Script (Passion of Christ) : Scene 1 - PALM SUNDAY (Sisters House)
Two thousand years ago, a young man called Jesus of Nazareth walked around the land of Israel with a small band of
followers, teaching the people about the Kingdom of God and performing miracles of healing which amazed everyone.
His fame spread rapidly, and soon there were rumors circulating that he was the Messiah, or savior, for whom the country
had been waiting since the days of the prophets.
Jesus wasn’t popular with everyone. He criticized the ruling classes – the scribes and Pharisees, the priests and elders of the
land – for hypocrisy. They felt threatened by Jesus, and they hated him.
Our story begins when Jesus had been teaching for three years, and the time of the Jewish Passover feast was approaching.
He had decided to spend Passover in Jerusalem, much to the dismay of his disciples, since they knew he would be more vulnerable
there. Now Jesus is entering Jerusalem through the famous Golden Gate, accompanied by his disciples, and he is being greeted by
cheering crowds . . . .
Crowd: (various people shouting a mixture of things) “Hurrah!” “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he that comes in the
name of the Lord!” “Welcome Jesus!” (Flags or other symbols of welcome are waved)
Jesus: (Smiles, waves, and nods to the crowd (as do the disciples, slightly overcome by the welcome).
(Caiaphas and other priests are in a small group to the side, watching Jesus but saying nothing).
Caiaphas: (to the small group of priests around him) “That man has got to be stopped! We are losing the respect of the people!
There will be a riot soon, and we will have the Romans on our backs as well! Do you know what he did today?” (Tuan)
Caiaphas: “I asked him by whose authority he had done all that, but he wouldn’t say – he just asked me a question about that other
troublemaker, John the Baptist, trying to trick me. When I wouldn’t answer, neither would he.” (Tuan)
Priest 1: “He wouldn’t answer you, the High Priest? What an insult!” (Hans)
Priest 1: “Yes, and I heard him threatening to destroy our sacred temple – and then rebuild it in just three days! (Hans)
Caiaphas: “Locking up is no good – the people are on his side. No, we have to convict him of blasphemy against God, so that we can
have him executed. That’s the only way to stop this nonsense.” (Tuan)
Priest1: “But how do we arrest him? His followers will resist. (Hans)
Caiaphas: “Judas Iscariot! One of his own close band of renegades! How could you possibly help us?” (Tuan)
Judas: “I know where he goes at night, and I can lead you to him” (Ruel)
Caiaphas: “Why would you do that? Are’nt you one of his deciples?” (Tuan)
Judas: “What has belief got to do with it? This is a financial affair, if you get my meaning” (Ruel)
Caiaphas: (sneering) “Yes, I understand you perfectly. How much do you want?” (Tuan)
Judas: “Thirty silver pieces. I think he’s worth that much to you” (Caiaphas gets into a huddle with the other priests and produces a
bag of money) (Ruel)
Caiaphas: “Here you are. Thirty pieces of silver. Come and find me at the temple when an opportune moment arrives. But make it
soon, and don’t go back on this deal or there won’t be any hiding place for you in Israel” (Tuan)
(Judas nods and disappears, following Jesus and the others. The priests also exit)
Narrator: A week goes past uneventfully, and eventually Judas gets his chance. Jesus and his twelve disciples need a quiet room to
celebrate the first day of Passover, and Jesus tells them of a place which is willing to house them.
JESUS: Now, I must tell you something before it happens so you will believe in me when it does. It is written, “He who eats
with me has lifted his heel against me.” (Pause) I say now, in truth, one of you here with me shall betray me.
(On the following four lines, Andrew & Nathaniel stand and remain standing until Peter stands, Thad. & Simon remain seated)
THADDEUS: Or me?
SIMON: Is it me?
PETER: [stands and beckons to John] John, ask him who he means.
JESUS: (To JOHN, alone) It is the one I will give this piece of bread.
JESUS: You have said it. Now, quickly, do what you are set to do!
JESUS: (Blessing the bread) Blessed are You, Lord God, King of the World. Who has given this bread to eat. Take, each of you, and
eat all of it. This is my body, broken for you. (Blessing the cup) Blessed are You, Lord God, King of the World, our Father,
Who has giving THIS cup to drink. Take, all of you, and drink from it. It is the cup of the new covenant in my blood, poured
out for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you do this, remember me.
I will only be with you a little while longer, and where I am going, you cannot come. So, I give you this new command; love
one another as I have loved you. If you do this, everyone will know you are—my disciples.
JESUS: Peter, you cannot go with me now, but you will follow, later.
