2.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

As a student at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, we need to complete our New
Product Development (NPD) assignment to fulfill the ENT600 course. Product development
typically refers to all stages involved in bringing a product from concept or idea through market
release and beyond. In other words, product development incorporates a product's entire
journey. Our target market is mainly the hiking community because nowadays people love to
hike. In our project, we introduce a new product with technological elements in terms of hiking.
This report is to provide information and explain the product in more detail. Hiking, as we all
know, is an activity that entails walking for long distances, usually on trail paths. Hiking is
another physically demanding sport. After we studied the market survey and existing market
demand to increase demand, our group developed a new water bottle invention that we called
the "The Alkaline Magic Bottle." The Alkaline Magic Bottle is the name of our product. Hikers
and athletes may enjoy the bottles and continue to use them with this new technology. The
reason why we use The Alkaline Magic Bottle is that most hikers face dehydration during hiking.
As we know hiking is a sport that requires a lot of energy . Dehydration can occur when
individuals do not drink enough fluid or lose more than you take in.

3.0 INTRODUCTION

New product development (NPD) is the process of bringing new products to market that
involves the work of inventing something new or innovating an existing product. We need to
understand what the demand wants and adjust toward products that are reasonable, and lastly,
we must produce our new product. In this project, students are required to introduce their new
product with new technological elements in terms of hiking. As we know, hiking is getting
popular among the masses lately. Hiking is an activity of moderate difficulty that involves
walking across long distances, generally on trails and paths. The duration of the activity varies
between short, half-day programmes and longer itineraries of over 20 days.

Problem Statement / Issues


Hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the world. Hiking has been one of the
fastest-growing outdoor activities in the United States since the 1940s, with an estimated 30
million hikers participating. The issue is the majority of hikers did not bring enough water
because they think it was heavy and surely will add weight to their packs. However, some
hikers bring a water bottle, which runs out halfway up the climb. When it comes to water
resources, for example, lakes and rivers, most of them are not confident or certain about the
water's cleanliness.

Methodology
First of all, my group did observations before we started our new product development. As we
are all sport management students and we are involved in outdoor recreation activities, we
know that not having enough water is the main issue or problem for this project. Most hikers
prefer not to bring a lot of stuff when hiking. After we did observation, my group did an online
survey or questionnaires where we wanted to know the number of respondents that faced the
same problem, which was dehydration when doing the hiking activities. Based on our findings,
we have identified a contemporary issue faced by hikers. On this issue, The Alkaline Magic
Bottle is the innovation that can be a solution.

Limitation
There is no limit to using the bottle. Everyone can use the bottle because the function of the
bottle is good for our health. Our prices are the most competitive and affordable for the product
specification, technology and water quality it produces. The risk of contracting any disease while
hiking or using it on a daily basis is low.

4.0 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

4.1 Definition

The process of introducing new goods or concepts to the market and satisfying consumer
demand is known as new product development (NPD). Idealization, New-to-the-market product
innovation, Advertising, Production and marketing, and Brand Market value protection are
typically included in NPD stages. Additionally, it faces market flaws and catches innovative
chances. The goal of NPD is to develop a new product that will meet consumer wants more
effectively than current ones and, as a result, boost profitability.

Companies focused on their ability to create new goods to expand and protect their market
share. The launch of new items that offer better customer value than existing ones benefits
businesses as well as buyers. Products are released for a number of purposes, such as
Companies must comprehend customers' requirements in order to produce new products, and
this frequently entails conducting marketing strategy to ascertain consumers' wants.

The goal of product development is to support, maintain, and enhance the company's ability to
meet customer demand in the marketplace. The targeted audience for a product must be
identified from the start of the product development process because we must recognize the
reality that not every product created will appeal to and fulfill every purchaser in the
marketplace. Quantitative market research should be carried out at every stage of the design
process, including before the idea for a new product or service is created, during the product's
development, and after it is released. However, the provider and manufacturer of other process
steps are distinct from the product when our idea or production is a tangible good.

Thorough knowledge of the demands and desires of market consumers is necessary for the
development of new products, as is market competition. Additionally, the market itself must be of
a favorable character. Other important aspects that can influence matching client expectations
include things like price, lead time, and product quality. In order to better meet customer
requirements, businesses must be innovative in their practices and strategies. Besides
concentrating on the market and growing their own market position through the development of
new products on a regular basis or more conveniently in steps and methodically, businesses
can better the requirements of the customers. Companies must deal with a variety of risks and
difficulties during the project.

