It might be good to unpack what
you mean by “businesses, business
industries, business sectors”
• Example: In Singapore:
Banking and finance; fintech Shopping and retail
Hotels, food and beverage, tourism Sports goods
Consumer goods Construction
Food products Education
Semiconductors [the list goes on…]
Real estate
Business support
Cybersecurity, ICT, technology
Supply chain management
Telecommunications
Oil and gas
Healthcare
It might be good to unpack the meaning
of “CSR” and “Sustainability”

• Corporate social responsibility – defined as the responsibility of

enterprises and industries for their impact on society, and,
therefore, it should be company-led. Companies can become
socially responsible by
- integrating social, environmental, ethical, consumer, and human
rights concerns into their business strategy and operations
- following the law (European Commission, 2020; United Nations,
2019).
• Sustainability – refers to a company's strategy to reduce negative
environmental impact resulting from their operations in a particular
market. An organization's sustainability practices are typically
analyzed against environmental, social, and governance (ESG)
metrics (IBM, 2021).

Attention to key terms you might
encounter in reading the literature

• SDG washing – a company in a specific industry

markets its positive contribution to some of the UN
SDGs while ignoring its negative impact on others.
• Rainbow washing - when a business, conglomerate or
other for-profit organization uses the rainbow (Pride)
colors to suggest to consumers that they support
the LGBTQI+ community, without having to put in
actual effort or produce a tangible outcome for that
community.
Finding that Variance (or Gap,
Discrepancy, Deviance) in Reading the
Literature

A gap is a problem or variance in implementation regarding the

businesses’ engagement & commitment to CSR/UN sustainability
goals
Examples of Variance or Gap
• Strong CSR rules and policies on business websites
about recycling but weak implementation and
enforcement (e.g., too much plastic waste is produced
polluting rivers and oceans)
• Fair labour standards/polices do not translate into
working conditions
• Not adhering to green economy & eco-efficiency (high
carbon footprint due to global supply chain)
• Strong health policies but public health is getting worse
• There’s strong belief in gender equality but reality in the
corporate industry shows the opposite
Suggested Literature Review Plan
Introduction (say Briefly introduce and discuss the UN SDGs. When and why were they established?
100-150 words?) Introduce the key businesses for which you examined whether these businesses
engage and commit to UN SDGs
Body Paragraphs - Discuss the extent to which these businesses report engagement with UN SDGs
(say 750 words) as a means of showing their commitment to corporate social responsibility
- How did those businesses identify and decide in choosing UN SGDs as priority
areas for engagement and action? Any difference in priority areas? Why? (e.g.,
banking and finance prioritizes SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth,
while NGOs prioritize SDG 2: Zero hunger and SDG 3: Good health and well
being to help women and children)
- Report any variance (discrepancy, divergence, deviation) in the ways these
businesses engage in such SDGs (this is where SDG washing, or rainbow
washing might be illustrated or reported, if any)
Conclusion (100 - Share an insightful comment as to why integrity matters in reporting honestly and
words?) sincerely how and why businesses engage & commit to UN SDGs with
corresponding data as evidence
- Comment that concealing real situations & legitimate data is a form of deceit,
dishonesty, corruption, and lack of principles

Hedging = expresses certainty or
uncertainty; you are not sure of
the claims you make about the
subject or area, or perhaps the
ideas are good, but the
evidence is not very strong.
