In this link, you will find the Reading Passage and the Audio Item for the Integrated Essay. Review them
and take your notes. Program a chronometer for you and take 20 minutes to write down your essay
summarizing both items.
The reading extract leads off with the passage subscribing to the environmental pollution theory which
attributes the decline to the prevalence of industrial waste in the region. Nonetheless, in the lecture it
is said that predators are responsible for the decline instead. I will explain both of these perspectives
from now on:
Firstly, in the reading passage it is claimed that the environmental pollution hypothesis is right. This is
done with specific mention to chemically damaged water, the decline of other sea animals in the area
and the uneven pattern with which otters have disappeared. Nevertheless, in the listening
presentation it is noted that there is an alternative explanation which can produce the same results
that have been highlighted by the passage; that due to the decline of whales in the area, the orcas
have had to start hunting smaller animals like otters and seals instead.
Secondly, in the reading excerpt it is pointed out that other animals were harmed by the same causes
that had diminished the aforementioned mammals. The listening passage claims notwithstanding that
there may be several natural phenomena affecting species very much separately. Namely, it is said
there is no reasonable motive to postulate the same natural cause must affect all the ecosystem.
Finally, in the reading selection it is stated that the uneven pattern of decline can also be attributed to
the fact that orcas are large animals. This means that they cannot hunt effectively in shallow or rocky
waters which also happen to be the type of regions where sea otter populations have not declined. On
the other hand, in the presentation it is mentioned that these shallow areas are also the same exact
places where the otter population still remains relatively unchanged.
2. Independent Essay
For this essay, you must write down a personal response, in 30 minutes, about the following question:
Some people believe is better not to have children ever. Do you agree or disagree with them?
The rate of the human population growth on the planet has exponentially slowed down in this last
period of history, many people are deciding not to have children anymore, and honestly, I agree. H
aving children is a very serious matter because you have to be completely secure that you are going to
be able to provide whatever this kid is going to need. Likewise, being a parent is anything but an easy
task, there is no way to know if the way you are raising these children is the right or the correct form.
Accordingly, I believe is better not to have children. Below are the motives for this contention:
First, having a child is always a blessing some may say, but only if we could also be a blessing for this
child. We all know that in order to have a decent life there are some aspects like the economic
sufficiency of a family, that plays a very important role in the way a child is raised. For example, if the
family is not well established it is not going to be easy to provide the necessary environment for the
child to develop and grow in the best way possible. On top of that, his or her development could be
disadvantageous compared to the rest.
I remember having a very nice childhood, but I could not say the same about my nephew. He grew up
with a lot of needs because his father did not want to take care of him so he left him with his mother
and did not come back till years passed.
Furthermore, raising a child should be considered the most difficult job that a human being could ever
face. There is no way to know if what you are doing is the correct form to do it- There is no school or
university for parents, and you just have to wait and see how this turns out, but not even then you are
going to be able to certainly know if you did right because there are so many other factors that could
potentially influence in the way the child has developed and molded.
To conclude, the decision of having children is persona. But in any way must be taken easily because is
a life that is being put to the table, a life of someone that is not really there to give his or her opinion.
Therefore, we have to be mature and strong enough to decide. For me, it is a no for the moment, but if
I ever have the chance, I would prefer to adopt a child so I could give him the life that he deserves.
