4. Express your insights about the novel.

Freedom is the quality or state of being free and the absence of necessity,
coercion, or constraint in choice or action. It is the liberation from slavery or from the
power of another. One has freedom if he possesses the power and resources to fulfill
one's purposes.

For Jose Rizal, freedom is one’s love for our own country which was expressly
written in the novel “Noli Me Tangere”. The lack of freedom was manifested in our
society during the Spanish colonies and because of this chaos he desired our country’s
freedom. Rizal envisioned that Filipinos’ freedom are worthy of credence.

Rizal once claimed that the gift of reason with which we are endowed must be
brightened and utilized in order to overcome ignorance which causes slavery in our
society. He expressed his disapproval on the armed conflict against the Spaniards. Rizal
even ellaborated in his writings that reforms must also come from above because
reforms that come from below are upheavals both violent and transitory.

The situation of lack of freedom is different in our society nowadays. Filipinos’

freedom come in different form as embodied in the Constitution of the Philippines. As a
democratic and republic state, we have several forms of freedom such as the right to
freedom of speech and expression, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and the right to
petition. The free exercise of religion; the right of abode and the right to travel and the right to
information on matters of public concern are also written in the Constitution.

The Freedom Constitution was intended as a transitional constitution to ensure

democracy and the freedom of the people and provided for an orderly transfer of power to the
people. Unlike during Spanish times, the people have no voice to speak for the truth and to fight
against the abusive and corrupt government.

In my own opinion, the novel Noli Me Tangere exposes obsolete and medieval judiciary
practices by the church and also lack of freedom. Ibarra was imprisoned to death. He was
persecuted in a manner that is out of justice and without due process of law. Sisa was also
arrested, and Crispin was maltreated by friars.

Indeed, lack of freedom was seen as a tool for our fellowmen to work hard to attain the
independende and to have come up with the democracy as enshrined in our freedom
Constitution.
