AMENDMENT SHEET
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to provide the requirement and responsibilities for painting activities.
2. SCOPE
The scope of this procedure covers the surface preparation and painting activities of mild steel
component.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES
The production manager ensures adequate provision of all resources needed for the successful
execution of the work scope. He ensures that experienced and skilled persons are involved in the
execution of the work scope. He is responsible for managing HSE for these operations.
QA/QC Engineer shall be responsible for control and verification of the implementation of this method
statement. He shall be responsible for all quality control and quality assurance functions.
4. PROCEDURAL DETAILS
4.1 REFERENCES
All of work shall be carried out according to the various project specifications and following references.
• ISO 8502: Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related
products-Test assessment of surface cleanliness. Part 1-12.
• ISO 8503: Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related
products- Surface roughness characteristics of blast cleaned steel substrates. Part 1-
5
• SSPC Specification (Steel Structures Painting Council)
• All painting materials shall be delivered to shop by the paint manufacture’s in unopened original
containers and in good condition. Product name, batch numbers and all other salient information
(manufacture’s name, color etc.) shall be mentioned on the original containers.
• The paint materials shall be stored in accordance with the instructions of the paint manufacturer.
This means, in general, that painting materials should be stored in a dry, cool well ventilated and
frost-free area.
• All paint material must be used within the manufacturer specified period. Paint shall be used in strict
rotation according to batch number and shelf life.
• Paints which have exceeded the shelf life shall be set aside and removed from painting storage area.
Expired paint shall not be used.Abrasives shall be stored in dry and clean area.
Prior to surface preparation the surface shall be free from weld slag, spatters, oil, grease, drilling and
cutting compounds and other surface contaminants. Sharp edges on corners shall be smoothened.

BLASTING & PAINTING PROCEDURE

• Items will be blast cleaned to achieve the specified surface preparation either in the auto-blast facility
using steel shot and/or manually using garnet.
• The grade of surface finish and the surface profile shall be as per project specification or as per paint
manufacture recommendation.
• Mask areas which are to remain unpainted, such as the contact surface of friction grip type bolted
connections, after blast-cleaning and prior to painting or as per specification.
• All surface that have been prepared using abrasive blast cleaning shall have traces of blast debris and
dust that must be removed from the surfaces including all pockets and corners by blowing with dry
oil free compressed air or brushing with a clean brush made from bristle or fiber.
• Prior to paint application blast cleaned surface shall be checked for dust and presence of soluble salt
by an approved method.
• The surface profile, of a blast cleaned surface, shall also be subject to inspection prior to application
of the prime coat. Inspection and testing shall be used to determine and maintain the appropriate
surface profile.
• Profile shall be checked using Testex Tape, and one sample shall be taken per 100 m2 of prepared
surface and minimum of 3 times per blaster per day during the progress of the work.
• All paints shall be mixed and thinned in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s instructions.Paint
shall be thoroughly stirred to give a uniform consistency before use. Paint that is supplied with more
than one component shall be thoroughly mixed in the preparations laid down by the paint
manufacturer. If the thinner is required, only designated thinner should be used and thinning rate
may be adjusted according as per data sheet recommendations.
• Coating that contain heavy metallic pigments that may settle out shall be mechanically stirred or
agitated during application.
• If required, allow mixed multi-component coatings to sweat in before application and use within the
time-allowed pot life.
• All structural steel, bolting material, ladders, cages, handrails, and floor plates shall be corrosion
protected in accordance with the Client’s painting specification.
• Airless spray method shall be used to achieve uniform coating. Roller or brush will be used on areas
that are hard to reach by airless spray.
• Prior to application of each coat, all welds, edges, corners, holes and areas not fully reachable by
spray shall be stripe–coated by brush to ensure that these areas have the minimum film thickness
specified for each coat and for the completed system and to ensure continuity of the coating.
• All surfaces that will be inaccessible after assembly shall be painted prior to assembly.
• All recommendations as stated in the relevant product data should be followed.
• The first coat of paint shall be applied within 4 hours after surface preparation as taken place, and
before any re-rusting or contamination occurs.
• Before the application of each coat of paint, over coating interval shall be followed in line with the
time and temperature conditions given by the paint manufacturer.
• Each coat is to be applied uniformly over the entire surface. Runs and sags shall be brushed out
immediately or the paint shall be removed and the surface re-sprayed.
• The handling and transportation of painted items shall not be carried out until the paint has fully
cured.
• Coating thickness shall be measured in accordance with SSPC PA2. DFT of any coating shall be greater
than 80% of the specified DFT and shall be less than 120% of specified DFT.
4.8 REPAIR
4.9 INSPECTION
• All blast cleaned surfaces shall be inspected for proper cleaning and anchor profile using SSPC
specification visual comparators, prior to painting.
• The DFT of each coat shall be checked in accordance with this procedure using DFT gauge that has
been properly calibrated.
• Inspection of coating materials upon receipt of materials.
• Verification that shelf life of coating materials has not been exceeded.
• Verification of that storage conditions for the materials are properly maintained.
• Verification of adequacy of cleaning and blasting equipment.
• Confirmation of surface preparation and application of painting work in proper specified atmospheric
conditions (temperature, humidity and etc.).
• Verification of correct mixing of painting materials.
• Verification that primer coating materials is continuously agitated.
• Verification that “pot life” is not exceeded.
• Verification that coating is cured as specified in the painting material manufacturer’s instruction.