PETER: But why can’t I go now? I will lay down my own life for you.
JESUS: Would you, Peter? Truly, I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will have denied me three times. Do not let your heart be
troubled, Believe in God, and in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house, and I am going to prepare a place for you.
Then I will come back to take you to be with me. You already know the Way to where I am going.
THOMAS: Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how do we know the way?
JESUS: I Am the Way, the Truth, the Life. No one can come to the Father, unless they come through me.
JESUS: Philip, do you not know Me, after so long? He that sees Me, sees the Father. The Father lives in me and does His works.
Truly, anyone who believes in Me will do these same works and also greater works because I go to the Father.
Peace I leave with you; I give you My peace I have told you these things before they happen, so that when you see them, you will
believe, I cannot talk much longer with you. The prince of this world is coming, and he has nothing in me, but the world must be
shown that I obey and love the Father.
Narrator:
Following the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples walk out of the city to the Mount of Olives, and into the Garden of
Gethsemane. Jesus knows what is going to happen to him, and he is worried and afraid
Peter: “What’s the matter, Jesus? You look sad – that’s not like you”
Jesus: “Ah, my friend, this will be a hard night for me and for all of you. I will be betrayed into the hands of the priests,
and you will all desert me”
Peter: “Not me, Lord! I will never desert you. Even if I have to die for it I will stand by your side!”
Jesus: “Oh, Peter, Peter, so impetuous! But I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows in the morning, you will deny
three times that you know me!”
Peter: “No, no, not possible. I will never, never disown you” Other disciples: “Neither will I” “Not me – I’ll stay with you”
“We won’t leave you, Jesus” etc
Peter: “I’ve got a sword here. They’ll never take you while I am alive!”
John: “I’ve got one too. Jesus, do you think two swords is enough?”
Jesus: (wearily) “Yes, I’m sure that’s all we will need. But you need to pray earnestly that you won’t lose courage and fall
victims to temptation. Wait here, watch and pray while I go over there by myself for a while.” (Jesus moves off to the
side and kneels down.)
John: “What did he mean about being betrayed? Nobody knows we are here”
Peter: “Anyway, they’ve tried to get hold of him several times before and they haven’t succeeded. But I’ve never seen
him so worried and unhappy”
John: “I can’t make sense of it at all. ‘Watch and pray’ he said. But I’m so tired – it’s been a very long day. I think I’ll Just
rest for a while first” (lies down and immediately falls asleep)
Peter: “Good idea – I’m not sure what to pray for, anyway” (lies down and soon nods off) (the other disciples all relax
and fall asleep)
Jesus: “Oh, my Father, is there any way out of this terrible ordeal? I am afraid of what is going to happen.” (pauses with
his face in this hands) “But this is why I was sent, so not my will, but yours, be done.”
(Jesus comes back to his disciples and finds them all sleep) Music (solemn music)
Jesus: “Wake up! Is it too much to ask you to pray for a few minutes?
(the disciples sit up sheepishly, and Jesus goes off again to kneel where he was before)
(The disciples start on their knees, but shortly afterwards one by one fall asleep again) Music (solemn music)
Jesus: “Father, give me the strength to endure the suffering that is coming, if it is really your will that I should go through
with it”
(once again, puts his face into this hands and prays quietly)
(comes back and once again finds them sleeping) Music (solemn music)
Jesus: “Thomas! Andrew! Peter! Why are you not praying? Don’t you understand what is happening? The spirit is willing,
but the flesh is weak. Pray for strength to endure what is coming”
(Jesus goes off for the third time and prays again) Music (solemn music)
Peter: “Why is he so upset? It is quiet and lonely up here. Who is going to disturb us?”
John: “He often talks in riddles, and I don’t always understand. Maybe something is going to happen tomorrow.”
Peter: “Well, he told us to pray, so let’s do that. I wish I wasn’t so tired” (they kneel and start praying, but soon fall
asleep again) Jesus: “My Father, I now understand and fully accept that all this is according to your will. They are coming
for me now, and I will go with them” (goes back to the disciples, again finds them sleeping)
Narrator [JESUS rises from prayer to go sit next to PETER. The three are asleep,]
Jesus: “Wake up, all of you! This is no time for sleeping – my betrayer is close at hand!”
JESUS: (To the THREE) The hour has come; the Son of Man has been betrayed to sinful men. My betrayer is upon us. Let us go to
meet him. (they scramble to their feet as Judas, some soldiers and temple guards’ approach)
Judas: (to the soldiers and guards) “The one I greet with a kiss is Jesus. Seize him.”
