FIELD STUDY 1 LEARNING EPISODE CREATING AN

APPROPRIATE LEANING
ENVIRONMENT

FS 1 5

SPARK Your Interest

 This learning Episode provides an opportunity to examine how classrooms are
structured or designed to allow everyone’s maximum participation for effective
learning. You should be able to examine how classroom management practices affect
learning. This Episode enhances the application of the theories learned in the following
professional subjects such as Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching and The Child
and Adolescent Learners and Learning Principles.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcome

At the end of this episode, I must be able to:
 Plan on how to manage time, space, and resource: and
 Provide a learner environment appropriate to the learners and conducive to learning.

REVISIT the Learning Essentials

The classroom climate that is conducive for learning is one that is non-threatening yet
business-like. It is a classroom where, when creating audio-visual presentations, the following
are observed:
 Specific classroom rules and procedures are clear.
 Classroom rules and procedures are discussed within the first few days of the school.
 Students are involved in the design of rules and procedures.
 Techniques to acknowledge and reinforce acceptable behavior are employed.
 Clear limits for unacceptable behavior are established and negative consequences for
such are communicated.
 Classroom processes are democratic.

ACTIVITY 5.1 Managing Time, Space and Learning Resources
Resource teacher: Ms. Christine Faith Buscano
School: BPNHS Grade/Year Level: 7- Cristal Subject Area: English Date:

OBSERVE
Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your observations.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
The class is composed of Grade 8 students with varied characteristics. 12-13 years old are
clumsy and noisy while 14-16 years old most of them are quiet. They are both approachable and
nice. hey are also respectful when approaching their teachers and classmates. Their behavior
shows how they are still young and still need guidance from their teacher and parents.

2. How many boys are there? How many girls?

Girls are 9 and boys are 31

3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
Most of the Grade 7 students are not attentive and sometimes they are not aware of their
behavior.

4. Can the learners already work independently?

Some students can work independently and some student needs a guide of teachers. They
are also eager to learn and try their best to give an in depth answer in oral activities.

5. Describe their span of attention.

About 40% of the class are not paying attention, the rest of the class are focused.

ANALYZE

Analyze and answer these questions on observed classroom management practices. It

is also good to ask the teacher for additional information, so you can validate your
observation. Write your notes below; and then organize your data in the Table that follows.

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specifics purposes (storage of teaching aids, books,
student’s belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a difference if these
areas for specific purposes are not present?
The set o up of the classroom is a typical Philippine Highschool style where green board
and white board placed at the front. Storage of teachers aids place at the table at the back. The
books placed in bookshelf at the back. There is a small cabinet where some of the old
projects/output of previous students are displayed. It is organized and still promotes positive
learning among students.
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the classroom rules? List them down. Do these
REFLECT
Reflection as a future teacher.
1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?

8.What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)
The teacher reminds students to follow the classroom rules. She also addresses problems
and wrong behavior of the students in a friendly manner, she talks to student calmly. She also
gives rewards or extra point to those who participate and give motivation to the students who are
not active in class.

Enforcing positive discipline will help my future students to become a well-mannered

person. We can’t avoid the fact that there are some unpredictable situations that would
challenge us as a teacher. There is a need to enforce a positive discipline among
students to positively address the conflicts that may arise in the classroom without
being too harsh on students. Once they reinforce positive behavior they can eliminate
unwanted reactions from their classmates. The students will be responsible for their
actions, to be rational, and critical and decide smartly in different situations.

favorable outcome.
ANALYZE
1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?
Classroom organization and routine have a positive impact on learner behavior by
making them more responsible and allowing them to better manage their learning. It
also boosts their confidence, regulates their behavior, and fosters positive relationships
in the classroom. Students may also be able to develop self-control, which may reduce
their chances of failing their classes.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization
and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
The following theories and principles must be considered by the teacher when
designing classroom organization and routine:
1. Behaviorist theory or Behaviorism is a theory that focuses on students' behaviors,
both positive and negative.
2. Humanist theory or Humanism that emphasizes human capabilities, goals, learning
styles, and preferences of students.
3. Democratic theory in which students are given opportunities to participate in
learning decision-making as well as equal opportunities to choose their own
educational path.
4. Psychoanalytic theory requires teachers to consider students' thoughts, feelings,
and experiences, whether consciously or subconsciously.
5. Cognitive theory should also be considered in order to focus on the learners'
mental processes and knowledge construction.
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In
motivating students? Why were they effective?
The following are some behavioral strategies that teachers can use to effectively manage or
motivate students' behavior:
1. Organize a new learner-centered classroom space in which students can be more
independent and self-reliant.
2. In order to support different types of learners, use a wide range of tools, materials,
approaches, and strategies in your teaching.
3. Create classroom expectations or simple classroom rules that students can follow.

REFLECT
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in future. In what grade year level do you
see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level Why?
In the near future, I hope to teach junior high students in my English class. I will begin
my class with a prayer, which is very important to me. To be followed by questions about how
they are doing, whether they are happy, how they feel about our subject, and so on. These
questions will assist me in determining the current state of students' learning in my classes. If
they ever told me how they feel about learning my subject, I can easily figure out what
strategies I need to implement to meet their needs. Then there are the usual procedures such as
attendance, motivational activity, and actual discussion with constant questioning to ensure
comprehension.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you
choose these rules?
1. Maintain Silence. If you want to speak, raise your hand. - To reduce loud
noises.
2. Be punctual. - To help them understand the importance of punctuality.
3. Be courteous. - A general rule that everyone should follow
4.
3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?
Students must be involved in the creation of classroom rules in order to build to their
leadership skills and to understand the importance of being accountable for their own actions
and behavior. It also enables for cooperation between students and teachers in establishing the
rules that must be followed. Making the rules, on the other hand, should be guided by teachers
because they are the ones who know the regulations and how to assist well in addressing the
rules to include.

LINK THEORY TO PRACTICE

Direction: Read the items given below and encircle the correct answer.

1. Focusing on natural consequences of students . Which of the following teacher

statements demonstrates focusing on natural consequences ?
A. “Those who were noisy today during seatwork will not be allowed to play
games in the computer later”.
B. If it takes you to longer finish the seatwork , because time is wasted with
chatting, then we wont have time to go to the playground anymore.”
C. Those who are well-behaved in class well be given plus 5 points in the quiz.
D. If you get a 95 of grade or higher in the first two assignments ,you will be
exempted from the 3rd assignment .
2. Learners are more likely to internalize and follow classroom rules when________.
A. the teacher clearly explain the rule she prepared
B. the learners know the punishment for not following the rules
C. the learners participate in the rule making process .
D. the teacher gives additional points for those who follow the rules
3. For a teacher to establish and maintain consistent standard of learners behavior ,they
should do all EXCEPT___________.
A.Give immediate feedback to reinforce appropriate behavior of learners
B.Be open to exceptions each time a learner misbehaves in class
C.Communicate and enforce school policies and procedures clearly and consistently
D.Handle behavior problems promptly and with due respect to learner’s rights
