Introduction
Do you ever feel as though you are sleepwalking through life with no real idea
of what you want and where you are headed? Does the end of the year come
around and you aren’t sure where the time has gone? Are you frustrated that
you haven’t been able to achieve your full potential or realize your dreams?
Does it seem as if life is passing you by? Do you make New Year’s resolutions,
only to break them three days into the new year? If so, you are not alone.
Typically, less than 10 percent of resolutions have been kept by the year’s end,
and 25 percent fail before January 15th1.
If you answered “yes” to any of the above, you’re in the right place. Best
Year Journal is your guide to a more fulfilling year ahead, during which you
will achieve more than you ever thought possible and learn to prioritize what’s
really important to you.
Modern life is hectic, and juggling the many demands placed on us can
leave us little time to truly connect with ourselves. Best Year Journal will give
you the space to have some quality time with yourself. Read on to discover
what enriches you. Find what really makes you happy, learn how to focus
your energy, uncover the secrets to balancing your professional and private
commitments, and ultimately gain the confidence to become a better version of
yourself in the coming year.

The End of Year Review
We often have many aims and expectations for the year ahead. Checking in with
ourselves at the end of the previous year and asking whether we did our best
to accomplish our goals allows us to evaluate the past with understanding and
compassion. Carrying out an end-of-year review will provide personal feedback
and a sincere analysis of the previous 12 months, so we can be more confident
about what actions we need to take to ensure that the next year is our best yet.
This annual exercise will help nurture and develop sparks of inspiration,
celebrate your uniqueness, appreciate all the good in your life, track your
personal growth, and allow you to strategically plan—rather than simply
imagine—all the great and beautiful things you want your future to hold.
Many of us are guilty of judging ourselves too harshly. Rather than
encouraging judgment, an end-of-year review empowers us to accept ourselves
exactly as we are. By taking a step back, we can see our lives in full focus,
recognize our milestones over the past 12 months, highlight what we are grateful
for, and acknowledge any bumps in the road. This provides us with a clear
analysis of the past year, so that we can set achievable goals for the year ahead.
If reflecting on the previous year seems daunting, start with the following
simple exercise to extract wisdom from any recent negative experiences.
1. Take a few minutes out of your day to ask yourself honestly what didn’t go
well over the last 12 months. Jot your thoughts down on a piece of paper, or
make a note in your phone.
2. Allow the thoughts to come without judgment, accepting any emotions
that might surface.
3. Read through your notes and see how reflecting on each event makes you
feel in this moment.
4. Congratulate yourself for taking the first step toward a more positive
year ahead!

How to Use the
Best Year Journal
You can fill in Best Year Journal at the end of December, in January, on your
birthday or any other time you feel you need a fresh start. It’s never too late or too
soon to change your life for the better. You are free to create your own timeline.
The only rule is that there are no rules—you are your own power for change.
Acknowledging life lessons, challenges, and mistakes without letting
them define who you are is a great act of courage and mindfulness. Reviewing
key areas of your life annually promotes an understanding of what success,
satisfaction, and fulfillment means for you in each area of your life. It will also
help you to become aware of how you invested your energy over the past year.
You will feel clearer and more confident about what you must do in order to
make your next year your best one ever. Discovering more deeply what truly
matters to you will help you to set more authentic goals for the coming year.
As you work through the journal, take the time to reflect on your life over
the previous 12 months. Ask yourself why you pursued specific goals. What
made them important to you? What was your original intention? Rushing
into action without acknowledging your true motivation could hinder your
success and, ultimately, your happiness. However, when planned with purpose
and mindfulness, your goals for the coming year will be achievable and life-
enhancing, helping you on the way to your best year yet. Instead of measuring
your life in wins and failures, this journal will prompt you to create new
rituals and habits that will make your life more meaningful. Start right now
by committing to write frequently in this journal and take the first step toward
positively transforming your life.

What steps have you taken to maximize
your well-being?
Taking care of our well-being is essential for good physical and mental health.
Sometimes these steps will be quite obvious, such as making time for regular
exercise, achieving a healthy and balanced lifestyle, or attending regular
health screenings. At other times they will be more subtle, such as making a
commitment to eat clean, going to bed a little earlier, or remembering to wear
sunscreen. Celebrate every step you have taken in the right direction.

Here you will learn to let go of sorrows, anxieties,
and concerns, creating a sense of inner peace by
reviewing and evaluating your life. Letting go of what
we can’t change or fix enables us to focus our energy

endlessly seeking impossible solutions. Finding the
courage to release what is holding you back sets the
path for a great year ahead. Prepare to take a deep

Letting go is often easier said than done; many of us repeat mistakes time and
time again because we don’t know how to approach a situation differently, or
we fear change. The exercise below will help you to leave unwanted baggage in
the previous year and will enable you to move forward into the new year with a
lighter emotional load.
1. Sit comfortably in a private space where you can’t be overheard and won’t
be disturbed. Close your eyes and breathe naturally for a few seconds.
2. Allow your mind to settle on the experience or event you would like to let
go of. Gently bring the thought to the forefront of your mind and sit with
it for a few moments.
3. Notice any emotions that arise. Don’t hold them back; allow them to fill
you up from head to toe. If you feel like shouting, really let rip. Howl,
growl, and wail. If tears come, embrace them. Imagine the negative
feelings leaving your body. Be uninhibited and free in this moment.
4. When the time feels right, bring your attention back to your breath. Sit
quietly for a few moments, then open your eyes. Note how this experience
made you feel.

