EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Being a part of the youth is exciting, yet stressful. It is mentioned to
be the most important time of life, yet burdening to the teenager.
This is the age of pre-maturity where the teenager experiences self-
actualization, rapid physical changes, awakening sexuality, the urge
for autonomy, and questions of identity. This is a good thing! It’s a
sign that you are growing! However, they also experience another
set of interpersonal, social, and academic problems. Hence, these
rapid changes and experiences can lead to stress.

How do they cope with it? Sometimes anger, avoidance, and denial
seem like the only coping skills teens have. It all comes down to the
adaption to the environment and parenting techniques the teenager
faced during childhood. These factors cause them to utilize coping
mechanisms typically unhealthy ones. As a result, young individual
cannot directly solve their problems without distracting themselves
with these coping mechanisms. In the meantime, some of these
coping mechanisms majorly affect their health.
WELCOME MESSAGE
BACKGROUND
Before we proceed to our main topic, we must have an overview
of coping mechanisms. Here we will talk about relevant
information and background information such as stressors,
development, and other topics about coping mechanisms

BASIC DEFINITION
A coping mechanism, coping behavior, or coping strategy, is a
technique used by an individual to ease and basically to "cope"
during a painful or stressful situation. There are positive coping
mechanisms that produce a positive outcome. On the other
hand, there are also negative ones that are known to be
destructive to one's health, producing a bad outcome
HOW DID IT DEVELOP?
We usually begin to perceive various coping mechanisms as young
children. As we grow older, we begin to implement those coping
mechanisms because, whether healthy or unhealthy, they seem
normal. Fortunately, some treatments explore this field of a
person’s life, which can help them escape Along with that, there
other ways these can develop as displayed:

HOWEVER, WHAT ARE THEIR USUAL COPING MECHANISMS CURRENTLY?
CASE EVALUATION
When youth faces a stressful or painful situation,
they may default to unhealthy coping mechanisms
because they don't have the initial skills to
overcome this. Compared to healthy coping
mechanisms, unhealthy coping mechanisms are
typically chosen because of their short-term effect
and overwhelming pain, These are the common
unhealthy coping mechanisms.

THE UNHEALTHY COPING MECHANISMS

AVOIDANCE SUBSTANCE ABUSE
DISORDERED EATING SELF-HARM
DISPLACEMENT ENTERTAINMENT OVERUSE

Now let us discuss these unhealthy coping

mechanisms in detail. The advantages and
disadvantages, and the positive and negative effects
AVOIDANCE
COPING
WHAT IS THIS?
Avoidance coping straight out defines as altogether
avoiding the situation. Some people use cognitive
avoidance strategies to distract themselves, ignore
problems, or avoid dealing with their stress. Others rely on
behavioral avoidance strategies like avoiding people,
places, and situations that cause stress or anxiety.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

It decreases short-term anxiety and increases long-term anxiety.
It is a coping mechanism that you may use to reduce the adverse effects of
trauma, such as distressing thoughts and feelings.
It involves trying to avoid stressors rather than dealing with them.
May convert to social isolation.
TAKEAWAY:
While avoidance brings immediate relief, learning to confront your worries is
the best way forward in the long run.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE
WHAT IS THIS?
Substance abuse is what is generalized as smoking cigarettes, over-
consumption of alcohol, and overuse of drug medications. They are
all used to help cope with a stressful situation, in this case, the
individual is reliant on an object to cope with their problems

WHAT DOES IT DO?

An instant method of stress relief, numbing pain, relaxation,
and other positive feelings.
It possesses various negative health implications such as
cancer, heart disease, stroke, and mental health conditions, and
overall greatly weakens the immune system.
May cover a large amount of your personal financial expenses
May convert to extreme substance addiction where it comes to
the point where they can't live without it.
TAKEAWAY:
If we look at it from this perspective, we shouldn't be over-reliant on mere
objects of this world. It does provide some short-term positive effects, but it
hugely compromises one's physical and mental health. The usage of drugs,
cigarettes, and alcohol is unhealthy and it always is no matter how much it helps
EATING DISORDERS
WHAT IS THIS?
Eating disorders are serious conditions related to persistent
eating behaviors that negatively impact your health, your
emotions and your ability to function in important areas of life.
The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa,
bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
It starts with negative self-talk and criticisms towards one's body, negatively
affecting one's mental and emotional state
As the internal action starts acting externally, they start to damage one's
physical state whether overeating, undereating and any form
It can harm a person's body, lead to drug abuse, and may even take over
one's social life because of his/her insecurities
Maladaptive eating patterns begin to take on a life of their own and can be
difficult to control.
TAKEAWAY:
Many people do not recognize eating disorders as mental health conditions, and
therefore do not always recognize the psychological impact that eating disorders
can have. In addition, let us constantly remind ourselves that we are already
perfect the way we are. It's all in our minds, not our bodies!
SELF-HARM
WHAT IS THIS?

