The Festival of the Arts provides a unique arts experience of observation and participation for Girl Scout Daisies through Ambassadors. Nearly every genre of arts is included music, dance, drama, visual, classical, and folk. Workshops provide a hands-on experience for creative discovery. The possibilities are wonderful.
How Do I Start?
Read the catalog thoroughly and learn what is available for your troops grade level. (One suggestion is to highlight your troops grade level programs as you go through the catalog.) Each program identifies grade levels that are allowed for attendance. Discuss with your troop what all of you would like to attend. In choosing, be flexible and select alternative choices. All programs included in the Festival are excellent, and there are no bad choices, just preferences. Try something new and plan for variety. One purpose of the Festival is to introduce new art forms to girls. Make a deal with your girls to include something they like as well as something of your choice.
What Can I Expect?

In order to fairly distribute the programs for Festival, categories have been established. There are three (3) categories from which to choose. Your troop may attend no more than one (1) program in the Events category and no more than one (1) program in the Workshops category. You may attend a total of three (3) programs. All three (3) may be in the Performances, Exhibits and Tours category if that is your troops wish. Programs are generally scheduled at the following times: 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. (Please note in the Times column that there are some programs scheduled outside the three main times.) The time periods are planned to allow driving time from one location to the next. You do not have to fill all three time periods. For Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies, we recommend attending only two during the Festival, as girls that young get tired very quickly and have short attention spans. Please be sure to note how many programs you want to attend. Approximately one hour and fifteen minutes has been allowed for lunch; however, the exact amount of time will depend upon the ending time of your program before lunch and/or the starting time of your program after lunch. Programs are scheduled to last approximately 1 to 1 hours unless noted otherwise in the Times column.
How Do I Register?
Follow the registration instructions carefully (see page 25). Use the pullout form in the center of this catalog for registering your troop. Please fill the form out completely. Send the registration form and full payment to the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Office.

Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi are celebrating the first anniversary of their divorce, while at the same time putting on a musical version of William Shakespeares The Taming of the Shrew. This Shrew is directed by Fred and stars Fred as Petruchio and Lilli as Katherine. And if thats not enough of a tricky situation, Bill Calhoun, a member of the acting company with a gambling problem, has written an IOU for his latest lossusing Freds name. Lo and behold, a pair of gangsters arrive to collect the IOU, and from that moment on chaos ensues! Kiss Me, Kate is full of wonderful songs by Cole Porter that you are bound to recognize. You will sing your way home!

Fairy Tale Courtroom is a comedy showing the other side of several familiar fairy tales, when two of the biggest villains, the Big Bad Wolf and the Wicked Witch, are brought to trial. Both the Witch and the Wolf have been frolicking from fairy tale to fairy tale, wreaking havoc as they try to prevent the public from living happily ever after. Hear the personal accounts of what happened, told in testimonies and flashbacks from characters such as Snow White, the Three Little Pigs, Dorothy, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, and many others.

Presentation Academy presents Cats

We meet many interesting, mysterious, and funny cats who have gathered in the junk-yard to celebrate the Jellicle Ball where one cat will be selected to be reborn into a new life. Through song and danceand wonderful costumesyou will be captivated with the familiar music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show is based on stories from T. S. Eliots Old Possums Book of Practical Cats. This is the second longest-running Broadway musical in history!

Art at the Muhammad Ali Center
Creativity abounds throughout the Ali Center with a variety of art and media. A guided tour of the Ali Center will include some of Alis poetry, his sketches, and video of some classic examples of Alis humor. Admire the global collection of childrens artwork beautifully displayed in the 55-foot-long Hope and Dream wall. Carnegie Center for Art and History
This Southern Indiana gem provides insights into our local past, and very creative exhibits of modern arts and artists. The fascinating Yenawine Dioramas bring to life childhood memories from the early 1900's. "Clay, Glass and Metal - A Collaboration with Ohio Valley Creative Energy" opens in October. And, you can take a self-guided tour of a unique exhibit, Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage, that reveals how ordinary people from Southern Indiana helped overthrow the institution of slavery. Share the lives of real people who helped fugitive slaves find hope and freedom told in an interactive multi-media presentation.

Step into the Victorian lifestyle at the 19th century mansion of the William Stewart Culbertson family. Frescoed ceilings and walls are a feature of the ongoing restoration of the mansion. Explore Japan with Uchiwa Fan and Folk Dance
Crane House
Explore Japans people and culture at Crane House, The Asia Institute, Inc., with an interactive tour of the Asia Gallery that includes historical and Contemporary Asian artifacts, a traditional-styled Japanese room, and a collection of Japanese dolls. Then make an Uchiwa fan with the help of a Crane House Japanese educator and learn a Japanese folk dance using your Uchiwa fan, which is yours to take home. This visit is the next best thing to being there.