Vision and
46
Clarity
What is your vision for the next 12 months? Defining
your vision is key for a successful year. Setting a
goal without visualizing the final result doesn’t allow
you the space to explore your motivation and can
lead to a never-ending quest. Engaging with your
innermost wishes can lead to actions that really make
a difference and impact your life for the better.
In this part of the journal, you will define a
theme for the upcoming year to align your actions
and decisions on what you truly desire to accomplish.
You will also find the Priority List, a list of 3 to 5
goals–your big rocks–that would make the next year
your best year ever. You would like to fill in your aims
straight away, or you could do it later, once you have
finished defining and prioritizing goals that are the
most relevant to you.
To help you gain clarity about where you want
to go, we have proposed some categories you can
separate your goals, dreams and plans into. Fill out as
many sections as you like, pick those that truly speak
to you, or create new ones.

Create a theme for the year ahead that really motivates you. Choose a word
or phrase that describes what you want to accomplish and let this inspire your
activities for each day, week, and month. When deciding on your theme, reflect
deeply on what you want the following 12 months to be like. Your theme will
help you to stay focused, as well as providing a starting point for any decision-
making processes. It may be driven by a desire to find equilibrium in your
life—for example, serenity, tranquility, balance—or inspired by practical goals
relating to your personal or professional sphere, such as unity, creativity, growth.
Your theme will be personal to you: there is no right or wrong area to focus on.

Use this space to set yourself measurable and attainable goals. Separate your
goals into categories to ensure they are balanced, otherwise you may find
you are setting too many goals in one area of your life and not giving enough
attention to another. Be sure to define your goals; be precise. If you would like
to be in better shape physically, ask yourself what exactly that will look like for
you. Maybe you want to be able to fit into a favorite pair of jeans that are hiding
in your closet, or perhaps you are aiming to run a 10K. Being specific with your
goals will make it much easier to figure out a plan for how to achieve them.
On the following pages there are some proposed categories. Don’t feel
pressured to fill them all. Select sections that are important and relevant to you,
and feel free to create your own if these don’t work for you. For each category,
list from 3 to 5 goals. Do it right away or get back to visualizing your goals in
particular focus areas later, as your journey evolves.
Keep in mind that a happy life is not just about external goals and
accomplishments; it’s also about making time for the people you love and the
things that bring you joy, make you laugh, and give you the opportunity to play
and be creative.

Health and Well-being
This is about setting goals that will help you stay healthy and feel good. It might
be the single most important area for your goal-setting, since everything else in
your life depends on your continued good health and mental well-being. This
is, consistent physical activity, empowering healthy habits, clean and balanced
diet, good quality sleep, self-care rituals and emotional intelligence. What are
you going to do this year to take care of your body? How do you want to feel
physically? How will you nourish your mental health? How will you ensure that
you have enough energy? Keep in mind that in order to accomplish all of the
other goals on your list, you will need an abundance of energy, and energy comes
from having a healthy, strong body and nurtured mind.

Self-Growth
Each day offers a number of opportunities for learning and self-development,
because life is a work in progress. Reflect on the following questions: What am
I going to do this year to expand my mind, knowledge and experience? What
do I want to learn? What specific skills do I want to attain? What do I want to
read and watch? What events do I want to attend? What people do I want to be
around? How can I work on my attitude to maintain a positive mindset? Be brave
and set big goals that will inspire you to get outside your comfort zone. Make the
commitment to invest in the greatest asset to your success–yourself.

Giving and Contributing
It may sound counterproductive, but by helping others we can often help ourselves
in the process. Volunteering at a soup kitchen, supporting the cause that is close to
your heart, organizing a park or beach clean, lending a sympathetic ear, or helping
out your community are all small gestures that can have a big impact. Even if
our lives are hectic we can find the time to be kind, compassionate, and tolerant
toward others. This costs nothing and the mental benefits are huge. Research
shows that those who care for others tend to live longer too2, so it’s a win-win
situation. What will you do to leave a positive mark on this world and make a
difference in people’s lives?

