CHAPTER 01

Introduction
The Venezuelan economy is on the brink of collapse
Country in a Nutshell

Venezuela ─ a state of crisis

Venezuela in South America is endowed with vast oil and mineral deposits such as
coal, iron ore, bauxite, and gold. However, the once-flourishing country is
experiencing a period of heavy corruption, failed government policies, and
resultant public protests, which along with falling oil prices has put Venezuela’s
economy on the brink of collapse. Some 3 million Venezuelans have fled the
country ever since the crisis began. The country’s inflation rate stood at 438.12% at
the end of 2017 and shot all the way up to 6,500% by the end of 2020. This
situation, described by The New York Times as “the single largest economic collapse
outside of war” has come about mainly due to mismanagement of the country’s oil
industry, monetization of large public deficits, state control of the economy, and
organized crime.

• The National TV ignores the opposition, covering only the ruling party

• In 2018, the city of Caracas had the highest homicide rate and was followed by
Guyana and Ciudad Bolivar

Insights into the grocery structure and shopping behavior in Venezuela
Retail Structure: National Typic Grocery Structure

Insights into a national typic grocery structure

The grocery structure in Venezuela is characterized by convenience stores and

handcarts. The most visited supermarkets are those of national chains, but street
vendors are very common everywhere.

In Venezuela, people tend to buy at supermarkets, but nowadays their preferences

depend mainly on the prices and the existence of the products.

Due to the low availability of products, consumers often need to shop at different
stores in order to satisfy their needs. Additionally, people usually go shopping every
day because of hyperinflation and low product availability.