Self-harm is defined as the act of someone hurting

themselves intentionally. Often people who self-harm
won’t tell their family or friends and will harm themselves
in places that they can cover up.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

It allows a person to hurt themselves on purpose.
It can change emotional pain into physical.
It can cause more damage to someone's health and safety than
they may have intended and may cause accidental suicide.
No good can come out of this. It can only make you feel worse.

TAKEAWAY:
"Your body isn't paper. Don't cut it."
DISPLACEMENT
WHAT IS THIS?

Displacement is a defense mechanism that involves an

individual transferring negative feelings from one person or
thing to another through angry outbursts, verbal abuse, and
physical abuse. Bullying can also stem from this.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

It redirects a negative emotion from its source to a less threatening
recipient.
It involves an individual transferring negative feelings from one person or
thing to another.
They lose assets and livelihoods and are unable to plan their future.
The other person will have to suffer the consequences of your action.
Bonds between the receivant may be worsened

TAKEAWAY:
Although displacement may seem like a normal and healthy thing to do, the
other person which is the receiving is at sake which isn't beneficial. Rather than
having these outbursts, it's better to talk to them or someone else about your
feelings and practice proper emotion management.
ENTERTAINMENT OVERUSE
WHAT IS THIS?

As part of modern-day life, a significant amount of time is spent

online. This involves both study and work-related activities and also
social and entertainment spheres. Internet overuse refers to excessive
time spent online at the expense of other things. Gaming overuse can
also be stemmed from this
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Mood swings including feeling restless, irritable, anxious
or depressed when offline or attempting to cut down
internet usage
Significantly affecting or putting at risk relationships,
studies and work because of internet use.
It can lead to obesity, sleep problems, chronic neck and
back problems, depression, anxiety and lower test scores
in children.
May convert to addiction.
TAKEAWAY:
The use of social media and gaming have increased especially during the pandemic and today's modern
age of course. Although these are forms of coping mechanisms that are in fact healthy, we have to
make sure they aren't getting in the way of more personal things in life or affect our physical health.
PROPOSED SOLUTIONS
Although it may be already too late since several consequences have gone beyond the limit to resolving these problems. Fortunately, a
person who grew up learning unhealthy coping mechanisms isn’t “stuck” in employing these strategies for the rest of their lives. In the
age of youth, as they mature, their brains grow and develop which assists them to respond to stress with greater flexibility. As their brain
develops, so does their capacity to reason, plan, and think in the bird's eye view. These are three effective solutions for the youth.

to respond to them appropriately.
CONCLUSION
Being a teenager is stressful for many reasons. They
mention that the age of youth is the most important time
of life, but it seems to be the most stressful. Not to
mention that this timeline of life aligns with high school
education, experiencing a broad amount of physical, emotional,
social, intrapersonal, mental and neurological changes. Let us
not forget all these problems and issues are a simply an essential part of
life where everything is perceived as an opportunity to
reflect and grow. However, unhealthy coping mechanisms may interfere with that particular opportunity.
These common coping mechanisms include avoidance coping, substance abuse, eating disorders, self-
harm, emotional displacement, and entertainment overuse. We need to clarify that unhealthy coping mechanisms
basically make the situation much worse, jeopardizing your own physical health and being a burden to others. Although
these may bring positive effects like a an effective stress-reliever and distraction, these are SHORT-TERM.
At the end of the day, we will have to approach the problem itself, rather than busying ourselves to avoid it. Therefore, there are
three formulated solutions. Choosing better-coping mechanisms or healthy coping mechanisms which include problem-focused
strategies, emotion-focused strategies, meaning-making, social support, and religious coping. Our mentioned coping
mechanisms are practical coping skills that youth can incorporate into their lives on a daily basis. In addition, parents will have
to play an essential role in monitoring their children's behavior in order to help them when needed especially during school
hours. Lastly, if all of these aren't enough, then teens need integrated treatment that includes clinical therapy as well as
learning new coping strategies especially if they have PTSD, depression, or other severe mental condition,
IMPLEMENTATION
The primary goal will be to educate and promote healthy coping mechanisms at school. To achieve this,
student leaders will be organizing meetings with teachers to discuss the issue, as well as developing
strategies for providing support to their peers. This will involve creating workshops on emotional
regulation, healthy communication, and other topics that are relevant to the issue. Additionally, student
leaders will be responsible for creating a safe and supportive environment where students can talk
openly about their struggles and find help.

To ensure responsible parenting, parents will be encouraged to attend the workshops and seminars
developed by the student leaders. Additionally, parents will be encouraged to be more involved in their
children’s lives, and to be available to talk and listen when needed. Furthermore, parents will be
informed about the mental health resources available to their children and encouraged to help them
access them.

Finally, access to therapy will be essential in tackling the issue of unhealthy coping mechanisms. To
ensure that all students have access to the help they need, the school will partner with local mental
health providers to establish a system of referrals. This will involve setting up a network of therapists
and counselors who can provide guidance and support to students in need.

By establishing an effective system of education, support, and resources, this plan will help students
develop healthier coping strategies, and provide them with the help they need when facing difficult times.