4.2 Classification of NPD

A brand-new product in the marketplace denotes that the concept behind its creation was
attractive and that it has not yet reached the main or worldwide economy level. The new item
we're aiming to develop is the outcome of combining the thoughts of our team members and
soliciting feedback from a number of people who enjoy hiking hobbies.Our objective is to
expand each product's efficiency and utilization potential. However, in order to finish this
product, our crew is searching for innovative solutions. We have decided to make performance
improvements or modifications to our products, we have added a number of additional features
to the device, including a LED pH for green light neutral is good, alloy electrode & temperature
sensor, stainless steel long-lasting and anti-fragile, solar to support pH function, and a bottle
filter to prevent dirt from entering the bottle, power button for easy to open and off when not use,
and have bottle holder it is for easy carry and can hanging at hiking bag.

4.3 New Product Development Process

An essential component of product development is new product development (NPD). When


creating a new product or service, it will be launched onto the marketplace from ideation. It also
entails modernizing current products and bringing outmoded goods to fresh markets. A new
product often goes through several stages of this process, starting with the conception of the
innovative process and ending with the public release of the product. Research and
development (R&D), product design, concept testing, and prototype build are the four processes
that have been highlighted. Following these steps will help to restrict risks and reduce
failure-causing resources, which will result in superior new product alternatives.

4.3.1 Research & Development

The Research and Development (R&D) process requires the understanding of potential
products on the market and analyzing the weaknesses of existing products. These weaknesses
will be improved with the introduction of new products. This new product also has very high
performance. This may be due to limited historical or preliminary data, so R&D is a key step in
new product development in which it is an organized effort to discover new knowledge,
products, or processes.

Usually, innovation is about researching and developing new products. The conduction of
product development research will help in obtaining information that will assist the company
respond to market changes more effectively, and try to understand customer attitudes toward
new technologies that have been introduced.

4.3.1.1 Idea Generation

The idea was developed from one of our group's members sharing his friend's hiking
adventure. According to the narrative, one of the major issues with hiking is a lack of water.
Finding clean, drinkable water sources while hiking is challenging. In addition, if the hikers do
not beware of the surroundings and take care of themselves at the places, they may have a
high risk of getting various diseases such as allergies, leptospirosis, diarrhea and even
stomach ache. The second issue that hikers likely face is the burdensome nature of carrying
clean water supplies while out on the trail. Sometimes, excessive load can be dangerous
especially when hikers climb steep and slippery terrains.

So, we took an initiative to discuss the solution for these problems. We come out with an idea
to produce a ‘magic bottle’ that can provide clean water supply for people that love outdoor
activities especially hiking

4.3.1.2 Idea Screening

For the idea screening, our group members were interested in discussing the product design
and features. In the beginning of the discussion in the classes and through Goggle Meet apps,
group members were actively brainstorming and giving their ideas regarding the features that
can be put or combined with the ‘ Magic Bottle’. The discussion includes the design, benefits
and features for the water bottle. At the end of the discussion, we choose the suitable features
that can be combined with the water bottle that can provide a clean water supply. And then,
we do the voting system based on our perception of the relevancy of the product towards the
target market. The group finalized the idea with few innovations added on

4.3.1.3 Market Survey

In order to test the marketability of our new product development, the alkali water magic bottle,
a questionnaire with 10 questions with different categories was created. The questionnaire
was distributed via Google forms. There were 107 responses, both female and male,
successfully completing this survey. This questionnaire was answered by your 55.1% (59
Female) respondent and 44.9% (48 Male) respondent. Majority of the respondents were
identified between 21 to 25 year old

According to the survey, most of the respondents had some problems when doing hiking
activities. About 107 responses agreed that getting a source of clean water is quite difficult
while hiking. We know that dehydration is the number one cause of hiking problems. Hence, a
new product called The Alkali Magic bottle can solve respondents’ problems and meet their
demand. From the survey, around 50.5% of respondent show their interest and support
towards this product

Based on the figure 3 above, around 20 respondents give their opinion that we need to focus
more on our design. This is because the water bottle looks a bit bulky and not exclusive. From
the survey also, the respondents give a rate of the quality of our product. Overall, most of the
respondents understand and are interested in our new product development.

