WHEN CHRIST WAS

PREACHED TO CHRIST
(Luke 24:13-24)

Introduction: 1. There are many unusual scenes about preaching found in the Bible.
a. (Acts 20:7-10) Paul preaching till midnight.
b. (Acts 8) Philip and the eunuch.
c. (Ezekiel 37:1-7) Ezekiel preaching to dry bones.
2. But one of the strangest sermons was when Cleopas and another disciple
preached Christ to Christ.
3. Let us examine several facts about this sermon.

I. Facts About Cleopas And His Companion


A. They Thought Jesus Was A Stranger.
1. (Luke 24:18).
2. This obviously speaks well of the work of Jesus and his disciples.
3. How long could someone live in Glasgow without knowing about Jesus?
4. (Acts 8:4).
B. They Were Sad.
1. (Luke 24:17).
2. They were touched by the death of Jesus.
3. Can we still be touched by the death of Christ or is it “old news?”
C. They Walked And Preached.
1. (Luke 24:13-14).
2. We can preach almost anywhere, and should.
3. (John 9:4).
4. The church has at times been guilty of chaining Christ to the pulpit.

II. What Cleopas And His Companion Preached To Jesus


A. Things Concerning Jesus Of Nazareth.
1. (Luke 24:19).
2. (John 1:46) Can anything good come from Nazareth?
3. (Hebrews 8:12).
B. Jesus The Prophet.
1. (Luke 24:19).
2. (Deuteronomy 18:15; Acts 3:22-23).
3. (Hebrews 1:1-2).
C. Mighty In Deed.
1. (John 20:30-31).
2. Compare that with what you commonly see today.
D. Mighty In Word.
1. (Luke 24:19).
2. (John 7:45-46).
E. Chief Priests And Rulers Killed Jesus.
1. Being religious proves little - religious men killed Jesus.
2. (Matthew 15:8-9).
F. Preached His Crucifixion.
1. The cross is an amazing paradox.
a. Tragic yet wonderful.
b. Sad yet joyful.
c. Defeat yet Victory.
d. Foolishness yet God’s wisdom.

Conclusion: 1. What Cleopas and his companion preached must also be preached today.
2. If you were on the road to Emmaus, what would you have said?
3. About fifty days later, on the day of Pentecost, these same facts were
preaching and were accompanied with the plan of salvation (Acts 2:36-38).
