CHAPTER 2
LINEAR EQUATIONS IN ONE VARIABLE
Concept to Master Solving Linear Equations:
You can also remember Rule 1 if we take anything from one side to
other (i.e. form LHS to RHS or vice versa) the sign will get reversed.
Let's do a few examples to clarify this:
Ques 1. Find x:
(a) x – 1 = 2
Let’s Solve:
x–1=2

equality, it still holds, and same holds for the division.
How to use?
Find x: 2x = 4
1 1
⇒ × 2x=4 × [Multiplying 1 on both sides]
2 2
⇒ x = 2 is the solution
Let’s Check:
LHS: 2 × 2 = 4 [when x = 2]
RHS: 2
⇒ x = 2 is the correct solution.
Concept to master solving linear equations:
(b) 2x + 4 = 8

After six years the sum of their ages will be 64 years. Find their
present ages.
Solution:
⇒Let' s say present age of sita is x
⇒Present age of father=3x
⇒Sita age after 6 years=x+6
⇒Father age after 6 years=3x+6
⇒x+6+3x+6 =64 [ sum of their ages after 6 years given]

Solution:
3x 2x+5 5
We have - =
4 3 2
LCM of 2 ,3 and 4=12
3x 2x+5 5
∴ ×12- ×12= ×12 (Multiplying both sides by 12)
4 3 2
3x×3 -(2x+5)×4=5×6
9x -8x - 20 = 30 (Solving the bracket)
x-20=30
x = 30+20 (Transposing 20 to RHS)
x=50
Hence x = 50 is the required solution

Question 8:
The angles of a triangle are in the ratio 2 : 3 :4. Find the angles of the
triangle.
Solution: Let the angles of a given triangle be 2x°, 3x° and 4x°.
2x+3x+4x =180° (∵ Sum of the angles of a triangle is 180°)
9x = 180°
x= 20° (Transposing 9 to RHS)
Angles of the given triangles are
2 x 20 = 40°
3x20=60°
4 x 20= 80°
Question 9:
2x - 11 = 5
2x = 5+ 11 (Transposing 11 to RHS)
2x=16
x = 8
Hence the required numbers are 8 and 11 - 8 = 3.
