1666?
There was no fire brigade
and the tools used to try to
stop fires did not work well.
Water squirts and leather
buckets full of water did not
do much to stop the fire.

Wooden fire engines had to be

filled up at the river and were
difficult to use. They needed
four people to work them.

After the Fire
What was London like straight after the fire?

In some areas after the fire,

the ground was so hot that it
took a few days before people
could walk there again.

At least 65,000 people

were left homeless.
Many lived in tents in
fields outside of London.
Around a third of the city
needed to be rebuilt.

How do you think people felt? What needed to change and why?
After the Fire
What did this declaration from 1666 say?

It had the details of King Charles II’s speechafter the fire. He said that he
wanted torebuild the city and make plans to stopa fire like that from
happening again.

King Charles II ordered changes to the way houses were built. What
were the changes?

Newer houses were made mainly

of brick and stone so they would
not catch fire as easily.
They were built further apart so it
was harder for fires to spread.
