Type of lesson: lesson of reinforcement

Content: - grammar structure: MODALS ( CAN, MAY, MUST)

-vocabulary: lyrics of song “ The Show Must Go On”-Queen

Main focus: systematization and revision of modal verbs

Time: 50 minutes

Competences: By the end of lesson the students will have been able:

1. Recognize the modals,


2. Create oral sentences with modal verbs,
3. Complete sentences with correct form of the modals,
4. To find the missing words in the text.

Lesson objectives:

ACTIVITY 1:- to create positive attitude towards learning English( Good


morning!;Organisation; Presence);

- to check students’ previous lesson knowledge;

- to check students’ homework

ACTIVITY 2: -to warm up the students and involve them from the start:

-to introduce the subject of the lesson: MODAL VERBS

ACTIVITY 3: -to put the verbs in order to form sentences;

-to translate into English ten sentences;

- to find the missing words in the text and to underline the
modals.

ACTIVITY 4: -to evaluate students’ activity;

-to assign students homework

Teaching aids: worksheets, text, blackboard, dictionary and text hearing.

Methods ans techniques: explanation, observation, discussion, dialogue,


deductive approach, examples, reading comprehension text, audition and
exercices.

Evaluation:

-initial: the previous lesson knowledge, checking the homework;

-continue: through activities, worksheets;

-final: through oral and written feedback

PROCEDURE

ACTIVITY 1: organisation, the previous lesson knowledge, checking


homework

Aims: :- to create positive attitude towards learning English

- to check students’ previous lesson knowledge;

- to check students’ homework

Estimated time: 10 min.

Methods: conversation, explanation Interaction: S-T, T-S, lockstep, whole


class

Teacher asks two or three students to presente the previous lesson knowledge
and the other students to listen and then say if they agree with them or thew may
comment about it. Teacher agrees or corrects them if is necessary.

ACTIVITY 2: presentation of the theoretical part

Aims: : -to warm up the students and involve them from the start:

-to introduce the subject of the lesson: MODAL VERBS (CAN. MAY,
MUST)

Estimated time: 15 min.

Methods: explanation, exemplification, dialog, deductive approach.

Interaction: S-T, T-S, lockstep,


whole class

Teacher tells students the objectives of the present class and she writes the title
on the board.Teacher writes on thr blackboard some informations about
MODAL VERBS.

Modal verbs are used together with order verbs to change their meaning by
expressing ideas such as: possibility, probability, permission or intention.

Modal verbs are: can, may, must, could, might, have to, need,shall,should,will,
would, ought to, dare.

We study today: CAN, MAY, MUST.

CAN

-expresses capability or ability:

e.g. I can read.(ability) You can smell thr roses.(capability)

-expresses permission or possibility:

e.g. Can I use the book?(permission) You can go home after you send all the
letters.(possibility)

expresses polite or offer:

e.g. Can you give me the address?(polite) Can I help you?(offer)

Negative form: CAN+NOT=CAN’T

MAY

-expresses permission(in formal English):

e.g. May I open the window?

-expresses possibility( can be remplaced by:’it is possible’, ‘maybe’, ‘perhaps’)

e.g. The little girl may be at home,but I’m not sure.

MUST

-expresses obligation ans necessity:

e.g. You must do you homework.(obligation) You must show me your identity
card.(necessity)

-expresses deduction;probability:

e.g. She looks very pale,she must be tired.

-expresses certainly:

e.g. They mustbe at home, the light is on,

-expresses advice,insintence:

e.g. You must go on,it is late.

Negative form: MUST+NOT=MUSTN’T

e.g. You mustn’t smoke in a gas station.

General caracteristics:

1. They function as auxiliary verbs;


2. They don’t have tense or aspect;
3. They don’t recive the ‘-s’ at the 3rd person singular
4. They are in more cases followed by the short infinitive.

Students note the new knowledges on the notebooks.

ACTIVITY 3 practice (vocabulary and grammar- worksheet 1, worksheet 2 and


worksheet 3)

Students are grouped in pairs,get the worksheets and teacher instructs them.

1)They have to put the verbs in order to form sentences

2)They have to translate into English ten sentences.

3)They have to find the missing words in the text and to underline the modals.

Teacher checkes and helps them.

ACTIVITY 4: evaluation and homework assignment

Aims: -to evaluate students’ activity;

-to assign students homework

Teacher evaluates students’ activity during the class.