Jesus: “Is that how you betray me, my friend, with a kiss?” (Judas falls back, while the soldiers grab Jesus.
PRIEST 2: (Coming up by JUDAS, who has moved back toward the bridge) Jesus of Nazareth.
JESUS: I am. I AM HE!
JESUS: (Stepping closer to them) Do you take me for a bandit that you have come with swords and cudgels to arrest me?
Narrator: Peter tugs out his sword and rushes towards one of the temple guards. The guard draw his own sword and
Jesus holds up his hand to stop them)
JESUS: No, Peter! You must let them have their way!
JESUS: Do you not think that I could appeal to my Father who would at once send to my aid more than 12 legions of angels.
JESUS: This is the cup my Father has given me. Shall I not drink it?
JESUS: But how shall the Scripture be fulfilled which say, “This must be.” If I am the man you want, set these others go!
PETER: Lord!
JESUS: Peter, this has all happened to fulfill what the prophets wrote.
SANHEDRIN GUARD: We have orders to arrest you and take you to the high priest. Will you come peacefully?
JESUS: Yes. This is you moment, the hour when darkness reigns. Music (Intense music)
Scene 3 – CAIAPHAS’S HOUSE (Sisters Retreat House)
Narrator: The soldiers are taking Jesus to the house of Caiaphas, the High Priest, where he will be tried for blasphemy.
(Judas is with the group of soldiers, keeping well away from Jesus. Peter and a couple of other disciples follow at a safe
distance.)
Narrator: Here we are, at the house of Caiaphas, the High Priest, the most important religious leader in Israel. The house
is very big and grand, as befits Caiaphas’s status, and the household includes many servants, both inside and in the
courtyard surrounding it. At last Caiaphas has Jesus where he wants him – captured, bound and on his own.
Accompanied by the Scribes and the Elders, he can now interrogate Jesus and prove that he is a blasphemer. Caiaphas
has also engaged the services of several people who have been paid to give evidence against Jesus.
(Peter has followed Jesus at a distance, and is now waiting anxiously to see what will happen. Judas is also there,
hovering in the background. As Jesus’s trial before Caiaphas begins, Judas is beginning to realize just what he has done . .
.)
Caiaphas: (to Jesus) “You are accused of blasphemy against God. How do you plead?” (Jesus says nothing, and ignores
him) (Tuan)
Caiaphas: “What, nothing to say now, eh? You had plenty to say when you had the rabble around you, eating out of your
hand. Never mind, we have witnesses to your words and actions, and they will speak for you” (to a maidservant) “Girl,
go out and fetch the first witnesses” (the maidservant goes to the outer area to fetch the witnesses, but pauses when
she sees Peter by the fire) (Tuan)
Maidservant: “Hey, don’t I recognise you? You go around with that Jesus from Galilee, don’t you?”
Peter: (jumping up) “Who is he? I don’t know what you are talking about (Herald)
Maidservant: I know you are one of his followers, you even speak like a Galilean. Why not admit it? “I’ve seen you with
him. When he came to the city last week and all the crowds cheered for him, you were there as well”
Peter: (now scared and looking around him) “You’re wrong! I tell you again, I don’t know the man. Why don’t you
believe me?” (Peter leaves the fire and moves out further) Rooster Crows (The maidservant looks even more puzzled,
but gives up and goes back into the courtyard again.) (Herald)
Caiaphas: (to one of the witnesses) “Tell us what this man said and did. Have you seen him breaking our laws? (Tuan)
Witness 1: “Oh, yes, your honour, he walks about on the Sabbath and he claims that we shouldn’t pay taxes to the
Emperor”
Witness 2: “He said he was going to knock the Temple down, and then rebuild it in three days”
Caiaphas: (waving the witnesses away and addressing Jesus) “Do you still have nothing to say in your defence? Can’t you
hear the charges they are bringing against you?” (Tuan)
Caiaphas: (losing his temper when Jesus still won’t answer) “Say something! I put you under oath to the living God to tell
us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God!” (Tuan)
Jesus: (calmly)”Yes, I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of
heaven
Caiaphas: (with a triumphant horror) “Blasphemy! You have all heard it for yourselves! What do you think?” (Tuan)
(Judas sees that Jesus is condemned and felt dismay. He starts walking towards Caiaphas)
Narrator; (Caiaphas turns and walks towards Judas, not happy to see him there)
Caiaphas: “What do you want? You’ve done your job and been paid. Be off with you!” (Tuan)
Caiaphas: (sneering) “What is that to us? As you said, it was just a financial affair as far as you were concerned” (Tuan)
Judas: “Please take back your money. Let him go free, he has done nothing wrong” (Ruel)
Caiaphas: “Get out of here before I have you arrested as well” (Tuan)
Narrator; (Judas gets up, throws the bag of money at Caiaphas’s feet and stumbles out. Caiaphas picks up the money,
shakes the bag to feel the weight, and puts it in his pocket)
Narrator: Caiaphas has got what he wants, but Israel is an occupied land, and he has no power to put people to death.