Falls of the Ohio State Park
Visit and learn about the ancient secrets revealed at the Falls of the Ohio State Park. This fascinating outdoor classroom offers a naturally exposed 220-acre Devonian fossil bedone of the largest in the world. A 14-minute film 400 Million Years at the Falls runs on the hour and half-hour. It provides an introduction to the fossil beds and the displays of the many people whose lives intersected this natural treasure. The museum and fossil beds can be explored on your own. Ask about a scavenger hunt. (Age-appropriate activity sheets are available.) Consider visiting the George Rogers Clark Cabin nearby.

Farmington Historic Plantation
One of Louisvilles finest historic homes was once the center of a hemp plantation. Built in the Federal architectural style, the house is based on plans by Thomas Jefferson. Included is a tour of the home, museum, and grounds with an emphasis on the lifestyle of the Speed family and enslaved AfricanAmericans at Farmington. Tours begin at the Visitors Center.

Howard Steamboat Museum
This guided splash from the past tour gives an insight into ship building and riverboat history. Visit the three-story, 22-room Richardson Romanesque mansion where its 1st floor features original furnishings and gives a glimpse of life into the 1800s. The house has a certain nautical air that allows visitors to imagine being a riverboat passenger on what used to be considered elaborate floating palaces. The 2nd floor is devoted to steamboating history with models and artifacts of famous riverboats.

Old Louisville Ghost Tour
Fascinating and eerie stories await you along this ghostly walk through Old Louisville, the largest Victorian district in the United States. Your selfguided tour will begin when you pick up a map at the Old Louisville Visitors Center at 218 West Oak Street and end in front of the Conrad-Caldwell House. No home tours are included. Along the way, you will meet frightfully knowledgeable storytellers who will provide the haunted highlights that accompany the historic grandeur of a time long past.

Two different programs will be shown at the planetarium .At 1:00 p.m., the show is BIG. The size of the universe is vast. The numbers used to describe it are, well, astronomical. Using Immersavision technology, "BIG" explores the Universe and takes the audience on a tour of some of its most magnificent sights. At 2:00, Laser Holidays Music Show lets you kick-start your holiday spirit with the planetariums ever-popular program, which includes such favorites as Winter Wonderland, Frosty the Snowman, and other festive holiday tunes. Sacred Heart School for the Arts presents: Cinderella

Sacred Heart Academy, in partnership with Sacred Heart School for the Arts, presents the Rogers and Hammerstein musical, Cinderella, the timeless story of purity and goodness triumphing over evil. Poor Cinderella is endlessly mistreated by her wicked stepmother and three evil stepsisters, and denied a chance to go to the Royal Ball. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella goes to the ball, meets the prince, falls in love, and lives happily ever after.

Thomas Edison House
Thomas Edison House
Revolutionary inventor Thomas Alva Edison rented a room in this Butchertown house during part of the 1 1/2 years he worked in Louisville as a telegrapher for Western Union. Built in the 1850s, this structure is one of the few remaining shotgun duplexes in the area. Your visit will include a tour of the museum where you will see many of Edisons inventions on exhibit, including cylinder and disc phonographs, incandescent light bulbs, and motion picture artifacts. A phonograph demonstration is also included.

Discover the regions only interactive art environment for families. Enter the newly redesigned Art Sparks and explore an extraordinary, hands-on gallery featuring 30 activities, multi-media, and works of art. Falls of the Ohio/Fossil Lab

