    QR Codes: Explained

    QR codes, or Quick-Response codes, are easily readable barcodes that when scanned
    with a QR decoder (usually available on smartphones) can translate the code into a URL, a
    telephone number, a bit of text, or other data.

    Generating QR Codes
    To generate a specific QR code, there are plenty of free programs online that take your
    data and turn it into a custom-sized code to put on a flyer, a website, a business card, and
    so on. Kaywa, GoQR.me, and ZXing Project are among the easiest to use.

    Where to use QR Codes


    QR Codes are most effective by supplying additional information after grabbing people’s
    attention (in flyers or advertisements). For example, if the Student Health Center hung up
    flyers in Bobst with information on flu prevention, they could include a QR code at the
    bottom to link to their website for more information; the Wellness Exchange could include
    a QR code that when scanned would bring up the 9999 number on your cell phone; or,
    the Student Resource Center could create one that connects to [email protected].

    Other clever uses might be putting a collage of QR codes in the Kimmel elevators with no
    explanation of what the code leads to, thus encouraging students to scan the random
    codes to learn more about the offices in the building (each code would link to a different
    office’s website). Or, during Welcome Week, temporary tattoos with QR codes could be
    handed out to students to promote services that could all link to one specific page or a
    random one.

    QR Code Apps
    The best QR code decoder apps for smartphones are QR Droid (for Android Devices),
    Optiscan (for iPhone/iOS), and QR Code Scanner (for Blackberry). If without a
    smartphone, you can snap a photo of the QR code and text it to 43588 (via a company
    called Scan Life). To download the aforementioned apps, simply open the app store on
    your smartphone and type in QR Code Reader to find any relevant app.

    QR Design
    QR codes are extremely customizable, so there are a lot of ways to be creative while also
    using these elegant codes. Here are a few examples:
