GROUNDHOG DAY (1993)

ROLLING CLOUDS - TITLES

1. INT. TV STUDIO – DAY

PHIL stands in front of a blue screen, animatedly


gesturing while he presents that day’s weather forecast.
He moves into a seat and speaks alongside his colleague,
telling the audience about how it is Groundhog Day
tomorrow in the town of Punxsutawney, in a sarcastic
tone. RITA is seen fooling around in front of the blue
screen.

2. EXT. PITTSBURGH – DAY

Footage of Pittsburgh - the TV van drives under a bridge.

3. INT. TV VAN – DAY

Phil tells his cameraman LARRY about how he will no


longer be working with PBA. They discuss the Groundhog
Day and Phil expresses his distaste with the festival.

4. EXT. PUNXSUTAWNEY – DAY

The TV van drives past the Punxsutawney sign. They pull


into the hotel. Phil complains about the hotel.

5. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

The radio plays, and Phil wakes up and freshens up.

6. INT. BED AND BREAKFAST HALLWAY – DAY

Phil dismissively converses with a man who is very


excited about Groundhog Day.

7. INT. BREAKFAST ROOM – DAY

Phil dismissively speaks with MRS. CONNORS, and


gesticulates whilst talking about the weather.

8. EXT. STREET – DAY


Phil ignores a homeless man, and is accosted by an
enthusiastic and annoying NED RIERSON. He rudely brushes
him aside. He steps in a puddle.

9. EXT. GOBBLER’S GNOB – DAY

A cheerful crowd is gathered around the main area, and


Rita and Larry are standing with the equipment. They
begin recording, and Phil introduces the festival. Off
camera, he crassly describes the event. The groundhog’s
prediction is given, and the crowd boos. Phil
sarcastically speaks on camera.

10. EXT. PUNXSUTAWNEY EXIT – DAY

The road is blocked because of a blizzard. Phil leaves


the car without his coat, and argues with the an officer
in the cold.

11. INT. GAS STATION – DAY

Phil speaks on the phone with an unknown person, trying


to find a way back, and gets accidentally hit on the head
with a shovel.

12. INT. BAR – NIGHT

Phil rejects tells Rita that he will not attend the


Groundhog dinner, in a very sarcastic manner, and tells
her he will be taking a hot shower.

13. INT. PHIL’S BATHROOM – NIGHT

Phil attempts to take a shower but the water is cold.

14. INT. BED AND BREAKFAST HALLWAY – NIGHT

Phil leaves his room in his bathrobe. He meets the owner


and she tells him there wouldn’t be any hot water today.

15. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

The same song plays on the radio, and Phil wakes up and
freshens up, wondering why the same song is playing. He
looks outside the window and panics.

16. INT. BED AND BREAKFAST HALLWAY – DAY

Phil encounters the same man, and is bewildered. He


violently presses him against the wall and questions him.
17. INT. BREAKFAST ROOM – DAY

The owner speaks with Mrs. Connors, and he asks her


whether she has ever had déjà vu.

18. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil questions a passerby on where she is going, and then


asks her whether Groundhog Day is only once a year.

He passes by the same homeless man.

He bumps into Ned Rierson again, and says he isn’t


feeling well. He steps into the same puddle.

19. EXT. GOBBLERS KNOB – DAY

Phil enters the crowd, and asks Rita to slap him. He


expresses his worry to Rita, and they start recording.

20. INT. BATHROOM – DAY

He has a cold shower again.

21. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

He makes a call about the blizzard, before breaking a


pencil and keeping it on the table.

The same song plays on the radio, and Phil wakes up in


shock and panic. He notices that the pencil is intact.

22. INT. BED AND BREAKFAST HALLWAY – DAY

Phil encounters the same man, but he hurriedly walks past


him and rushes down the stairs. He rushes right past the
breakfast room.

23. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil pushes Ned Rierson out of the way, and ends up


stepping in the puddle again.

24. EXT. GOBBLERS GNOB – DAY

Phil tells Rita to meet him in the diner in a panicked


manner.

25. INT. DINER – DAY


Phil tells Rita about how he is reliving the day over and
over, and Rita finds it unbelievable. Larry arrives and
Phil tells them that he won’t be returning to Pittsburgh.

26. INT. DOCTOR’S OFFICE – DAY

THE DOCTOR informs Phil that there is nothing wrong with


him, and that he should see a psychiatrist.

27. INT. THERAPIST’S OFFICE – DAY

The therapist says he is unqualified to treat him, and


then says that they should meet again tomorrow.

28. INT. BOWLING ALLEY – NIGHT

Phil sits with two men, and they call him a glass half
empty kinda guy.

29. EXT. BOWLING ALLEY – NIGHT

Phil puts the men into the car and sits in the drivers
seat.

30. INT. CAR – NIGHT

The men tell Phil that he can do whatever he wants, and


Phil begins driving recklessly. The cops begin following
them, and a car chase ensues. Phil takes the car on the
railroad tracks, and they barely get missed getting hit
by a train. The cops catch him.

31. INT. POLICE STATION – NIGHT

Phil is put behind bars.

32. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

The same song plays on the radio, and Phil wakes up and
cheers and celebrates.

33. INT. BREAKFAST ROOM – DAY

Phil answers Mrs. Connors questions before she asks, and


kisses her before leaving.

34. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil punches Ned Rierson. He jumps over the puddle.

35. INT. DINER – DAY


Phil is eating a table full of food, and Rita is
disgusted. Rita quotes poetry, and Phil laughs at her.
Larry arrives, and he tells them that the town is growing
on him.

