Kinesiology

Life is movement. Starting from the smallest living cells to the most dynamic athletic skill, all
aspects of the human body are in a constant state of movement. Kinesiology is the study of
human movement and the relationships between physical activity and health. In addition to
studying the nuts and bolts of movement itself, also examines how body systems interact
during various forms of training and how to use that knowledge to enhance performance,
avoid or overcome injury, and promote physical fitness in individuals and whole populations.
It applies the principles of physiology, Biomechanics, anatomy, psychology and sociology
and it is based specifically on musculoskeletal anatomy, neuromuscular physiology and
biomechanics.

Kinesiology as it is known in physical education is the science of human motion but is not a
science of its own. It comprises of many sciences contains wide information and offer
opportunity for the application of scientific principles in teaching and coaching procedures.
The word 'Kinesiology' is rarely used in Physical Education terminology in our country.
During the previous years, Kinesiology was not considered such an important subject to be
included in physical education colleges in India, for example; and thus at present the
students and physical educationists find the word 'Kinesiology' quite new and unfamiliar. It
will be interesting to note that all those countries that are well advanced in the field of sports
and games have progressed through Kinesiology. It is considered as a fundamental part
(foundation stone) of physical education and coaching and coaching of skills and techniques.
Now Kinesiology is a very commonly used word in the field of physical education and sports.
The meaning of this word is "Science of Movement."

From the meaning of the word itself we mean study of any movement. This is again related
to all the movements with respect to human body and its parts, organs or systems,
movement of the external objects, movements related to energy systems in the body and the
universe, movements related to impulses, movements related to the flow of reflexes within
the body and so on.

Historical Background of Kinesiology

The science of kinesiology is the blend of the principles and proven facts of mechanics,
which is a specitic branch o physics, and also principles related to anatomy and physiology.
Any scientific law and principle which governs human movements and also movement of any
object which is related to the human performance comes under the laws and principles of
kinesiology.
There are many philosophers and scientists who have contributed towards the field of
movement science. Their inventions, discoveries and the conceptual ideas helps in
analyzing any human movement and in turn helps in the development of human
performance. Their contributions may not be directly related to the human performance, but
applications of those laws and principles help in the betterment and economy of human
movement.
For example, in this sense the name of Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) comes first. He is also
considered as the "Father of Kinesiology." Aristotle was the first one to analyse the complex
style of the walking. He further described that the translatory motion of walking is caused
due to a rotatory motion of the lower limbs. He also described the geometrical analysis of the
action of the muscles. His famous written work where he has described the science of
movement are, Parts of Animals, Movement of Animals and Progression of
Animals.
