elements known in the current time. Thanks to the works of
our early scientists. They were able to systematically organize all these elements in
what we call the periodic table of elements or sometimes simply referred as periodic
table. You will find one at the last page of this module. Amazingly, scientist was able
to logically arrange all the elements in the periodic table. This only means that there is
no need to memorize the periodic table, but it is an advantage to be familiar with it.

History & Naming of the Elements

• Aristotle believed that there were four elements which are: air, water, fire,
and earth.
• Alchemist tried to convert “cheap” metals like lead into gold. In doing so, they
developed equipment and techniques that enables them to discover and purify
substance.
• Berzelius proposed the elements symbol consisting of the first two letters of
the element’s Latin name. In the current periodic table that we are using
nowadays, each symbol still consists of a letter or two from the element’s name
but most of the symbols are derived from its English names instead of the Latin
names.
• In the year 1809, at least 47 elements were discovered, and scientists began
to see patterns in the characteristics.
• In 1863, English chemist John Newlands divided the elements into 11 groups
based on characteristics, then discovered 56 elements.
• In 1869, Russian chemist, Dimitri Mendeleev, started the development of
the periodic table, arranging chemical elements by atomic mass. The chemist
predicted the discovery of other elements, and left spaces open in his periodic
table for them.

6
Did you ever wonder how elements get their name?
Some of the names of the elements come from the Latin word. These elements were found
naturally and were easy for people in ancient times to extract and use; elements included are
(refer to table 1 below).
Table 1: Elements Name
English Name Symbol Latin Name
Lead Pb Plumbium
Iron Fe Ferrum
Copper Cu Cuprum
Tin Sn Stannum
Silver Ag Argentum
Gold Au Aurum

While other elements were named after a compound from, they were isolated (example:
Nickel was named after the German word Kufernickel). Scientist discovered helium when they
were studying a solar eclipse and saw an unexpected line in an emission spectrum; therefore,
helium was named after the Greek word helios means sun. And scientist names the elements
uranium, neptunium, and plutonium after planets. Then there are elements named after a
mythological figure just like thorium drives its name from Thor, the Norse god of thunder.
More recently discovered elements have names that represents places. Scientist named
the elements yttrium, ytterbium, terbium, and erbium for Ytterby, Sweden as they were all
found there in a mine. Many elements were named after the famous scientist like einsteinium
(Albert Einstein), curium (Marie and Pierre Curie), mendelevium (Dimitri Mendeleev),
nobelium (Alfred Nobel), and rutherfordium (Ernest Rutherford).

ELEMENTS and COMPOUNDS

Table 2: Difference between elements and compounds

ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS
• Made up of more than one

simpler substance without losing substances that can happen
its identity through a chemical reaction

Made up of molecules (2 or more
• Made up of one type of atom/s type of atoms chemically
bonded).
Examples: (Symbol – Name) Examples: (Formula – Name)
• O – Oxygen • CO2 – Carbon dioxide
• H – Hydrogen • NaCl – Sodium chloride
• He – Helium • H2O – water

Let’s Dig In

Lesson

2 Elements and Compounds

Let’s Recall

The Periodic Table of Elements contains all the following information like the example
below.

Direction: Complete the missing information for each of the following elements
from the periodic table.

Let’s Explore

Direction: This nutrition facts that you see in the picture below can mostly be
seen in the food products that you usually bought in the market. Study the picture
and write the elements and compounds that are present.

ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS

1. 2.

9
Let’s Elaborate

Atom is the smallest particle of an element and cannot be broken down into
simpler substance without losing their identity. In the universe, hydrogen makes up
75% of all matter, helium makes up about 20% and oxygen being the 3rd (5%) most
abundant element. And all the other elements are relatively rare in the universe.

Unlike elements, compounds can be broken down to simpler substance through

the process called electrolysis or chemical reaction. A shorthand way of representing
compound is that, if chemical symbols are the ‘letters’, these are the‘words. Sometimes,
the formula represents a molecule of a single element, and this are called diatomic
molecules.

Table 3: List of Common Compounds

There are lots of elements present in the food you eat —whether it is raw like;
banana or those processed like banana chips, biscuits, milk, and juice. These are
mostly the nutrients that the human body needs to function well. Some of these are
calcium, zinc, and magnesium.
The Nutrition Facts in every food product is a list of the
different nutrients provided with their corresponding
percentage. And these materials are
the sources of the nutrients. (Beside
are examples of nutrition facts)
In our everyday living, there
are so many elements and
compounds that are so essential to
us and some of those kept us alive
because without those we cannot survive. Some gives us nutrients that mostly came
from the food that we eat, and some are in our surroundings that keeps us going.
The table below shows some of the elements essential to our life.
