Project Title Final Major Project: buckets

Section 1: Review
I came onto this course because I had a real passion for the theatre; I was interested in both acting and
backstage disciplines and this course that covered both were ideal. As well as wanting to gain an
understanding of the professional workings of theatre, I also wanted opportunities to work with people,
like me, who also wanted to work in this industry. Throughout the course, I have worked on Devising,
ensemble work, movement, vision designs and much more helping me develop a multitude of skills. A
highlight for me was creating and designing my vision pitch as I explored different mediums for
presenting my ideas which semi-brought them to life. I also thoroughly enjoyed working on duologues as
my scene partner I had chosen Shakespeare (another love of mine.) For my FMP I am specializing in
Acting as I think it can be very beneficial to have a background in acting before pursuing any other
theatre paths as it will allow me to gain the best understanding I can for acting for theatre if I were to
specialize in stage management (Something I’m quite interested in) In the future I’m unsure of what I’d
like to pursue as I’m quite interested in stage management but don’t want to fully let go of performing.
The prospect of pantomime or becoming a theme park performer is something that interests me at the
moment- something with lots of exaggerated energy. As for my immediate aspirations, I want to spend
some time working on myself as a performer, especially focusing on singing, dancing and script work in
hopes of making improvements in these areas. During buckets, I’m working on stepping out of my
comfort zone and working on theatre styles that are a little different to what I’m used to.

Section 2: Project Concept


The concept of our project is to perform and develop an ensemble piece of theatre called buckets,
written by Adam Barnard; in which we will explore the themes of love, death and overall, the concept of
time. The style of writing of buckets leaves much of the context up to us to create; we have a lot of
creative freedom to explore the sub-themes we find interesting. What’s fascinating about the play is that
there are no characters, plot, settings or stage directions, which gives us as performers a lot of creative
liberty in how we make a story. It’s difficult to land on a single concept for buckets because the
possibilities with it are endless. To develop my understanding of the play, I plan to research absurdism
as the style of theatre reflects the writing of buckets- the mismatched characters, lack of plot and
endless possibilities. I aim to spend time creating a well-developed character throughout the process.
Because characters aren’t written in, if we want to make recurring faces then the characterization needs
to be strong. As well as this, it's also important that ensemble work is prioritised as many of our scenes
will be working as an ensemble to create environments and atmospheres. This process is highly
collaborative- working off feedback is crucial. I will work hard to put forth ideas and support my peers in
this creation process, as I hope they will support and educate me with their ideas and what they have
learnt. The concept of having no assigned lines and having to create characters from scratch is quite
daunting but I know with the help of my fellow castmates and independent studying, we’ll be able to
navigate and fully develop this play into something amazing.

Section 3: Evaluation
To complete a thorough analysis of my work each week, I will be creating a weekly video diary
discussing the successes and challenges of the project as well as evaluating what needs to be done to
make progress through the weeks, reflecting on feedback given by peers and practitioners to evaluate
my execution as a performer and active theatre maker. I will also be completing a detailed action plan
delineating what I have completed and achieved that week in both my group sessions and individual
study to ensure my individual work is in accord with my collaborative endeavours. Collaborative working
is a major part of this project, so communication must be at the forefront of our working processes.
Criticism can lead to the demotivation and discouragement of putting forth new ideas. However, to grow
and adapt, choices should be challenged rather than critiqued. The concept of challenging a person can
instead add motivation and encouragement as their ideas are given the space to exist and develop,
consequentially leading to a strong cast of theatre makers who are willing to be challenged and adapt to
changes. Teamwork is essential for a play like buckets. There is so much creative freedom so
navigating the script alone is extremely challenging. Throughout the process, we will often share our
ideas and thoughts which can lead to group inspiration. It’s these moments of group sharing which will
be the best opportunities to take notes to evaluate and asses during independent study periods to bring
the best work forth into the rehearsal room.