The pie chart above shows the price of the The Alkali Magic Bottle that respondents would likely
spend. About 59.4% of those surveyed expected and were willing to spend RM100 on a The
Alkali Magic Bottle. In addition, 26.4% of those surveyed were willing to buy for the price of
RM120 . Otherwise, 11.3% of those surveyed would like to spend around RM140 on a The
Alkali Magic Bottle

4.3.1.4 Current Market Need

In order to get information about the current market needs of the consumer for our product,
we carried out an online survey in which we found 84.1% respondent think that obtaining
clean water is quite difficult while hiking. Meanwhile, 3.5% of the respondents disagree with
the statement that it is difficult to get clean water while hiking. This result proves that most of
the respondents are actively involved in outdoor activities especially hiking.

By introducing our product to the consumer, especially a very active person involved in
outdoor activities like hiking, it can help them get clean water without having to think about
the water content. Besides that, it also can decrease the percentage of people who find it
difficult to get clean water while hiking. According to the survey, 79.1% were interested in
buying our product, 12.8% might consider our product while 1.7% refused to use our product.
In conclusion, our product have a lot of potential to grow in the current market because of the
uniqueness and give lots of benefits to the consume

4.3.2 Product Design & Features

4.3.2.1 Product Design

We specially designed this Alkaline Magic bottle with some new technology that has
never been found on the market. The most unique thing about this bottle is the
technology that uses pH level testing that will work to identify whether the water is clean
or not. The product design below will show more details about the bottle we have done.

The Alkaline Magic Bottles come with a safety and premium box that can attract people
to buy. The box consists of Alkaline Bottle cover such as suitable cover for going hiking
and adventure activities. There is an Alkaline bottle’s instructions paper included in the
box. The Alkaline Magic Bottle costs RM99.99 since it has convenient and unique
characteristics

4.3.2.2 Product Features

1) LED pH Number
The product has a pH level. The pH level of a solution is determined by the amount of
hydrogen ions present. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. If below 7, it is acidic, but if above 7,
it is basic. The LED pH number determines the color and function of the Alkaline Magic Bottle.
If the LED turns green, that means the water is clean and good to drink. Next, you can still
drink it if the bottle turns orange, but it is not as neutral as green. Lastly, if the LED turns red, it
is dangerous to drink and not good for our body and health.

2) Water Filtration
The Alkaline Magic Bottle has a limitation. Which is alkaline alone is insufficient because it
does not filter out other sediments in drinking water. Our bottled water has a water filter that
removes unwanted impurities from water such as sand, rock, heavy metals, and bacteria.

3) Alloy Electrode & Temperature Sensor


Combination electrodes have the glass Hydrogen Ion (H+) sensitive electrode and an
additional reference electrode all in one housing. Sensors monitor the level of pH by measuring
the activity of the hydrogen ions. The activity is compared to pure water, a neutral solution,
using the pH scale of 0 to 14 to determine the acidity or alkalinity.

4) Stainless Steel
One of the most significant benefits of stainless steel is its durability. The Alkaline Magic Bottle
is made from this material and is lightweight; it would not damage or puncture when put under
pressure or dropped on the ground.

5) Power Button
The Alkaline Magic Bottle has power button mode. Which is easy to open and off when we use
it. A button power switch controls the flow of power to a solar. It saves power across multiple
voltage rails and protects subsystems from damage. This will also save usage of the solar
because we only use it for a moment to measure the alkaline after which we can close the
button and enjoy the drink that has been tested.

4.3.3 Concept Testing

Concept testing is a research technique that entails questioning consumers about concepts
and ideas for goods or services prior to the actual launch. Therefore, we can get important
information from the concept test before the product launch, such as customer acceptance and
willingness to purchase. We can't always assume that every new feature or concept for a
product we introduce will be a hit. This is so that the success or failure of a concept can only be
determined by the customer. Concept testing insights will aid in a successful and efficient
product launch.

