Social media are online platforms that allow users to create and share content, participate in social networking, and engage with people who have similar interests. Key aspects include facilitating interaction and connectivity through virtual communities. Popular social media apps include YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Discord and Twitch, each with different primary functions for sharing videos, news, personal updates, or private/group conversations. While social media allows interaction, users should be aware of safety risks and how to customize privacy settings, report issues, and avoid oversharing personal information online.

Social media

Social media are interactive technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks.
The term social in regard to media suggests that platforms
are user-centric and enable communal activity. As such, social media can be viewed as online facilitators or enhancers of human networks—webs of individuals who enhance social connectivity.
Users usually access social media services through web-
based apps on desktops or download services that offer social media functionality to their mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets). As users engage with these electronic services, they create highly interactive platforms in which individuals, communities, and organizations can share, co-create, discuss, participate, and modify user-generated or self-curated content posted online.
Some of the most used social media apps are: YouTube,
Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Discord and Twitch.
YouTube, Twitch and TikTok are mostly used to upload and
watch video content but in different ways, for example: Twitch is only used for live streams, and TikTok is just used for shorts. Twitter is mostly used for sharing news, Facebook is mostly used to share your everyday-life, and Discord is used to talk with your friends either privately (with one of your friends) or publicly (with two or more of your friends).
People use the internet for a lot of reasons, and some
people have bad intentions, so you need to be careful of what you do on the internet, and here are some tips:
1_Know how to report, block, and filter content.
You must be aware of how to filter which users or content you see, report harmful comments or content, and block those who are attempting to use technology to harm others.
2_Personalize your privacy settings.
You can adjust your privacy settings to your comfort level, and select options that limit who can view your information.
3_Pause before you post.
Consider whether or not you are comfortable sharing this information with everyone who might see it. Content that contains personal information or your whereabouts could pose a safety risk. Social media apps can help you interact with others online using videos, photos and text messages, or just spend your free time there, even though there are a lot of negatives for using social media, they still form a huge part of our daily lives and are sometimes irreplaceable.
