II. Given manufacturer’s instructions on hardware troubleshooting. Provide the step-by-step procedure on
troubleshooting the listed computer problem below. Provide also the solution for the problem. (10 points
each) Refer to Attached Document.

1. The Power Supply Unit (PSU) has a loud fan noise.

 If the power supply still working and on, proceed to live screen test.
 Next, you will be asking if it is newly built
 If the unit is not newly built and does not need two tries to boot, then listen to the unit/computer
 Listen if the computer produces beep sound
 If yes, is there still a beep more than one?
 If none, is the unit/computer come to installed a new hardware?
 If none, does the unit/computer produce a loud fan noise from the power supply
 If yes, check the fan itself for the problem and free it from dust and dirt.

2. The Video adapter fails because the cable is damage and/or the pins
bent. Option 1
 Check the unit first if the powers come up. If no proceed to live screen test.
 After the test, check if the video adapter has no power. If there is no power displayed.
 Next, check if it displays no signal. If none – check if the video cable is secured.
 If the video cable is secured, check the cables and ensure that there is no damage and/or the pins bent.
 If the cable is damaged and/or the pins bent, look for a new cable connector for the Video
Adapter. Option 2
 Check the unit first if the powers come up. If no proceed to live screen test.
 If live screen does not display on the unit, check the LCD led indicator of power.
 If on and only one monitor, listen if the computer produces string of beeps.
 If none, check if the video cable is secured properly
 If secured properly, look for the damages and/or the pins bent on the cable
 If there is, replace or repair the damage cable connector
3. Motherboard error because of changed motherboard settings.

 If Live Screen Test is conducted – yes or no

 If yes, check the computer if it freezes during boot.
 If yes, check if it freezes on bare bones.
 If the computer freezes on bare bones, go to BIOS settings
 If the BIOS can’t be accessed, check if you changed any settings
 If none, check if the fan on the heatsink is active.
 If active, listen to the computer if it produces more than one beep
 If not, check the motherboard if it is in default settings.
 If the motherboard settings are changed, restore factory of the
motherboard for its default settings.

4. Can’t connect to local area network because of the newly installed network card.
 If there is any wired LAN, check for random problems
 If there are random problems, check the cable if it is wiggled or tangled
 If there is, ensure that the cable is within the physical layer limits
 If it is under physical layer limits, try using different port hub
 If the other port hub is already tried, now check if the connection fails on
traffic and/or number of users
 If the port hub where the connection is plugged does not fail on
traffic and/or number of users, check the network if it is flaky.
 If the network is not, follow the cable path and check if it is by passes to hub
fix.
 If the cable does not, re-check the unit if there is any new network card which
works
 If yes, but the new network card does not work, there is a possible software
conflict, failure of set-up or virus.

5. Sound failure because of built- in sound card.

 Is there any non-beep audio?
 If no, check if there is an output selected in OS
 If there is, check the HDMI sound to HDTV fails
 If does not fail, check the speakers if powered, on and with volume up.
 If everything is yes, run Windows Fix It.
 Then, Check if the OS is upgraded.
 If not, open device manager and check for register card.
 If there is none in the options, check if it has USB Sound.
 If none, run ‘Add hardware’ on the device manager.
 Next, check for built in mother board sound
 If there is, disable the motherboard sound in CMOS and install a sound card

6. PATA HDD can’t be detected because of failure of IDE ribbon cable.

 Ensure if there is BIOS Register Drive and check if it is SSD Drive
 If there is no BIOS Register Drive, and not SSD Drive check if the drive seeks
and spins up
 If the drive seeks and spins up, check for the drive if it is a SATA
 If not SATA, check if it is set for Master/Slave
 If it is set for that setting, check for the cables if seated and new.
 If yes, next is check the IDE Ribbon cable if keyed
 If the IDE Ribbon is keyed, replace its cable.
 If the BIOS still has no register drive, it is either the motherboard
controller or drive is bad or incompatible.