Become familiar with the shapes and forms of our remote past. The Fossil Lab workshop is held in the beautiful Falls of the Ohio State Park Interpretive Center, just across the bridge in Indiana. What could be better than choosing the craft that you want to make... and not just what the rest of the troop wants to do? You have that choice at Workshop Central. Each scout will be able to select from a variety of age-appropriate crafts to create a takehome piece of personal artand you will receive instructions to share with the rest of your troop as a future meeting activity! There will be plenty of projects offered to a limited number of scouts during each hour (usually 15 to 25 participants in each group) and scouts are encouraged to try something new and different! Festival of the Arts 2011 REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS
September 20 - All reservations received in the Council office before 5:00 P.M. will be scheduled first, by random drawing. All reservations received after this date will be scheduled according to the date on which they are received until the Festival is full or when registration closes on Friday, October 15th. October 3 - Deadline for additions to your troops first round Festival reservation. Additions cannot be made after this date. If you need to add to your troops reservation before the October 5th deadline, you must first call the Council office (636-0900 or 1-888-771-5170). Use the Additions registration form located in the back of this brochure to add girls to your Festival registration. October 14 - Due to the volume of this event, registration closes and no changes can be made after this date. October 19 -Troop schedule, tickets, and patches will be mailed beginning on this date.
The Festival registration process is designed to be fair to all new and experienced and to allow time for girls to be included in the decisions about their schedule. Troop must be registered for the 2011-2012 Girl Scout year. The troop registration must be received in the council office in order for your Festival reservation to be processed. Troop must register at least 2 adults for your Festival reservation to be processed. Read Volunteer Essentials/ Safety Activity Checkpoints for safety guidelines and for adult/girl ratio guidelines. The number of adults registering for Festival is limited, where noted, because of seating capacity. Total number of girls paid for Festival cannot exceed the number of girls registered in your troop. Otherwise, your Festival reservation will not be scheduled until the additional girl registration and payment is received in the council office. Cost is $11.00 per person (including all adults) which includes a patch and admission to programs. Absolutely NO tagalongs (any girl under 5, any girl not registered with GSUSA, or any boy) will be allowed! This popular event is for Girl Scouts (girls/adults) only. Junior Workshops
Girls may attend one workshop from their grade level. Workshops are available for girls participation only. Workshops are approximately 1 to 1 1/4 hours in length unless noted otherwise in the Times column. Leaders are expected to provide supervision of their girls during the workshop and to assist if requested by the instructor.
Adventure in Cloth Making
For an adventure in clothmaking, a slide show will help the girls understand how pioneers first learned to make cloth. Twisties, a simple twisted cord that becomes a bracelet or necklace, will be made by each girl. This will demonstrate how yarns are plied together to make a single strand for weaving. Each girl will have a chance to weave on a cardboard loom as well as a few rows on a harness loom.

Glass Etching
Beautiful etched glass is used to indicate fine, expensive glassware. With todays techniques and tools it is a skill that anyone can acquire to produce fabulous results using readily available glass. You will learn the differences in stencils, what to consider when stenciling a glass item, and how to make your own stencil designs. Then, you will try your hand etching a small glass item with etching cream and a stencil that you take home.

Girls will cut their own linoleum blocks with hand tools, and a limited edition of prints will be made on a table top platen press dating from the 1930s. A portfolio exchange will take place among the girls and everyone will take home an exclusive set of her own art prints.

Japanese Tea Ceremony
The Japanese tea ceremony is a choreographic ritual of preparing and serving Japanese green tea, together with traditional Japanese sweets to balance with the bitter taste of the tea. The whole process is not about drinking tea, but is about aesthetics, using predefined movements, and preparing a bowl of tea from ones heart. Everyone is seated on the floor and the host always considers the guests viewpoint with every movement and gesture.

An introduction to a heritage skill craft will be given by Steve Payton, a representative of Tandy Leather Company. Each girl will make a wristband and key chain using stamping tools and colored markers. Leaders are asked to be available to assist if needed.
Line Dancing
Jamie Marshall, six-time winner of the line dancing world championship, will share with you her love of this fun line dance form. You will learn todays hottest line dances to different styles of music. Please wear leather-soled shoes or dance in your socks.

Sparkles and Spurs
Led by members of the Sparkles and Spurs Line Dance Team, girls will learn a dance that will be recorded on videotape and downloaded to a computer. Girls will have input on editing the video and will receive a DVD of their routine once editing is complete. The dance routine will be part line dance and part hula! Costuming will be provided that will coordinate with the music and dance. The clip will become part of the Sparkles and Spurs weekly show, which airs on Insight Public Access Channel 98. Girl Scouts will be told approximately when the clip will air.

Stonecutter
Learn the art of stone cutting. Each girl will be able to chip/carve a part of the 100th Girl Scout anniversary time capsule that will be on display at the Girl Scout Program and Learning Center. Small pieces of limestone that are chipped off the larger piece will be turned into a keepsake for you to take home.

Workshop Central
What could be better than choosing the craft that you want to make... and not just what the rest of the troop wants to do? You have that choice at Workshop Central. Each girl will be able to select from a variety of age-appropriate crafts to create a takehome piece of personal artand you will receive instructions to share with the rest of your troop as a future meeting activity! There will be plenty of projects offered to a limited number of girls during each hour (usually 15 to 25 participants in each group) and girls are encouraged to try something new and different! Adults will be asked to assist as needed.
