Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are important processes in living things. Photosynthesis converts sunlight into energy while cellular respiration releases energy from food.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and energy in the form of glucose (food). Cellular respiration is the process by which living cells generate energy by breaking down glucose and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of ATP.

Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen and glucose using sunlight. Cellular respiration uses oxygen and glucose to produce carbon dioxide and water to release energy. Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts while cellular respiration occurs in mitochondria.

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Area

Quarter First

I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of… •

What is the structure and function of plant parts and
organelles involved in photosynthesis and; what is the
structure and function of mitochondrion as the main
organelle involved in respiration

B. Performance Standards The learners should be able to…

design and conduct an investigation to provide
evidence that plants can manufacture their
own food.

C. Learning Competencies Learning Competency: differentiate basic features and

or Objectives importance of photosynthesis and respiration
Code: S9LT-lg-j31

Learning Objectives:
At the end of an hour’s lesson, the students will be able
to:
C – differentiate basic features and importance of
photosynthesis and cellular respiration
P – Compare and contrast the process of
photosynthesis and cellular respiration
A – examine the importance of interdependence

II. CONTENT Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Values to be Integrated Interdependence

Value Concept Interdependence or the mutual reliance and
interconnectedness on one another. The process of relying
on each other for support. The values of interdependence
recognize the value of the individual, whether it is a person
or agency, while at the same time recognizing that there is
value in an integrated, collaborative approach.

V. PROCEDURE
A. Elicit After the teacher establishes the classroom rules and
(Recall/Priming/Drill) regulations, a short recall of the previous lesson will be
made to establish the continuity of learning.

We have learned about:

Species Extinction
- The failure of organisms to adjust to abrupt changes
in the environment

Important factor:

Rapid Human Modification - Human beings are modifying

the natural environment by building factories, cutting trees,
making dams, inventing objects like cars and air
conditioners which pollute the air, polluting rivers and
increasing activities which contribute to climate change.

Extinct Animals that live in our country such as Philippine

Rhinoceros, Sirenia Sea Cow, and Dwarf Buffalo.

At the end of the lesson, we learned that:

All species play a vital role in the ecosystem through the

food web

B. Engage Activity#1: What do we need?

(Establish and/or present
lesson goals/Connect) Procedure: The students will look and observe the
pictures presented on the board and think about what
are the needs of the following living things in order to
survive.

After the activity, the class will be asked about their

observation of the activity and also answer the guide
questions.
1. Human

Animals

2. Plants
Guide Questions:

1. What have you observed among the needs of the

following living - C
2. Why do you think these resources are important in
order to sustain life on Earth?
3. What do you think will happen if one of these needs
is gone? - C
4. What do you think this relationship shows about life
on Earth? - Ain our life?- A
5. What do you think is the importance of
interdependence-A
6. How will you appreciate interdependence with
others? - A

C. Explore Activity #2: Think about it.

(Scientific
Inquiry/Common Direction: Look and observe the following pictures below
Experience) and answer the following questions,

1. Think about what we need to be able to perform

the following activities.
Note: In order to perform these activities we need
energy — or the capacity to do work.

2. How do we obtain energy?

Answer: Through eating.
Organisms that depend on other organisms for food are
heterotrophs. It includes animals and also humans.

What about plants where do they obtain energy?

Answer: Through sunlight. Plants and other organisms who

are capable of making their food are called Autotrophs.

D. Explain/Execute Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

(Guide students in discussing Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration is a process that
and practicing new skills) any living organism undergoes to use the energy they get
from the sun.

Photosynthesis - From the Greek word photos which

means "light" and synthesis which means "putting
together"
- occurs in plants, some photosynthetic
bacteria, and algae
- It means " putting the light to put things
together." specifically carbohydrates or sugars

Photosynthesis takes place in...

Chloroplast - an organelle containing the pigment
chlorophyll that absorbs light
Photosynthesis involves sunlight, carbon dioxide and
water reacting with the light energy to produce sugar
and oxygen.

Photosynthesis Equation

Carbon
Dioxide water sugar oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy → C6H12O6+ 6O2

The two Stages of Photosynthesis

1. Light Dependent Reaction
- requires protons from light
- takes place in between thylakoids
- uses light and water to produce oxygen and 2
energy-carrying molecules
a. ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) - the energy
currency of the cell
b. NADPH (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide
phosphate hydrogen)
2. Light Independent Reaction/ Calvin Cycle
- does not require light
- takes place in the stroma
- uses carbon dioxide and NADPH to produce
carbohydrate or sugar

carbon
dioxide water sugar oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2

Cellular Respiration - is the process of breaking down

complex molecules such as sugar to release energy in the
form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
- it occurs in all living things.
Cellular Respiration takes place…
Mitochondria - the powerhouse of a cell
Cellular Respiration involves sugar and oxygen
reacting to produce carbon dioxide, water, and
energy in the form of ATP

Cellular Respiration Equation

sugar oxygen carbon

dioxide water
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O+ Energy ATP

Stages of Cellular Respiration

1. Glycolysis
2. Pyruvate Processing/ Oxidation
3. Krebs Cycle / Citric Acid Cycle
4. Electron Transport Chain

Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration

process, and differences of Photosynthesis and Cellular
Respiration. Each student will create a Photosynthesis
Model using random materials that they can see at their
home.

Direction: Create a Photosynthesis or Cellular Respiration