He now has to persuade the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, to agree that Jesus should die. Caiaphas and his retinue
take Jesus down to Pilate’s court, and it is now Pilate’s turn to question him . . .
PILATE: The words are mine. Yes, indeed they are. What an extraordinary reply. What charge do you bring against him? (OJ)
PRIEST 1: We believe He is a danger to the peace of Rome as well as our own nation. (Tuan)
PRIEST 2: His followers are encouraged against Rome in matters of taxes and rule. (Hans)
PRIEST 1: His crimes are worthy of death by our Law and by Rome’s. (Joseph)
PILATE: DEATH? You wish to put this man to death over those matters you’ve accounted? (OJ)
PRIEST 2: That is our desire, his teaching has caused discontentment among the people all through Judea. It started in Galilee and
has spread as far as this city. (Joseph)
Narrator: Once Pilate heard the word Galilee, he immediately remembers that Herod is here in Jerusalem at this very time.
PILATE: Is this man then a Galilean? Then man is under Herod’s jurisdiction (OJ)
PILATE: Herod is here in Jerusalem at this very time. Take him to Herod. Do not trouble me further. I have no time for such
foolishness.
Narrator: The Crowd followed Jesus as they marched towards Herod’s house.
Music (intense music)
HEROD: What is this? What do we see here? Do we see John the Baptist here? look this is John the Baptist. He is risen from the
dead.
[LAUGHTER]
HEROD: Silence! No one must speak. We must examine this man more closely. Are you John come back from the grave to haunt us?
No, this is not John, we know that. This is the man called Jesus.
Thank you for bringing him to meet us. We are greatly pleased to meet him at long last.
So, you are Jesus of Nazareth. We hear that you perform miracles…that you heal the sick and the lame. Make the blind see. The
deaf hear. The dead live again!
[LAUGHTER]
Is all of this true? As you are a Galilean and our jurisdiction, we are indeed very interested in seeing such miracles performed in our
presence.
HEROD: You see we are not alone in our curiosity. So, perform for us! Entertain us with your miracles.
HEROD: Well, then bring it to us. Set it there in front of him. Now, step back!
Narrator: As Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate for his final Judgement. Pilate was able to talk to Jesus in Private, upon their
conversation, Pilate found no reason for this to be sentenced to death. Pilate was also aware that The Priest wanted to kill Jesus out
of envy from his Fame and teaching . And so, JESUS is brought out and stands on top of the porch. CROWD sounds begin to
rise. PILATE comes out onto the porch raises his hand & CROWD quiets.]
PILATE: This man, Jesus, has been brought to me by your own chief priests and charged with rebellion against the authority of
Rome. I have questioned Him and found no grounds for the charges against Him certainly nothing worthy of death. As is
custom at this feast, I will release Him to you. (OJ)
PRIEST/CROWD VOICE: If you want to release someone, then give us Barabbas! (Tuan, Hans, Joseph)
PILATE: Barabbas? Would you have me release a murderer into you.
Narrator: Barabbas is brought forth in front of the crown. And the crowd cheer’s louder for Barabbas
PILATE: Then, if I release Barabbas, who stands condemned, I will also release Jesus, condemned! (OJ)
CROWD: (Various cries,) “No!” “He must not be released!” Etc.
PRIEST 1 : (Stepping forward & silencing the CROWD) By our Law, He has committed blasphemy by claiming to be the Son of
God. And, according to our Law, He must be put to death! (Tuan)
Narrator: The crowd murmurs (He is not our God, Blasphemy, He deserves death)
PILATE: (To JESUS) Look at this man! He is a thief! A murderer! Now which would you have me release to you? Barabbas? Or Jesus
called Messiah?
CROWD VOICE: Release Barabbas (Voices rise crying out for BARABBAS.)
Narrator: And so, Barabbas was released to the people (and the people cheered for Barabbas as he was released to them)
Pilate does not want Jesus to be condemned to death so he ordered his Guards to scorched Jesus, thinking that it is enough
punishment to convince the people to spare his life.
(Roman laughter)
ROMAN 2: I’d like to hear him speak after I get through with him (mocking).
