Double Page Spread Analysis

Headline
The Headline is conventionally the largest text on both of the pages and indicates the purpose of the
article. The headline can often be a “pull quote” to intrigue the audience . The Headline is designed to
grab the audience's attention. It will often also anchor the meaning of the main image. On the Take a
Break double page spread the head line is in a very big font, this is because it will grab the reader's
attention instantly as it is the biggest text on the page , it also overlaps to the second page showing
that they are both joined together.

Main Image
The main image conventionally takes up one of two pages and may bleed across the centrefold. THe
main image may use direct address to engage the audience and the mise en scene will be visually
interesting and signify the content of the article. On the Take a Break double page spread, the main
image is on the top left of the page, it is the biggest image on the page and it sits above the first
paragraph of the article.

Stand First
Like an introduction, to the article and is either positioned under the headline or in the first paragraph
of the article conventionally smaller than the headline text but larger than the main body text. On the
Take a Break double page spread, the Stand First is next to the Main Image , on the right of the Main
image, and it is in a small font but not small enough for the reader to read.

By Line
Credits to the writer and/or photographer of the article usually positioned near the headline or the end
of the article. On the Take a Break Double Page Spread, there is By Line on all the images giving credits
to the people who took photos on the page.

Column Layout
Used to create structure and order to allow the audience to navigate around the page easily
conventionally three columns to a page. On the Take a Break Double Page Spread, the column layout is
neat and this helps the reader read the articles easier and also it attracts readers because it is in a
neat design, if there was no column layout on the Take a Break magazine the magazine would be messy
and hard to read also it will not attract readers.

Page Number and additional information at the bottom of the page


Small in the outer corners- page number and then sometimes the masthead, issue information. In the
Take A Break magazine, in the bottom left corner of the first page, it states the issue information, page
number and a small masthead.

Secondary image
These are any images that feature in the article in addition to the main image. Provides more visual
information for the audience. There are 4 secondary images on the 2nd page which all link to the
article, this helps the reader understand the article more by seeing visual information.
Pull quote
A quote from the article repeated in a larger font to grab the audience's attention and make them want
to read the article. Conventionally positioned in the middle of the column of the text, or on the main
image. The Pull Quote in the Take A Break magazine is in the middle column of the main body text, it is
also in a blue font and this catches the readers attention as it stands out from the rest of the text.

Drop cap
The first letter of the article, enlarged and dropping down into the main body text. The drop cap
indicates the beginning of the article. The drop cap in the Take A Break magazine is the same colour
blue as the background of the headline and the main image. There is a drop cap on this magazine which
therefore means it is conventional. The letter “M” is the colour blue which stands out on the whole
page.

Main Body Text


The body of the text that makes up the article is the main body text and is in the smaller font on the
page and usually a plain and simple style. The Main body text on the Take a Break Double Page Spread
is on both pages and is in a small font but not small enough to read, it is also distributed through
columns throughout the 2 pages, there are 8 columns that make the Main Body Text.
