The Urban Leopards of Mumbai

In the U.S., residents of cities like Los Angeles aren’t surprised

to see coyotes on the streets at night. In New York City,

peregrine falcons make their nests on tall buildings. In the U.K.,

foxes are just as likely to be seen in urban areas as in the English

countryside, searching for food in parks and gardens.

Everywhere, it seems, wild animals are adapting to increasing

urbanization.

In Mumbai, India, the situation is slightly more challenging. The city is home to 20 million people * and

around 30 leopards. The leopards live in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), a large forest in the heart

of the city. It is 104 km2 in size and home to more than 1.000 species of animals and plants. This means

that people living close to SGNP are also close to the leopards’ habitats.

In the 1990’s and early 2000’s, there were a number of leopard attacks on humans. According to leopard

expert Vidya Athreya, introducing endangered leopards to the park from other parts of India contributed

to the problem. Not enough space meant the animals had to move to find new territory, bringing them

into contact with humans. After the introduction stopped, the attacks mostly stopped too.

However, despite the fall in attacks, contact between people and leopards has become more frequent

than before, leading to concerns among the local community. SGNP conservationist Krishna Tiwari says

migration from rural areas means Mumbai continues to grow. People like the idea of living close to nature,

and developers persist in building homes close to, or even inside, the park. Tiwari is keen to explain that

people living in houses are safe. When attacks happen, they are usually in slum areas, where people live

in less secure homes and have to go out at night.

Contact can frequently turn into conflict. So, the city of Mumbai, with the help of conservationists like

Tiwari and Athreya has started the delicate task of educating local people about how to co-exist with t he
