Anne Frank’s Journal: A few years I go I read the translated version of Anne Frank’s Journal
in Romanian. I then forgot about it, and earlier this year I found it on a shelf and decided to re-
read it, as it is a very significant book. Knowing that we would be dealing with such topics in
History class, I realized it would be a good idea to refresh my memory by reading the Journal
again.
Task 1: The journal depicts Anne’s life and especially her perspective on living in a time when
the Jews were hunted by the Nazi’s. At first, she was too young to realize that her life wouldn’t
continue in happiness for ever, but I assume that her parents were already preparing her for the
following years. I imagine how hard it must have been for them to live isolated in the house for
such a long time, and if we compare that to the few months some of us will have to stay indoors
due to the pandemic, it’s uncomprehensively long. I think that an important factor during their
hiding was that the Frank family had relatives and trustful friends who helped them
accommodate themselves in the Secret Annex.
Task 2: In the Journal, the Annex is described in a complex manner, so that the reader knows
which circumstances the Frank family and their friends lived in. I can’t really say if the house
would be rather poor or rich, but in the movie there is a drastic difference between Anne’s house
and the Annex. So in comparison with the original house, the Annex could be seen as rather
poor, but by far a better place to live than the horrible place Anne and other Jews will experience
after they are discovered – the concentration camps.
Task 3: The Nazi Party believed that the Jews were guilty of every flaw in the German society,
and that’s why it lead to Hitler’s rising crescendo of hate towards the Jews. The article says “In
speech after speech, they insisted that the Jews were everywhere, controlled everything, and
acted so secretly that few could detect their influence.” Over 400 rules made up by the Nazis
regarding Jews, started to make their way into the Jews’ lives, and forbade most of the activities
people could possibly think of.
Task 4 & 5: Anne’s father says that writing is a crucial activity through which Anne can make
sense of the world around her. I think this is true as people – including children – use writing as a
tool through which they can express themselves, especially in the isolated society she lived in.
Anne named her notebook Kitty, and would start each letter with “Dear Kitty…”. I have tried to
write a journal a long time ago, but it didn’t really work out for me as I didn’t have that many
things to write about. Anne might have been the person with a blooming imagination, and that is
one of the few reasons some people are very gifted when it comes to writing.
