SkillsUSA Reflection

Our initial concepts were a regional, national, and sports story. The regional story was

about masks possibly being mandated again in Paterson, New Jersey. The national story was

about the Golden Globes and Jenna Ortega being a role model for young hispanic people. Lastly,

the sports story was about Lionel Messi and his first World Cup victory. We wrote scripts about

these topics to practice news writing.

The pre-production phase for news is very different from film. Film is more writing about

fictional stories, and news MUST be factual and objective. There are also different effects, titles,

and materials you use.For this kind of pre-production you must find and organize your b-roll,

create titles for your hosts, and intro visuals. Mainly for pre-production we worked on our script.

We utilized transitional words and intros that opened what we were going to speak about in the

main portion. We also used the source StoryBlocks and other news websites/videos to find b-roll

that matched our script. One of the only obstacles I faced was not being very familiar with news

writing. But watching news and reading articles helped me get used to the tone, format, and just

overall thing.

The production phase happened when we were actually at the competition. We were

given ten minutes to set up. This means putting on mics, adjusting cameras and preparing the
Franco 2

program for the cameras. Once we started we had ten minutes to get a good take. One of the

obstacles was the difference in equipment. The cameras were different, the teleprompter was

smaller, and the mics were different. The teleprompter’s words were larger than what I was used

to, so the speed of it had to be adjusted. I read too fast because I was used to a few sentences

being on the teleprompter at once, but instead it was a few words. I tried to get as used to it as I

could as quickly as I could. During production you just had to adjust quickly because the time

was so limited. I think Kendall and I’s projection and speaking abilities were good. We had

practiced a lot and were used to the script. I think Jocelyn set up the cameras well and did a great

job as floor manager. I think the hardest job was Elian’s because he had completely different

equipment to work with and if he made mistakes they were more obvious.

The post-production phase for SkillsUSA just consisted of us going into another room

and watching our takes. We talked about what mistakes we made and what was good about our

takes. We had to sit and evaluate which take could be a contender for our final submission. Then

we had to decide as a team which one we would submit.

My favorite part of the production process was pre-production and actually going to the

competition. I liked practicing a lot and seeing myself get better. I think I had had a great team

and we all gave each other constructive criticism without getting offended. But we also all

improved greatly. The whole experience made me more interested in television. I have been split

between pursuing film mainly or television/news production mainly. I like the technicality of

news/television production and all of the aspects of it. I love how excited we got after having a
Franco 3

good take after practicing over and over. All in all, I liked getting better at this component of

film.

I think a strength of mine was energy and tone. I thought I did a good job at starting out

with good energy, and I think my tone of voice matched what I was saying. I think one of my

weaknesses was consistency. I found it easy for myself to start sounding like I was just reading

and not delivering news. I sounded uninterested and robotic. I think to improve this I have to

practice reading scripts and maintaining my tone during it. I also think a weakness was stumbling

and not recovering well. After I stuttered everything just completely left my brain and it was

difficult for me to continue without sounding affected by it. To improve this, again I have to keep

reading scripts and trying to not make mistakes. But if I do, I have to move on and focus on what

I am saying and delivering the news.
