Ⅰ. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

▣ Program Title: KOICA-KNU Master’s Degree Program in Agricultural Engineering

▣ Duration

1) Stay duration: August 17, 2023 – December 20, 2024 (17 months)

2) Academic duration: September 1, 2023 – February 14, 2025 (19 months)

* During 17 months in KNU, students are strongly recommended to complete every


required academic and graduation requirement. In accordance to the university
regulations, the diploma will be issued in February 14, 2025.

▣ Degree: Master of Science

▣ Objectives

1) To train public officials to become the changing agents for development who can
contribute to the agricultural engineering development of their country, region and the
global society as a whole

2) To share Korean experiences of economic and social development and provide


practical knowledge of agricultural production technology, and good agricultural
practices that accelerated Korea’s growth

3) To strengthen the strategic partnership with developing countries for future


collaboration in the agricultural engineering sector

<A two-track approach of an application process>
- For KOICA documents;
∙ KOICA documents (KOICA application form) should be sent to the regional KOICA office or the
relevant government office
∙ an original copy should be sent to the regional KOICA office or the relevant government office

with the sealed envelope for your privacy protection.

- For university documents;


∙ a scanned copy should be sent to University (via an official university email)

∙ an original copy should be sent to the regional KOICA office or the relevant government office

with the sealed envelop for your privacy protection till the end of local medical checkup. (After

the medical checkup, an original copy should be handed in to the university directly by the
applicant.

4) Graduation Requirements
- In order to graduate, students must complete 24 credits, earn a GPA higher than
4.2, and pass the Korean Language Test held during the first winter break.
- Students should submit their degree thesis within a specified period and pass with
the approval of the review committee members.

3. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (TENTATIVE)
- Study visit, field trip and internship program are offered to improve the knowledge and learning
from basic and advanced courses to the work-site applicable level. Furthermore, forum,
conference and seminar are offered to promote knowledge and understanding of matters relating
to agricultural engineering.

2) Forum, Conference and Special Lecture (all-year-round)


- The KOICA-KNU Master’s Degree Program offers various academic forum, conference and
special lectures for students all-year-round. All students are free to join the events on their
choice and gain real experience in an area of agriculture. Such events will help students get the
information on new development trend and on how to build the strong partnerships with South
Korea in order to reduce poverty and increase economic growth in developing countries.

3) Internship Program
- During winter and summer vacation, Internship Programs will be offered in government agencies

4) International Cultural Events

- KNU-KOICA Scholarship Program offers annual International Cultural Events to celebrate


global diversity and enjoy a showcase of international artistic talents. All Korean and KOICA-KNU
Master’s Degree Program students share food, music, and dance, presenting the traditions and
history of their home countries. These cultural events are a great melting pot for culture and
knowledge.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
1) KNU’s Educational Goal

Graduate School of KNU was established in October 20, 1953, since twhen its objectives have been to explore

2. ACCOMMODATION
1) KNU On-campus Dormitory

- The rooms are designed for a single person. (Room per person)
- The room includes a bed, a desk, a chair, a bookshelf, a wardrobe.
- Communal area includes a bathroom, a kitchen, a laundry room, a lounge.
- Personal items, including bedding sets (such as blankets and pillows), are NOT provided.
- Possessing or using any of the electric heating appliances is prohibited.
- English-speaking staff available at the dormitory.
- Free Wi-Fi is available across the campus of KNU for currently enrolled students.

- A prayer room is prepared for students from Arab cultures in terms of religious equity and cultural
diversity.

6) General Student Services

KNU offers the Buddy Program to promote interaction and friendship between
international students and Korean students. The program matches international
KNU Buddy students and Korean students on a one-to-one basis. Through this exchange, KNU hopes
to provide international students with the opportunity not only to receive guidance and
support in adjusting to Korean community but also to make Korean friends.

During preparatory session and two regular semester, Korean class will be offered for
Korean Class students to learn Korean for living.

KOICA-KNU Scholarship Program offers the Mentor Program to assist students to adjust
into to their new environment at KNU and Korea. The mentor is a member of KOICA-KNU
Mentoring Scholarship Program Alumni. He/She will be responsible for helping students to cope
with cultural and academic issues.

KOICA-KNU Scholarship Program offers Home Visiting Program to provide an


opportunity for students to understand Korean culture and develop friendship and

Ⅴ. ACADEMIC REGULATIONS
1. KNU Academic Regulations for Graduate Student Reward and Punishment
Article 5 (Disciplinary Action) Anyone found in violation of any of the Rules and Regulations set
forth by KNU shall be subject to disciplinary action by the president of KNU.

① Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.)

② Intentionally disrupting lectures

③ Violation of any school regulations

Article 6 (Types of Disciplinary Action) Depending on the severity of the violation, disciplinary
action shall be carried out incrementally from warning to probation, suspension and expulsion.

① Probation shall range from one week to one month.

② The duration for a finite suspension will range from one week to one month.

③ The duration for an indefinite suspension will be more than one month.

④ KNU shall order at least 20 hours up to 60 hours of community service but it cannot
exceed one month.

Admissions, Classes and Years of Study

Article 70 (Classes) General and Professional graduate program classes are held during regular
daytime hours.

Article 71 (Years of Study)

① The length of time required for post-graduate degrees at KNU is set at two years for the
Master’s course, two years for the Doctoral degree and four years for the combined Master’s
and Doctorate course, respectively.

② In cases where a student’s previously acquired credits satisfy the required course credits,
and their GPA is over four point two (4.2), the course length can be reduced by six months
in the case of a Master’s or PhD program, and one year in the case of a combined
Master’s/PhD program.

Completion and Awarding of a Degree

Article 73 (Required Credits) Students must earn at least 24 credits for a Master’s degree.

