AUTOMATIC RESET FOR

GROUND PROTECTIVE RELAY

Electro-Motiile is now offering three versions of

an automatic ground protective relay reset. All
three devices have been made available as a
locomotive extra to reduce delays or interrup-
tions in locomotive operation.

The first device, Fig. 1, in its latest design, has a

6 to 10 second time delay before resetting the
ground relay. The lockout of the ground relay is
based on timing the number of grounds in a 12
minute interval. If four grounds occur within this
] ~ finute interva, the device will lock out the
ground relay. Once locked out, the device can
be reset only by the activation of an external
switch or button. This lockout feature is neces-
sary to prevent serious darmige should severe
grounds occur in rapid succession. If repetitive
grounds do not occur within the 12 minute cycle,
the device’s memory circuit will automatically 17672
erase the preceding grounds and reset to zero.

Also incorporated in this thkd design is the

totalizer which keeps track of the number of
resets and can be checked at the end of each
locomotive run to determine if there have been
repetitive grounds.

The third design, Fig. 3, is a more sophisticated

version containing a 35 minute memory cycle. On
the fourth ground this device initiates a voltage
limit by recalibrating a voltage limiting device in
the locomotive circuitry which limits generator
excitation. Chances of a subsequent ground are
much less likely - and the locomotive is still
operative. 7‘“ Totalizer
