TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Chapter 6- Jem’s PDV

"All right," I replied to Dill.

Only Scout decided to keep her paranoia, which made me slightly angry.

"You don’t have to follow us, you can go home." I told her, annoyed.

"Remember what Atticus told us, we can’t go!"

I was not the type to belittle myself to past defeats, this time I would manage to solve this mystery
without anyone taking us.

"We’re not going to do anything, Scout. We’re only going to the lamppost and back."

She sighed and without paying attention we went down the streets in silence. We listened to the sweet
nocturnal murmurs of the great people of our street, sometimes even the laughter of Miss Stephanie.

The presence of Scout and her sights began to really upset me.

"Why did you wait until tonight?"

I was watching her attentively , my eyes just wanted to make her understand how stupid her question
was. It made sense, didn’t it? Nobody could see us at night. Atticus was so concentrated by his books
that he would not even hear the end of the world, but especially because it was easier to see a house
from the inside at night than during the day.

-Jem…please…

I breathed a loud sigh and answered her one last time.

-Scout, for the last time, shut your trap or go home. I swear to God, every day that passes, you behave
more and more like a girl!

I imagine that this remark clearly understood that Dill and I were more than determined and that she
was obliged to follow us after this.

We thought it was better to crawl under the high wire fence at the back of the Radleys' court to have a
better chance of going unnoticed. The fence enclosed a large garden and a small wooden shed.

I raised the fence and then made a sign to Dill to slip under it. Scout in turn did the same so that I
could pass narrowly.
Not a sound, I said in a low voice. Don’t get a row of collars whatever you do, it makes a noise to
wake the dead !

Scout well behind us , went one step at a minute. Impatient, I waved to her to hurry, which she did. At
last we gathered together in the gate separating the vegetable garden from the garden itself. I touched
it blindly, which made it creak.

-Spit on it, murmured Dill.

Short essay

Scout at this point in the book, handles several conflicts in his life. She learned at school rather
quickly that her father, Atticus, was going to defend a black man from having raped a white woman,
which sucked many reactions at school, including that of Cecil Jacobs, whom she restrained herself
from beating.

“Cecil Jacobs made me forget. He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch’s
daddy defended n******. I denied it, but told Jem.” p.99

Scout went to Atticus and asked him why he had done it, he replied;

“For a number of reasons, The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t
even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” p.100

Atticus then told Scout to stop fighting for this kind of thing, only on Christmas Eve when Francis
began to say atrocities about Atticus, especially on the Robinson affair, which clearly didn’t please
Scout, she insulted him grossly and then beat him.

This case is the problem that Scout must face without getting carried away, while trusting Atticus.
