simple end connections in a plane truss. The other web members meeting at the ends of this member
are connected on the same side of the gusset plates. Steel is A36 with Fy = 250 MPa.
Ag = 5460 mm2 r = 46.2 mm, b = 153 mm, t = 19 mm, I = 11.7 x 10^6 mm4
Example: Determine the LRFD and ASD axial compressive strength of a 2 meter long L102x77x10 with
simple end connections (long leg welded to gusset) in a plane truss. The other web members meeting at
the ends of this member are connected on the same side of the gusset plates. Steel is A36 with Fy = 250
MPa.
Compute the LRFD and ASD allowable axial strength of the built-up column. The effective lengths of the
column are KLx = 9m, and KLy = 4.5m. Use Fy = 250 MPa.
Properties of W200x72
Ag = 9100 mm2, d = 216 mm, Ix = 76.6 x10^6 mm4, Iy = 25.3 x 10^6 mm4
Properties of C225x30
Ag = 3790 mm2, xc = 14.8 mm, tw = 11.4 mm, Ix = 25.3 x 10^6 mm4, Iy = 1 x 10^6 mm4
The built-up column shown consist of two C375x75 welded to a PL 12 mm x 400 mm. The column is
3.5m long and is hinged at both ends. Determine the LRFD design strength and the ASD allowable
strength if the column is fully effective and axially loaded. Use Fy = 345 MPa.
