Abstract

Hydrates are white, solid, ice-like substances that form at elevated pressures and low temperatures
because of an interaction between a liquid water phase and light natural gas components. This small
molecule also occurs in solid form, within a structure that looks just like ice, these ice-like
compounds comprise natural gas and water and are named “Natural Gas Hydrates”. Natural Gas
hydrates are solid crystalline compounds that are formed by the chemical combination of natural gas
and water high under pressure and at low temperatures above the freezing point of water.
The extraction method has its technical advantages and disadvantages but the environmental and
economic impacts are largely unknown.
There are currently three main extraction methods for gas hydrate that may be applied
independently or in combination: 1) pressure reduction, 2) heating, and 3) injection of carbon
dioxide.
Gas hydrates are considered a nuisance when they occur in oil/gas flowlines, they are considered a
potential asset when present in large natural deposits in arctic regions under the permafrost and
oceanic sediments along the continental margins. Other technological applications of gas hydrates
include the storage of natural gas and hydrogen. The ability to store natural gas in the form of gas
hydrate pellets is appealing. particularly for stranded gas applications where the produced gas is too
small to justify building a liquefied natural gas plant and production is too far away from a pipeline.
Gas hydrates can also be applied to separation processes including the separation of flue gases and
desalination of seawater. In the former application, flue gases including carbon dioxide are
selectively captured in gas hydrates while excluding (totally, or partially in most cases) nitrogen and
other benign molecules. Natural gas can be effectively and efficiently stored as a gas hydrate. This
can be achieved through proper study and understanding of the processes involved to convert the
gas to hydrate and the processes required to prevent the hydrate from dissociating. The storage of
natural gas as hydrates will require the synthesis of the hydrate and its regasification.