[Roman laughter]
Narrator: The ROMAN SOLDIERS gather around JESUS and mock Him, placing the crown of thorns on His head, a reed in
His hand and a robe on Him, hailing Him as King and bowing. JESUS is brought to the bottom of Pilate’s steps.
PILATE: Enough! Behold your king!! He has been flogged, beaten, ridiculed, spit upon. What more can you want! (OJ)
A large crowd followed the march to calvary including the women who had earnest regard to Jesus. It is really painful watching an
innocent man, sent to redeem us is now being tortured to death. A man who has done nothing wrong, chose to speak the truth, and
taught the people to open their eyes against the real condemnation of the Priest can’t barely walk.
On this very moment, Mother Mary together with John and Mary Magdalene are just waiting for an opportune moment to get
closer and Jesus. (and so, it happened when Jesus falls for the very first time)
Narrator: Jesus falls for the second time, this time a woman name Veronica approach Jesus and wipes the blood on his face. The
face of Jesus was marked on the cloth just before the guards tell the woman to get off.
Narrator: Half way to calvary, Jesus due to blood loss he suffered from scorching is now exhausted and can’t seem to move another
step. So, the guards look for someone to help Jesus carry the cross on the way to calvary. (Guards will force Simon to carry the
cross.) Simon of Cyrene, left his two children and immediately help Jesus carrying the cross. The guards continue hitting and kicking
Jesus as they move forward.
Narrator: On the next alley Jesus met the Women of Jerusalem weeping for his sentence. Jesus looked at them and said.
JESUS: Daughters of Jerusalem! Do not weep for me. No, weep for yourselves and your children, for the days are surely
coming, when they will start saying to the mountains: Fall on us. And to the hills, cover us. And if these things are
done when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?
Scene 9 – Crucifixion ()
Narrator: Jesus together with the two thieves have reached the Calvary, the place of their crucifixion. The guards
divided the garments of Jesus
ROMAN 1: Let’s divide these things!
Narrator: After they divided the garments of Jesus, they now proceed on nailing Jesus on the Cross.
(Suspense music)
Narrator: Jesus now is crucified with the thieves. The crowd in front of together with the High Priest still persist on
mocking him
PRIEST 1: You said you were The Son of God; if You are, come down from the cross! (Tuan)
PRIEST 2: Are You our King? Come down from there and we will believe! (Joseph)
GASTAS: Are You our Messiah? Then save yourself...and us! (Harry)
DYSMAS: Have you no fear of God? You are under the same sentence as He, for it is plain justice. We are paying the price for our
misdeeds, but this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, remember me when you come to your thrown! (Quan)
JESUS: I tell you the truth. Today, you will be with me in Paradise.
Narrator: Suddenly the sky is filled with dark clouds, looking like a storm approaching towards them. The surroundings
were filled with despair and cold winds blow the area, making the High priest leave the area at once.
MOTHER MARY & JOHN approach when the PRIESTS left, the soldiers lets them go to the cross, MOTHER MARY touches
JESUS as she kneels, weeping. Jesus says to Mary.
JESUS: (With a loud voice) My GOD! My GOD! Why have You forsaken Me?
Narrator: MARY MAG turns to the Guard who offers drink to JESUS. After Drinking (with a load voice) Jesus said.
Narrator: The sky rumbles and a massive earthquake hit the ground, making the soldiers react in panic and order the
other Guards to check if Jesus and the Thieves are dead.
LONGINUS: This was indeed a sign. Truly, he was the Son of God.
Narrator: The Massive earthquake damaged the temple causing it be torn into two from top to bottom. Sanhedrin was
filled with fear and tremble for what they have done.
The moment people left the Calvary Mary together with the other Apostles approaches to get the body of Christ.
Music…
Reflection;
God’s love for man led Him to the cross. For many, this is impossible to grasp. However, God redeemed man
by the cross, through which He tells him the entire history of His love for him. God, who is the Father, wished
so much to save man for Himself that He gave away as ransom His only Son. As a defenseless infant He
delivered Him to the world, so that abandoned and defenseless He would be cruelly tortured, tormented and
murdered. Jesus, although He was God from the beginning, free from pain and suffering, dutifully accepted a
body capable of suffering. He did not hate man for what the Father commanded to Him, He did not envy him
this love of the Father, which calls man to paradise, and sent Him to the cross. Jesus, hanging on the cross,
confesses love to man. His tortured lips say: “Come, I am your brother, drink My blood, eat Me, and you will
become God through Me and in Me. In My tortured Body, I will carry your soul to paradise.”
