Q1. Define random error. (1)

Q2. Give an example to show that the direction of velocity of a body can change even when its
acceleration is constant. (1)

Q3. Under what condition will the direction of sum and difference of two vectors be same? (1)

Q4 A large size brake on a bicycle is as effective as a small one. Justify (1)

Q5 Why does a cricket player lower his hands while catching a ball? (1)

Section B

Q6. A stone falls from a cliff and travels 24.5 m in the last second before it reaches the ground at
the foot of the cliff. Find the height of cliff. (2)

Q7. A hunter with a machine gun can fire 50g bullets with the velocity of 800 m/s. A 40 kg tiger
springs at him with the velocity of 10 m/s. How many bullets must he fire on to the tiger in
order to stop it in his track? (2)

Q8 Which of the following is more precise device for measuring length


a) a vernier calliper with 10 divisions on the sliding scale
b) a screw gauge of pitch 0.5 mm and 50 divisions on the circular scale (2)

Q9. To a person moving eastward with a velocity of 4.8 km/h ,rain appears to fall vertically
downward with a speed of 6.4 km/h . find the actual speed and direction of the rain. (2)

Q10 What do you understand by angle of repose. Derive its relation with coefficient of static
friction. (2)

Q11. A body of mass 5 kg is acted upon by three forces of magnitude 8 N and 6 N and 10N acting
along east, south and east-north respectively. Find the magnitude and direction of the
acceleration. (3)

Q12. State parallelogram law of vector addition and find magnitude and direction of the resutant
of two vectors P and Q inclined at an angle . (3)

Q13 Define centipetal acceleration. Derive an expression for centipetal acceleration of an object in
uniform circular motion in a plane. What will be direction of velocity and acceration at any
instant. (3)
Q14 Find a unit vector perpendicular to the both given vectors : (3)

Q15 Force-time graph for a body is as given . What is the velocity of the body at the end of 12sec?
Mass of body is 7 kg and assumes it to be initially at rest. (3)

Q16 Explain parallax method for measuring distance of a nearby star. Why parallax method cannot
be used for measuring distance of stars more than 100 light years away. (3)

Q17. An aircraft flying horizontally at an altitude of 2km with speed 200 m/s passes directly
overhead an anti-aircraft gun. At what angle from the horizontal should the gun be fired for
the shell with muzzle speed 600 m/ s to hit the plane? At what minimum altitude should the
pilot fly the plane to avoid being hit? (Take g = 10 m s–2). (3)

Q18 Two wooden blocks of masses 1 kg and 2 kg are separated by a certain distance. A bullet of
mass 50 g fired from a gun pierces through the block of mass 1 kg and then stopped in the
second block. After the impact of bullet, both blocks start moving with the same speed.
Calculate the percentage loss in the initial velocity of the bullet when it is between the two
blocks. (3)

Q19 Two towns A and B are connected by a regular bus service with a bus leaving in either
direction every T min. A man cycling with a speed of 20 Km/h in the direction of A to B notices
that a bus goes past him every 18 min in the direction of his motion ,and every 6min in the
opposite direction. What is the period T of the bus service and with what constant speed do
the buses ply on the road. (3)

Q20. State law of conservation of linear momentum and derive it from Newton’s third law of
motion. (3)

Q21. Give reasons for the following: (3)


(a) A load on a thief’s back does not apply any force on him when he jumps from the upper
story of a house.
(b) A gun recoils on being fired.
(c) A man falling from a height receives more injury when he falls on cemented floor rather
than when he falls on a heap of sand. (3)

Q22. A long playing record revolves with a speed of 33⅓ rev / min, and has a radius of 15 cm. Two
coins are placed at 4 cm and 14 cm away from the centre of the record. If the coefficient of
friction between the coins and the record is 0.15. Which of the two coins will revolve with the
record? (3)

Q23 One day a small piece of hair fall into the left eye of Kavita . It caused severe itching on her eye
and she was restless. On seeing this , her elder brother Sunil took her to eye specialist. The
doctor removed the hair from her eye. She felt a sigh of relief and expressed gratitude to both
the doctor and her elder brother. (4)
a) What were the values displayed by Sunil and Kavita?
b) A student measures the thickness of a human hair by looking through a microscope of
magnification 100. He makes 20 observations and finds the average width of the hair in
the field of view of microscope is 3.5 mm. What is the estimate on the thickness of hair?
Section E

Q24. a) What is a projectile? Derive the expressions for the time of flight, horizontal range and
maximum height for the projectile thrown upwards at an angle θ with the vertical direction.
b) The ceiling of a long hall is 25 m high. What is the maximum horizontal distance that a ball
thrown with a speed of 40 m /s can go without hitting the ceiling of the hall? (5)

Q25. (a) The displacement of a body is given to be proportional to the sqare of time elapsed. What
is the nature of the acceleration of the body? Justify your answer.
(b) A car accelerates from rest for some time at a constant rate α after which it decelerates at
constant rate of β. the total time elapsed is T second and maximum velocity attained is V.
(i) Draw a velocity time graph for the motion.
(ii) Calculate distance travelled in terms of α, β and V . (5)

Q26 (a) A lawn mower is pulled with some external force. Draw a free body diagram of the system
to show all the forces acting on it. Why is it easier to pull it rather than push it?
(b) Why vehicles are provided with round tyres only and not any other shape?
(c) Mention two instances when friction between two surfaces is deliberately increased.
Justify the action in each case. (5)

shell with muzzle speed 600 m/ s to hit the plane? At what minimum altitude should the pilot
fly the plane to avoid being hit? (Take g = 10 m s2 ). (3)

A in opposite directions with a speed of 54km/h each At a instant, when the distance AB is
equal to AC, both being 1km ,B decides to overtake A before C does. What minimum
acceleration of car B is required to avoid an accident . (3)

his clothing is 0.15. what is the minimum rotational speed of the cylinder to enable the man to
remain struck to the wall (without falling) when the floor is suddenly removed (3)

Q25 (a) A lawn roller is pulled with some external force. Draw a free body diagram of the system to
show all the forces acting on it. Why is it easier to pull it rather than push it?
(b) A body of mass 10kg is placed on an inclined surface of angle 30 0. If the coefficient of
limiting friction is 1/3, find the force required to just push the body up the inclined surface.
The force is being parallel to the inclined surface.

Q26 (a) From the top of a building a ball is dropped while another is projected horizontally at the
same time. (i) Which ball will strike the ground first? (ii) Which will strike the ground with
more speed? Justify your answer in each case.
(b) A body is projected with speed u at an angle to the horizontal to have maximum range.
What is the velocity at the highest point?
(c) What is the angle of projection of a projectile motion whose range R is n times the
maximum height. (5)