Article 74 (Credits Taken as Prerequisites) Credits earned for prerequisite courses (such as
Korean Language course) are not added to the required MA or PhD program credits.

Article 78 (Graduation with Honors) Refer to KNU’s Rules for Graduation with Honors.

2. Sexual Violence & Misconduct Prevention
• Sexual Violence Prevention
- KNU is doing its utmost to educate students regarding harassment. One of those lessons pertains to
sexual harassment or violence. For this issue, the school is taking several actions, which include
creating guidelines and beginning an offline special lecture.

- In Korean law, sexual violence refers to cases of rape or indecent act by compulsion (sexual actions
accompanied by physical violence or threats). Recently, there have been cases in which sexual actions
committed while ignoring other party’s wishes have also been judged to constitute rape or indecent act
by compulsion, even when the action is not accompanied by physical violence.

3. Attendance and Absenteeism


Students are expected to attend all of the classes they have registered for each semester. Any student
who, without good reason, has failed to attend class for at least two-thirds of the total class hours shall
be prohibited from sitting for the exam.
(1) In the event a student is absent for any of the reasons below, the student must notify the appropriate
department, faculty, and department chair and get approval in advance:
- Death of an immediate family member (parents, spouse and children) or equivalent circumstance
- Academic planning, field-trips, on-location training, etc.
- Participation in seminars or conferences (including international ones) as approved by the department
chair.
- Other events as approved by the department chair.

(2) In the event of illness or emergency situations, students who will be absent for less than seven days
(including holidays and weekend days) need to submit written notification of such absence to the
department chair. For absences longer than seven days, students must submit a written diagnosis by
a physician.

4. Must reside in dormitory


- Students must reside in dormitory.
- Living off-campus is not allowed in principle.

5. Must abide by residency regulations
- KNU dormitory has very strict dormitory regulations and all students must abide by them.
- A student who violates residency regulations will be evicted from the dormitory and they
must return to their country immediately.
- Rules and Guidelines for Dormitory Residents
• Visitors are not expected to allow quests to stay overnight.
• Members of the opposite gender should not enter each other’s rooms.
• Students must maintain and clean their room prior to check out.

• Kitchen use should end by midnight (12AM).

6. Examinations and Grade Evaluations

- Regular Exams: Mid-term (7th to 8th week of semester), Final (last two weeks of semester)
- Make-up Exams: In the event a student cannot sit for an exam due to military service, illness, or any
other emergency, the student must notify the faculty before the test date, and obtain the Department
Chair’s approval to sit for the exam at another time.

- Qualifications to Sit for an Exam


- Any student who, without good reason, has failed to attend class for at least two-thirds of the total

students need to provide a written explanation of their absence.

-Scholastic Performance Evaluation Method


- Scholastic performance will be based on a 100-point scale for each course registered. Grades will be

7. Others
1) Withdrawals
- A participant may withdraw from the Program with valid personal reasons or otherwise (such as health
or work issues) when acceptable to KOICA.

2) Temporary Leave
- A participant can have a temporary leave during the school vacation (to his/her home country or for a
trip abroad) on the condition that the trip does not affect his/her schoolwork and as long as he/her
notifies the KNU in advance.
- KNU and KOICA do not pay airfare for the trip and his/her living allowance will be suspended from the
day of departure to the day of return during a temporary leave.
- If the a participants is found to have made an unreported temporary visit to his or her home country or
traveled to other countries or made a trip despite the university’s disapproval, he or she may be
suspended from the KOICA scholarship.

3) Accompanying or Inviting Family members


- As the Master’s program is a very intensive course, requiring full commitment and concentrated effort
for study, participants cannot bring any family members in Korea.

Ⅵ. PRECAUTIONS

⚫ In principle, even when the academic program is conducted online, participants must be
physically present in Korea to participate (cannot participate in the program online from home
country or outside Korea).

- Early Departure: Due to various circumstances such as no flights operating or border closures,
participants may be required to depart Korea before the program end date.

⚫ In such cases, part of the academic curriculum, thesis defense, or closing ceremony may be
conducted online.

- Living Costs: In principle, costs of living are provided per diem; that is, participants receive living
costs per diem based on the actual date of departure.

⚫ In case of early departure, living costs are received per diem based on the date of early
departure, and NOT the anticipated departure date or program end date

- COVID-19 Test Fees: The costs of COVID-19 testing required by quarantine regulations during the
departure and arrival process are first incurred by the participant and later reimbursed via the
Settlement Allowance and Scholarship Completion Grants.

- Adherence to Entry/Departure Guidelines: Any additional costs occurring due to the participant’s
failure to adhere to the entry/departure guidelines are the participant’s own responsibility.

⚫ Example) If the participant fails to provide a COVID-19 PCR test certificate on the date of arrival,
or is delayed in arriving at the airport and fails to board the flight, any additional costs occurring
thereof (flight change fees, etc.) is to be paid by the participant.

- Vaccination requirements: Participants are to individually check with the training institute on
whether vaccination is required and prepare accordingly; any disadvantages following are the
participant’s own responsibility.

⚫ Example) If the participant fails to provide a proof of a WHO-certified vaccination and cannot
check into the university dormitory, the participant will be responsible to find accommodation for
him/herself (accommodation fees are supported in the amount corresponding to the dormitory
fees).

- Check-in to Dormitory: In principle, dormitory check-in is required of program participants.

- Religious meals & personal food preferences: Religious meals and personal food preferences
are not provided during the scholarship program nor the self-quarantine period following entry to
Korea. For further information, check the university guidelines (if necessary, personal fees may be
incurred)

- Regulatory Compliance: KOICA SP participants should observe KOICA CIAT Fellows’


Guidebook and University internal rules and regulations, otherwise the participant would
lose one’s status as SP participants and a university student.
