(HAT/SAT)
Harbor testing/ Sea trials (HAT/SAT)
• The purpose of tests is to verify the satisfactory conditions and correct operation of
all automated installations.
• Two type of tests :
• Dockside/Alongside the quay trials (HAT - Harbor Acceptance Test)
• Sea trials (SAT - Sea trials Acceptance Test)
• In order to reduce sea trials (very costly), major part of tests are performed
alongside the quay
• Only tests requiring full power (generators, propulsion, automatic restart of all
essential services) or sea condition (fire, PA/GA, noise and vibrations) are
performed at sea
• Sea trials allow the validation of all installations when ship is in operation
• It is important that all alarms and automatic sequences be tested at quay before
sea trials.
HAT
• Testing of installations and equipment is done in relation to the rules of classification
society and / or statutory regulations (conventions / codes): SOLAS, MARPOL, LOAD LINE,
COLREG, LSA, BWM, FSS, etc.
• The plan is drawn up by Shipyard and approved by Classification society and Client
• Tests to be performed:
- Electrical / power systems
- Alarm systems
- Safety installations (prevention,
fire fighting, life saving)
- Piping systems and deck installations
- Propulsion / steering gear systems
- Radio-navigation
- HVAC
HAT
• In automated systems, alarms to be in accordance with the rules of classification
societies and / or statutory regulations
• Alarms and Indicators - Code on Alarms and Indicators, 1995 – Resolution
A.830(19)

SAT
• Tests:
- Radio navigation: magnetic compass, autopilot
- Deck installations: anchoring, steering gear, bollard pull, bow thruster
- Propulsion systems: endurance (4h), power measurements, propulsion modes,
engine and gear box inspection,
- Machinery installations: AUT-UMS (6h-Diesel mode, 4h-Gas mode) (Unattended
Machinery Spaces)
- Safety installations: smoke test, fi-fi, lifeboat, rescue boat, PA / GA measurements
- Electrical installations: black-out, THD (total harmonic distortion)
- Confort: noise and vibration measurements on board, under water radiated noises
(URN)
- Nautical trials: speed, zig-zag, crash stop, acceleration, turning, MOB, course
stability
- Particular tests of the type of vessel: dredging, fishing
SAT
- Machinery installations: AUT-UMS (6h) (Unattended Machinery Spaces)
