Value to be Integrated: Moral Dimension - Perseverance
Value Concept: Perseverance, under the Moral Dimension, is the value to integrated in the topic of
Dividing Polynomials using Long Division and Synthetic Division. The value is about the persistence to do
or solve things despite delay or difficulties. The topic requires a long procedure of solving polynomial
equations in order to obtain the right answer.

dividing polynomials is beneficial when you compute the time you spent
when traveling, the money you earned from selling, and the like.
Polynomial
It is a mathematical expression composed of variables, also known as
indeterminates, and coefficients.

Division
The four terms of division are the dividend, divisor, quotient, and
remainder.

Long Division
It refers to a method used in solving polynomial equations that is
beyond the simple one term polynomial or monomial.
Purplemath (n.d)

Synthetic Division
It refers to a shorter way of dividing polynomials. In this simplified
method of dividing polynomials, the only one written or used are the
coefficients. However, contrary to long division, synthetic division comes
with a condition that the dividend and the divisor must meet.
❖ Dividend should at least have two terms
❖ Divisor should be in linear binomial form of x - c

C. ILLUSTRATIVE The teacher will guide the students to solve problems involving long
EXAMPLES division and synthetic division.
Discussing new
concepts and
practicing new skills. Problem:

During the foundation week, group 1 was able to generate a total of PHP
x3 - 9x - 3x2 + 27 from selling pens. If each pen costs x + 3, how many
pens the group 1 was able to sell?

● Divide (x3 - 9x - 3x2 + 27) by (x + 3)

Solution:

Steps in doing long division (Kiw-isen, 2020, pp. 6-7):

1. Arrange the polynomials in standard form or in descending order or
powers of x. Write the problem in the form of . In some
cases where there is a missing term, automatically replace it with 0.

2. Divide the first term of the dividend by the first term of the divisor to
get the first term of the quotient:
3. Multiply the divisor by the first term of the quotient.

4. Subtract the product from the dividend then bring down the next term.

5. Repeat steps 2 to 4. At this moment, the difference and the next term
will be the new dividend.

6. Continue the process until a remainder is acquired. The remainder can

be zero or a polynomial whose degree is lower than the divisor.
Therefore, the quotient is x2 - 6x + 9

Using a similar problem, dividing the polynomials will now use synthetic
method.

● Divide (x3 - 9x - 3x2 + 27) by (x + 3)

Steps in doing synthetic division (Kiw-isen, 2020, pp. 9-10):

1. Arrange the dividend in standard form or in descending order or

powers of x. Write the coefficient of the polynomials. The divisor is x + 3
and in this method, you will transpose the coefficient which will make
the positive 3 a negative 3 (-3). Then draw a line below.

2. Bring down the first coefficient.

3. Multiply -3 by 1 and write the result below -3. Following the rules of
integers, you will add (-3 + -3) equals to -6.
4. Repeat the process until the entire column is filled.

5. The degree of the quotient is one less than the degree of the dividend.
The 1 will be x2, -6 will be -6x, and copy 9. Therefore, the quotient is
x2 - 6x + 9.

In the problem given, it is evident that long division and synthetic

division have the similar answer.

Long division = x2 - 6x + 9
Synthetic division = x2 - 6x + 9