1 Monday- Today we read through the script for the first time, My script

our initial thoughts.

down any ideas I have for characters, setting etc.
2 27/02/2023   Monday- We began by doing a warmup game of splattegories. My Script

We then started working on Scene 1. Doctor. We first read My laptop
through the scene as a whole group before discussing what
emotions it portrayed and ways we could stage it- We
considered how we could use volume to shift the characters'
perspective. Following that, we split into smaller groups and
used our ideas and judgements to stage a portion of the scene
and perform it to the class so we could magpie ideas and
concepts that we enjoyed to use in buckets. We then picked our
two favourite ideas and transferred these to a larger scale by
splitting the cast into two big groups to start exploring our
favourite concepts as an ensemble.

Friday- In our theory session today, we were given our research


questions for our PowerPoint presentations next week, so I
started doing some research for that mainly focusing on what
points I wanted to cover because my question was so broad. I
also spent some time organizing my website to start putting my
work on there.

Independent- I planned and recorded my week 1 reflection


video and uploaded that to YouTube and the website. Alongside
this, I’ve reread the script and explored a little when the play was
written and who Adam Barnard was. For next week, I need to
create my research presentation, handout and accompanying
notes ready to present to the class on 10/03/23

3 06/03/2023   Monday- The main focus of today was physical theatre as an Notebook
ensemble. We again began with a warmup game of splattegories Script in folder
to increase our receptiveness and then moved into a walking My presentation/
around the room activity. we walked around the room changing handouts

paces on a scale from 1 to 10. We then split into two groups and

watched the other half do the exercise. While watching we were
encouraged to think about potential stories and ideas that came
to mind and how we could use this in the scenes. We then spent
a little time creating objects with our bodies before moving these
into slightly bigger groups, creating an object and then telling a
story with it. We spent a portion of the day working on partnering
activities. We did a partnering activity where we had to follow our
partners’ palm as they moved it around the space. This was
beneficial in helping us get more comfortable with moving in
strange ways without fear of judgement. We then formed groups
of threes and labelled ourselves A, B and C. A would stand in
the middle while B and C took turns moving a body part of A’s.
We also explored this exercise by having our eyes closed and
also constantly keeping our limbs moving once they were
pushed in a direction. This exercise required a lot of trust within
the small groups which luckily, I feel like I had. In the afternoon
we worked on lifts and how we would conduct them safely. For
our end-of-session sharing task, we were split into small groups
and had to create a short scene using the techniques covered
today to fit the brief. Our brief was: “A group of journalists
arguing over Tomorrow's news” We created these short scenes
and then shared them to share the different ways we all
incorporated the exercises into a scene.

Friday- I shared my research presentation with the rest of the


cast. I created a PowerPoint about Absurdism and what it is.
This sharing allowed me to learn about a plethora of new
concepts that can be related to buckets and applied in any
further research I do.

Independent- During the week I completed my research


presentation, so I was ready to share it with the class as well as
creating a handout to post on our teams channel. I have also
filmed my week 2 weekly reflection where I looked back and
evaluated the successes and challenges of last week. Moving
on, I need to conduct an interview and analysis with someone of
a different generation and ask them questions I’ve generated
relating to the themes of buckets.

4 13/03/2023   Monday - This week our session was focused on props and Script in
costumes and how we would look at developing a story and folder
characters when given props and costumes. The session started Post-it-notes
with a warm-up game of splattegories and then we moved into Notebook
an improvisation exercise where we worked an improvised

scene around a random prop to start thinking creatively about
how we can use pops in situations they are not designed for.

After this, we built upon our scenes from last week, this time phone
using props, we had a missing group member so we replaced
their character with a teddy bear which was quite funny. In the
afternoon, in small groups, we used clothes to create characters
by humanly moving them. This allowed us to develop our
communication as a group as we all had to be moving in the
same way for our character to look realistic. For our end-of-
session sharing task, we got into two large groups and staged
our versions of scene 3. Pet project. In my group, we used
ensemble movement to develop the framework for the scene
which was very beneficial. 

