I have always had a passion for health care and being able to provide patient care.

When I

was in high school, I always thought I would end up going to school for nursing. I took a lot of

college courses that would help prepare me for entering the nursing program. After my first few

semesters of college, I quickly grew this doubt of not wanting to pursue nursing anymore but I

still had this desire to work in the health care field. I found myself researching different careers

and had this little passion inside me to work in the dental field.

I quickly applied to the Dental Assisting Program at Kirkwood. There was no waitlist so I

was able to get in right away. I completed the program in 1 year and began working at a general

office. During my time as a Dental Assistant I always had this dream of becoming a dental

hygienist. I craved more of that one on one interaction with patients and I wanted to work more

independently. I remember researching all the requirements I needed to be able to get into the

dental hygiene program and be on the waitlist. I completed all the prerequisites and I waited for

three years to get accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program.

The three years it took to get into the program was definitely worth the wait! I remember

at the beginning of the program having so much anxiety about this new career I was trying to

pursue and just not knowing how it was going to turn out. It was very intimidating at the

beginning learning a whole new side of dentistry that I had never been exposed to before. I have

always had a passion for caring for patients and knew this program was exactly where I was

meant to be.

I have gained so much knowledge and education about dental hygiene in the past two

years during the program. I am so thankful for all of the hard and challenging times throughout

the program because it has made me grow as a person and as a clinician. I am so grateful for all

of the instructors who believed in me when I did not believe in myself. They have helped me
mature into the person I am today and have shaped me into the dental hygienist I am soon going

to be.

This program has also given me everlasting friendships that I will cherish forever. Little

did I know these people would become so important to me. I am so thankful that I never gave

up on that little dream I had of becoming a dental hygienist because it truly is one of the best

and most rewarding things I have went through. I am honored to be a part of the Kirkwood

Dental Hygiene Program Class of 2023.