Concept testing allows us to obtain a thorough understanding of many facets of our own ideas.
We perform surveys for our products to evaluate their accessibility, acceptance, marketability,
and product quality. This survey will assist us in determining whether or not our new products
are accepted by the market. We also supply and incorporate pictures of our product designs and
features into this inquiry. To stimulate respondents' interest in and desire to respond to a visual
concept, a picture is worth a thousand words. Potential customers and potential buyers of our
products will be aware of the Alkaline Magic bottles' function and distinctiveness, which will be
based on a questionnaire.

To ensure that responders fit within our target demographic, we also included demographic
questions in this questionnaire. We discovered from this survey of our concept design that the
respondents might not be among our client base and are not interested in our product prior to its
release. Additionally, this survey might reveal the features.We can also get an idea of what the
future users we want and the pain our customers are facing with existing features through their
comments by providing our products development on bottled water with the use of a pH Meter
and a filtered system to obtain quality clean water during the hardships and challenges of
climbing in this review, and it helped us a lot before we launched the product. This questionnaire
aid in the implementation of a new pricing structure and the planning of discount offers for new
products. It is crucial for us to gauge our consumers' initial reactions and find the features and
benefits that would thrill them.

4.3.4 Build Model/Prototype (2D or 3D)

A two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional model of the Alkali magic bottle


for use in product and design diagrams. This bottle is just right for active hikers and individuals
who frequently go through the forest because it can be difficult to locate clean water when they
climb. As you can see, we provide four attractive colors, and the four colors contain matte
material, which makes this paint resistant, strong, and attractive to users who use it. Figure 11

This bottle is actually very useful for hikers and people who love to go to nature. This bottle is so
easy to use and friendly. The bottle is also antifragile and can even be long-lasting. This feature
is good because we do not need to worry about finding clean water in the jungle and forest. We
can just refill the container with water and press the power button, and suddenly the LED can
start to function by showing the pH level of that water

4.3.5 Test Marketing

The last phase of the commercialization of a previously developed new product is test
marketing. The process of creating new items, as well as those products' suggested marketing
strategies, are put to the test in this stage under actual market conditions. Before incurring
significant and costly costs, test marketing allows marketers to gain experience with product
marketing. Market testing is typically done to assess a market's potential success in terms of the
performance of a new product, its acceptability, perceived value, and the effectiveness of a
marketing campaign.

We will develop a website landing page with the introduction of the value proposition and a
registration form for our product in order to conduct our test marketing on it. We can conduct a
survey to determine how many and how many customers are interested in our product by using
the registration email that our components have from the website page web design. We can
also obtain a survey to further explore how it can be improved in response to customer interest
and feedback.Then, in order to see if people are interested in this product or not, we will also
run Google advertisements to promote it to the general public. This is due to the fact that
advertising may assist ensure that our messages are understood by the people who make up
our target market, which will raise the perceived value of our products, spark interest in them,
and result in sales.

The product will then be introduced to the public in the shopping mall, where we will set up a
booth where they can test it out and see for themselves how innovative it is. A new venture
analysis competition, which will give us information from user feedback about our products,
pricing, and communication plans, will also be held at the event where this product will also be
unveiled. This competition will help us improve our marketing productivity and prevent disaster
before we launch the product on a large scale. We may measure the level of customer
awareness, product trials, repeat purchases, and prospective sales volume made from the go or
no-go choice of our product to launch it in a large way by setting up stalls in malls and taking
part in new business events.

5.0 CONCLUSION

In summary, water is a source of life without it, the human species would have no life. Not only
the human species but also all the animals of the earth. Drinking water is very important to our
bodies. The human body needs water for day-to-day survival. Humans may be able to survive
without any food for a whole week, but without water, they cannot survive even for three days.
The importance of drinking water for our bodies is 70%, so it can help our bodies function
normally. The Alkaline Magic Bottle has the potential to be developed into an innovative product.
This innovative bottle can be used not only by hikers, but it is suitable for all individuals due to
its multi-function, high-tech characteristics, and uniqueness. All the features we create can
make our bottle more special from other competitors. Our bottle can beat the commercial as the
technology we create at bottle wins in the eyes of the people around the world. There is no
other competitor that uses the features of the bottle like we create our product which is The
Alkaline Magic Bottle. The features that we use are really helpful especially for those who like to
hike.