Wednesday- On this day we watched ‘The Ocean at the End of


The Lane’ which I found very inspiring. It got me thinking as to
how we could use optical illusions and stage magic to add depth
and excitement to our performance.

Friday- We watched the remaining research presentation which


helped me gain valuable insight into topics such as clickbait, AI
developments, media control, and the exploration of the meaning
of life on stage. All of this will help me with my personal scene
exploration as well as help us as a cast to stage our scenes.

Independent- So far I have filmed my weekly reflection 3. Due


to family illness, I have not yet completed my interview but aim to
get that filmed and analyzed in the next week. Moving on, I want
to continue with the annotations of my script so that when we
start compiling all our ideas together I have meaningful
suggestions to input. Before the end of next week, I will also
have written a creative writing prologue to demonstrate my
knowledge and understanding of Adam Barnard’s writing style as
well as make it coherent with the themes of buckets.

5 20/03/2023 Monday- we played a warmup game of splattegories before Notebook


reading scene 30. Terms and conditions. This is the scene we Script
worked on for the day. We discussed in small groups ideas, Tripod and
imagery, and character ideas we had for this scene and then phone
brought these back into the room while we made notes and
bounced off people’s ideas. Then separated from scene 30, We
created a standalone scene depicting the use of AI in a domestic
setting. We then worked in small groups to begin staging a
section of Terms & Conditions to be shared with the group as an
end-of-session sharing task. Our group explored using different
materials to bring the scene to life which resulted in a piece we
were proud to share.

Friday- I used Friday as an opportunity to learn Harvard


referencing and start referencing my absurdism research task.
As well as this I added some of my work so far onto my website.
Independent- This week I filmed weekly reflection 4 as well as
my interview which I also wrote out a transcript and analysis. I
have also completed my creative writing task but am hoping next
week to find some people to help me record the scene, so I also
have a visual representation of my creative writing. Next week I
aim to start working on my playlist, hopefully picking a song for
every scene and then analyzing twelve of them to gain a better
understanding of the emotional narratives of each section.
6 27/03/2023 Monday- We had a brief morning check-in and then got into our Script in
groups for scenes 1-10. When with our scene partners, we folder
assigned lines and discussed who the characters were and Notebook
where it was being set. We then feedbacked this to the whole Post-it-notes
group; we repeated the process for scenes 10-24. When
discussing our ideas as a whole group it was beneficial to have Highlighters
others offering their ideas off of the back of yours which built
onto the concepts we’d created. At the end of the day, we did a
readthrough with the assigned dialogue and Scott marked down
notes and any changes that he was going to tell us the following
day

Tuesday- With Scott, we continued the work we started on


Monday by finishing scenes 24-33. This time we all had to create
character names for each scene, even though they aren’t
mentioned in the play, it will help with character analysis and the
creation of a master copy of the script. We then repeated the
process once more for scenes 24-33 and told Scott our
character names. With our movement director Deeps in the
afternoon, we started looking at how we can stage Scenes 1 and
10 together through ensemble movement.

Independent- Over the easter holidays I am going to finish my


playlist as well as create three context posters for the years
2014-2023. This is the opportunity I have to learn lines and
complete all outstanding work, so I am ready to jump straight
into intensive rehearsals. I want to complete a bit of character
analysis and see if there are any details I can draw about my
character from the limited information given. However, won’t
complete a full character analysis in full until we’ve established
the environments and intentions of my character during intensive
rehearsals.

7 17/04/2023 Monday- We started the day by having our websites check to Script
ensure we were all on the right track. We then looked through Post-it-notes
our designer’s vision for the play, going through the model box, Pencil
inspirations, and costume ideas. To start the main rehearsal, we Updated
began going through the play slowly scene by scene covering website
scenes 1-4 to establish what the story of our scene is and how is
the best way to play it. The process involved us performing the
scene, being given notes, and then adapting to the guidance.

