Q1 Design the duct size of A, C and E by using Equal friction method for a typical duct layout

shown in the following figure. Take the velocity of air in the main duct (A) as 8 m/s. Also find the
FTP required and determine diameter of B so that no dampering is required.
.

pf/L=(2.268x10-3(Q)1.852)/(D)4.973 mm of H2O/m
Various dynamic losses are given by:
For elbow 0.25 pv
Dynamic loss in branch: 0.45 pv
Fitting loss = 0.25 x differences of velocity pressure

Q2. In the air duct system, as shown in Figure, air enters at A with a static pressure of 7.5 mm of
water. The branch at B is 15 m long and delivers 120 m3 /min. The branch at C is 22.5 m long and
delivers 140 m3/min. At the end D of the main duct, the air delivered is 200 m3/min.
Using friction chart and equal pressure drop method, determine the correct diameter and velocity
pressures in lengths, AB, BC, CD, branch BE and branch CR Consider friction losses only.
Q3. A circular duct of 40 cm is selected to carry air in an air conditioned 06 space at a velocity of
440 m/min to keep the noise level at desired level. If this duct is replaced by a rectangular duct of
aspect ratio of 1.5, find out the size of rectangular duct for equal friction method when (a) the
velocity of air in two ducts is same, (b) the discharge rate of air in two ducts is same
Q4. A fan gives a static pressure of 290 Pa with a velocity of 800 m/min at its outlet while
delivering a quantity of 120 m3/ min of air. The inlet static pressure and velocity are200 Pa and
500m/min respectively. Calculate (1) Total head developed (2) Power required if fan mechanical
efficiency = 75%
Q5. A duct of rectangular cross-section 600mm * 400mm carries 90m3/min of air having density
of 1.2 kg/m3. Determine the equivalent diameter of the circular duct :
i. When the quantity of air carries in both the cases is same; and
ii. When velocity of air in both the cases is same.
Take friction factor = 0.011. Also calculate pressure loss per 100m length of duct.
