Retraction of Rizal
Retraction of Rizal
Retraction of Rizal
Rizal's death generated a deluge of controversy, including allegations of retraction of his words
and deeds. Rizal was such a formidable foe, it was utter deception, and that they went to the extent of
fabricating his retraction after his death in order to completely annihilate Jose Rizal's future influence.
Even if they succeeded in executing him, his words and influence through his published books would
linger, hence they needed to fully silence him by fabricating his retraction.
In the morning after his death, the newspapers of Manila and Madrid recorded the event,
and announced that on the eve of his death Rizal retracted his religious errors, abjured freemasonry, and
married Josephine Bracken in his last hours. Although there were a lot of witnesses, when Rizal wrote
and signed his supposed retraction. There were 11 eyewitnesses, Rizal's great grandnephew, 12
historians and writers. Some supporters have seen this retraction as Rizal's moral courage to recognize
his mistakes Those who believed legitimacy over the retraction believed that Rizal wrote the retraction for
the sake of protection for his family, however despite all of this his retraction contradicts his character and
mature beliefs even the closest among Rizal upon hearing the retraction immediately concluded this as a
fraud. Even Rizal knew that fraudulence may occur even after his death.
Rizal, in my perspective, is quite consistent in what he believes. His letterings about the Spanish
friars do not make him a horrible person because he is only expressing what he observes. What he's
actually trying to say is that religion isn't evil in and of itself, but that it's being manipulated by evil people.
As I learned in ninth grade, the cover page of the book Noli Me Tangere has a lot of implications, one of
which is a drawing of a friar with hairy legs symbolizing the legend of the wolf, which means hiding their
true nature, with the shoe in it symbolizing the wealth of friars in teaching Catholicism, this leads me to
believe that his thought, in the first place, does not contradict religion, but rather the individuals who
abuse it.
Something I'm curious about is why he only married Josephine Bracken near the end of his life.
Why would he retract his statements, and if he could have done so earlier. Why would Rizal retract when
he knows he would still be killed even if he signs the retraction paper? Why didn't he? Even after his
purported retraction, Rizal was never properly buried. Even Josephine Bracken's penmanship was also
forged because there were evidences showing the differences of the document and Josephine's letters to
Rizal. Some of those who claimed the retraction was authentic were not even present at the event. Jose
Rizal's writings laid the foundation for our independence and inspired a sense of patriotism in the hearts
of Filipinos. Even now, his alleged retraction is inadequate to discredit his contributions to the nation.
Whatever more research reveals about the reality behind Rizal's retraction issue, it will do nothing to
diminish his legacy as a Filipino.