Tuesday- We had a morning with Deeps where we worked on


scene 11. Stan, going through the choreography that we created
before half term. We then had a brief break while others were
working on scenes so Kayleigh and I ran through lines and
discussed the prospect of creating a rehearsal diary

Wednesday- We choreographed the riot scene with Deeps,


working on character motive and moving in slo-motion. In the
afternoon we worked with another director, Lex who was
covering for Scott and we worked on two additional ensemble
scenes: Scene 6 and 14.

Thursday- We continued going through scenes and any that I


weren’t in I used as an opportunity to catch other people up on
the work, run lines and start my character analysis. I worked with
Deeps to explore how we can cerate the characters of mice in
our movements and mannerisms. After blocking all the scenes,
we then did a stagger through of everything we’ve done so far

Friday- We started with a tutorial session with Deb to ensure we


were certain of our next steps. When back in the theatre Scott
worked with us on some scenes that needed going over and any
ensemble pieces.

8 24/04/2023 Monday- We started by having a meditation and warmup session Script


with Deeps- including flocking to practice using each other for Post-it-notes
visual cues. Our SM Katie introduced us to some of the props Coloured pens
and then we did a full run through of the show, starting to
incorporate some props.
We then started refining scenes 1-10 having a big push on
volume as most of us were too quiet.
In scene 2. Forward planning we started looking at how we could
incorporate playing with children’s toys into our physicality of
playing toddlers.

Tuesday- Chloe and Molly started blocking scene 28. On the


phone, looking at the fight choreo as well as exploring the
importance of setting the geography of the space so the
audience can better visualise the character’s world.
We also blocked my scene- Days. I pitched V’s idea to Scott
which includes breaking the fourth wall and using the lines to
communicate with the stage management team in the box as
myself.
After the final two scenes were blocked we continued refining
scenes 11-20, solidifying blocking, working on projection and
establishing quick transitions between scenes.
We also had to cut two scenes: terms and conditions and
teacher 2 because our runtime yesterday was 1h45m when the
aim is 1h.

Wednesday- Today we had our costume fitting which was fun.


We then went through scenes 21-33 tightening up transitions
and seeing how we can speed up scenes to try and cut down our
overall runtime.

Thursday- I arrived early with the monologue crew so I could use


the time to be present in the rehearsal room and update my
action plan and character analysis. When the rest of the cast
arrived, we went through scene 1-11 with the sound effects
amazingly arranged by Joseff Harris, timing our movements and
transitions to the sound. We spent the afternoon going through
these scenes again with a real push on volume.

Friday- We had a check-in with deb in the morning and then


went through scenes 12-33 with sound effects before doing a
complete full run through with sound and an audience of our
creative team. We then did a stagger-through in the afternoon
building on the notes from the morning run.
9 01/04/2023 Tuesday- We spent the morning going through ensemble scenes Makeup
with Deeps. This included: Stan where we had to adapt to piece Hairband/
to accommodate for the wing space, Being there and Doctor. spray
Lydia and I then worked with Deeps on our toddler physicality to Script w
ensure a more accurate performance. notes
Wednesday- Our first day of tech! We started teching the show
all the day up to scene 28. With costume, lighting sound and
props

Thursday- We finished teching the rest of the show in the egg


We then moved to the Ustinov in the afternoon to plan and
perfect each scene transition to make them as seamless as
possible.

Friday- We briefly went through scenes 11 and 33 with Deeps as


we just needed to brush up on the group movements.
We then went over the transitions we’d rehearsed yesterday in
the Egg to ensure they’d work and we had clean transitions
In the afternoon we did our first ever dress run with a
photographer before watching the dress run of Variations
In the evening it was our first performance

Saturday- We went through the transition for scene 16 because


yesterday there was a lot of stage traffic trying to get everyone
off and props on.
Then we performed our closing night show!