He begins talking to NANCY, and questions her about her


high school.

36. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

Phil wakes up.

37. EXT. GOBBLERS GNOB - DAY

Phil approaches Nancy and introduces himself as her old


classmate, and they make plans.

38. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – NIGHT

Phil and Nancy get intimate, and he accidentally calls


her by Rita’s name. When Nancy reacts, he proposes to
her.

39. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil predicts moves and steals from a bank van.

40. EXT. MOVIE CINEMA – NIGHT

Phil enters a movie theater dressed in costume.

42. EXT. TV VAN – DAY

Phil asks Rita out on a date.

43. INT. DINER – DAY

Rita describes her ideal man, and Phil insists he is all


of it.

44. INT. BAR – DAY

Phil buys Rita a drink, and notes her choice of favorite


drink.

Next day, Phil buys Rita a drink, and asks for her
favorite for herself, surprising him. He notes that she
drinks to world peace.

Next day, Phil drinks to world peace.

46. INT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT


Phil notes that Rita studied 19th Century French Poetry.

The next day, he recites French Poetry.

47. EXT. SNOWY STREET – NIGHT

Phil and Rita build a snowman, and then have a snowball


fight with some kids. They share an intimate moment, and
dance.

They walk back, and Rita goes back to Phil’s room.

48. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – NIGHT

Phil kisses Rita, and she tries to reject him, but he


persists. He forces himself on her, and he slaps her.

49. EXT. SNOWY STREET – NIGHT

Phil acts oddly with Rita.

50. MONTAGE OF RITA SLAPPING PHIL

51. EXT. STREET – NIGHT

Phil passes by several ice sculptures, a dejected look on


his face.

52. EXT. GOBBLERS GNOB – DAY

Rita asks Phil what is wrong.

53. INT. BED AND BREAKFAST LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

Phil predicts a reality show’s questions.

54. EXT. GOBBLERS GNOB – DAY

Phil speaks in a heavily negative tone.

55. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

Phil knocks the alarm clock off.

Phil breaks the alarm clock.

Phil throws the alarm clock.

56. EXT. GOBBLERS KNOB – DAY

Phil speaks oddly on camera, and Rita is worried about


Phil. Phil gets into the car with Groundhog Phil, and a
car chase ensues. He drives off a cliff, and the car
explodes.

57. INT. BREAKFAST ROOM – DAY

Phil comes down in his pajamas, and takes the toaster.

58. INT. BATHROOM – DAY

Phil kills himself by dropping the toaster into the


bathtub.

59. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil kills himself by standing in front of a bus.

60. EXT. BUILDING – DAY

Phil jumps off a building.

62. INT. DINER – DAY

Phil convinces Rita by predicting things about people and


the tray of dishes falling. He describes Rita, and then
predicts what Larry is going to say.

63. EXT. STREET – DAY

Rita says she will spend the day with Phil.

64. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

Rita and Phil play with cards, and they hug and begin to
wait till 6am. Rita falls asleep, and Phil admits his
feelings to her.

The next morning, he wakes up and Rita is missing, and it


is Groundhog day again.

65. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil gives the homeless man money.

66. EXT. GOBBLERS KBOB – DAY

He arrives with coffee and pastries for Larry and Rita.


He shows them a place from where they will get a better
shot.

67. INT. DINER – DAY

Phil sits, reading a book. He looks around and smiles.


68. EXT, HOUSE – DAY

Phil offers a piano teacher a thousand dollars for an


immediate piano lesson.

69. INT, BED AND BREAKFAST HALLWAY – DAY

Phil greets the same enthusiastically.

70. INT. PIANO TEACHER’S HOUSE – DAY

Phil plays the piano terribly.

71. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil carves an ice sculpture.

71. INT. PIANO TEACHER’S HOUSE - DAY

Phil plays the piano well.

72. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil greets Ned RIerson enthusiastically and he runs off.

73. EXT. STREET – NIGHT

Phil takes the old homeless man to the hospital.

74. INT. HOSPITAL – DAY

A nurse informs Phil that hr has died, and Phil is


shocked.

75. INT. DINER – DAY

Phil buys the old man a lot of food.

76. EXT. ALLEYWAY – DAY

Phil tries to resuscitate the dying homeless man.

77. EXT. GOBBLERS GNOB – DAY

Phil gives a long speech on winter, and surprises Larry


and Rita.

She asks him for coffee, and he says he has errands.

78. EXT. STREET – DAY

Phil saves a young boy who falls from a tree.


He helps out three older women with their flat tire.

79. INT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT

Phil saves a choking man, and lights a woman’s cigarette.

80. INT. BAR – NIGHT

Larry tries to flirt with a woman who is uninterested,


and they bump into Rita. The three of them head to the
party and find Phil playing the keyboard with the band.

81. INT. PARTY – NIGHT

Everyone cheers for Phil. Phil and Rita dance. People


continuously interrupt him and thank him, bewildering
Rita. The mayor announces that there will be an auction
for the eligible bachelors, and Rita buys Phil.

82. INT. BAR – NIGHT

They bump into Ned Rierson, and brush him aside.

83. EXT. SNOWY STREET – NIGHT

Phil carves an ice sculpture of Rita’s face. They share a


tender moment, and kiss.

84. INT. PHIL’S ROOM – DAY

Phil wakes up, with Rita with him, and he realizes that
the day has not repeated itself.

85. EXT. BED AND BREAKFAST – DAY

Phil tells Rita that they should live in this town.
