It’s like a fire, she said, ‘in the stove’. “You’re lying, you don’t remember!” cried the
children. But she remembered and stood quietly apart from all of them and watched the
patterning windows. And once, a month ago, she had refused to shower in the school shower
rooms, and clutched her hands to her ears and over her head, screaming the water mustn’t
tough her head.

schooled in the Nazi Youth movement, he didn’t believe in the Aryan-supremacy business
any more than I did. We laughed over the fact that he really took the part, though. An inch
taller than I, he had a lean, muscular frame, clear blue eyes, blond hair and a strikingly
handsome, chiselled face.

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)

Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,

And saw, within the moonlight in his room,

Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,


An angel writing in a book of gold: –