Love and Romance
Romantic relationships, if we choose to pursue them, are not only important
for companionship and procreation. Psychologists have observed that happy
romantic relationships can actually help us to become better versions of
ourselves, a phenomenon known as The Michelangelo Effect3. If you would
like to find a life partner in the coming year, set this as one of your goals. Be
precise. Consider the personality traits you would like your future partner to
have. Recognize what appeals to you and reflect on the positives and negatives
of previous relationships to help yourself move forward with confidence.
If you are already in a relationship, think about how it could be improved.
Do you still go on a special dates and celebrate your love? Have you fallen into
the trap of taking each other for granted? What steps will you take this year
to enhance your relationship? How can you spend more quality time together?
Do you need to work on strengthening your bond? What couple rituals can you
build together? Write it all down and use this space for ideas.

Spiritual
Working on our spiritual selves isn’t necessarily about religion. Spirituality
encompasses our beliefs and values, is intrinsically linked with self-awareness,
and can be a wonderful journey of self-discovery. Ask yourself what spiritual
practices you would like to begin or maintain, and how much time you
would like to dedicate to them. This may be prayer, meditation, visualization,
mindfulness practice, or simply taking time to sit quietly and be with yourself.
Set goals that feed your soul and be sure to dedicate enough time to this
important aspect of your life.

We need recreation to refresh our body and mind. Take a moment to think
about the activities that bring you enjoyment, amusement, pleasure and fun.
Ask yourself: How can you make your leisure time more interesting, engaging
and enjoyable? Maybe you want to start a new hobby or revive the tradition of
playing board games with your friends and family at Friday night dinner. Join
a creativity art workshop, visit museums on the weekends, have playdates with
your children, sign up for swimming, painting or dance classes, play recreation
sport with a group, or simply sunbathe and relax. For a balanced life, choose
some skills that relate to your personal and professional development and some

Happiness
Ask yourself honestly and truthfully: How happy were you last year? We can’t
always be happy all of the time, but, if looking back at the previous year doesn’t
bring you joy, it might be time to make some changes. Start with defining what
happiness means to you because it is very personal. We are all unique, and
different things appeal to different people. Your moments of joy might come when
you’re relaxing in nature with a good book, or you might feel at your happiest
when you’re socializing with friends.
What people, activities, and places bring you joy, and how can you ensure
there is plenty of this in the coming year? What is your roadmap to happiness?
Maybe you want to dedicate the next 12 months to work on your self-love and self-
acceptance, core values, fulfilment, and motivation. Maybe you want to journal
daily, discover your spirituality, declutter your life, live in your dream house,
nurture relationships with your children, go on adventure, or find your life partner.
Whatever it is that lights you up, set goals to do more of these things and make
them happen.

Your Personal
Action Plan
88
Once you have created your vision for the year ahead
and set your annual goals, it is important to create a
clear strategy and action plan for how you will achieve
each of your goals. The best way to tackle this is to work
backward from the desired result and ascertain what
action is needed to get you there. Divide the year into
quarters, months, and weeks, and define what
milestones need to be accomplished at different points
of the year. Deadlines make you more accountable and
mean it is more likely that you will reach all your goals.
We gave you space to list down 29 action points,
but feel free to fill out first what is more important, and
then come back later to plan the rest of your goals. Add
your action points to your planner, diary, or calendar,
and schedule time to make them a reality. You can use
the Productivity Planner (or any other productivity tool
published by Intelligent Change) to break your strategy
down into small and digestible daily actions and to
track your progress.
Don’t underestimate what can be achieved in
a year. By creating a strategic plan for how you will
achieve your goals and breaking the route to success
down into daily actions, you will see how small steps
can lead to great things. A year from now, you will thank

This is a bonus exercise that will help you go deeper and expand on your vision
for the upcoming year. This exercise is optional as it is time-consuming, but it
is also rewarding as it helps you gain extra clarity on where you are heading.
By writing a detailed and clear vision of your future, you are, in a way, planting
a mental seed that will help you act and make decisions to nurture it to its
potential.
Establish a direction for yourself. Envision your remarkable life. Get
specific about all aspects of your life. Dream big, go into details, and don’t hold
yourself back. Visualize yourself a year from now. Write down everything you
would like to have achieved and the milestones you would like to have reached
in the last 12 months. Write in the past tense, as if your achievements have
already happened. Ask yourself:

Now you have your personal action plan, you are well on the way to creating
your best year yet. Don’t forget to review your goals and check in with your
progress regularly. This will not only remind you why you set the goals in the
first place, it will also help you to stay motivated and flag any areas that need
a little more attention. Every week and month, remember to:

Celebrating Your
Milestones
Congratulations! You’ve just finished your Best Year Journal. That has to feel
great, admit it.
That is one year of reflecting on your life, discovering more deeply what
truly matters to you, creating your personal action plan with purpose and
intention, and achieving your goals. You committed to unleash your full
potential by breaking the route to success down into daily actions and positive
changes. You wrote frequently in this journal and kept track of your progress.
Incredible. You have our respect.
This is also a great time to celebrate your milestones. Take a moment to
review your experiences, acknowledge the life lessons you have learned on your
journey toward a happy and fulfilling year, and thank yourself for positively
transforming your life.
