FINDING AND SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING VOLUME OF A CUBE AND RECTANGULAR PRISM

Volume is the amount of space inside a space figure. It is


measured in cubic units. The most common of which are cubic
centimeters (cm³) and cubic meters (m³).
Cubic centimeters (cm³) is used to measure the volume of
smaller objects like dice, match box, shoe box and others while
cubic meters (m³) is used to measure the volume of larger
objects like swimming pool, water tank, container van and
other bigger objects

Example problem: Find the volume of a swimming pool


with the following measurement

Solution: Volume = length x width x height or V = l x w x h


So, V = l x w x h
= 6m x 3m x 2m
= 18m² x 2m
V = 36m³ Answer: the volume of the said swimming pool is 36m³.

Example Problem: Find the volume of a cube


Solution: Volume = side x side x side or V = s x s x s or V = s³
V =sxsxs
= 3cm x 3cm x 3cm
= 9cm² x 3cm
V = 27cm³ Answer: So, the volume of the cube above is 27cm³.

PROBLEMS INVOLVING TEMPERATURE IN REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS

Temperature is the hotness or coldness of an object. It can be expressed in “degrees Celsius” (˚C).
An instrument used in measuring temperature is the thermometer. It was developed by a Greek scientist and physician
Galen in AD 170 and was improved by a scientist named Galileo Galilei in 1953. A thermometer is consist of a glass bulb
which is the temperature sensor that is attached to a glass tube with number scale. The two common liquids inside the
scale that goes up and down as the temperature changes are alcohol and mercury. Each space in the number scale
represents 1˚C. The numbers below 0 are written with a minus (-) sign.

To read a thermometer, find the level of the liquid.

ORGANIZING, PRESENTING AND INTERPRETING DATA IN A LINE GRAPH

Line Graph has a vertical line called the x-axis which contains the first variable in
the collected data. As we go through the y-axis, increasing values must be
presented. Line graph helps one see easily and clearly the changes in the data
presented. A line graph has a title, one kind of information in the x-axis and
another kind of information on the y-axis. In a line graph, a line that goes up
means an increase in value, while a line that goes down from its previous point
means a decrease in value.

In constructing a line graph, we follow these steps:


1. Draw the x and y-axis.
2. Use the data from the table to label the axes.
3. Plot the points that correspond to each variable in the table.
4. Connect the points with a line segment.
5. Put a title on the graph.
