USERS’ PREFERENCE TOWARDS G-PAY APP IN MADURAI CITY

Abstract:
Unified Payments Interface is created by the National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI) that
allows users to transfer or receive money in real-time. Unified Payments Interface eliminates details
such as like bank account number and IFSC code to transfer money from one account to the other.
G-pay (G-pay) is a digital wallet platform and online payment system developed by Google to
power in-application, online, and in-person contactless purchases on mobile devices, enabling users
to make payments with Android phones, tablets, or watches. The data were collected from 120 users
of G-pay app for the study. The analysis gives an understanding, about factors which can influence
the intensity of users’ preference towards G-pay application regarding speed of transaction,
perceived ease of use, security and customer service transaction.

INTRODUCTION
The digital wallet refers to a mobile technology that is used identical to a real wallet. It is a form of
an e-commerce model designed for the mobile devices for the convenience and ease of access. After
demonetization on November 8, 2016, India faced an increased use of various internet payment
systems for money transfer through electronic devices. The different modes of digital payments such
as debit/credit cards, internet banking, mobile wallets, digital payment apps, Unified Payments
Interface (UPI) service and so on show a drastic change in recent usage. Among different modes of
real wallet, G-pay is a digital wallet platform and online payment system developed by Google to
power in-app, online, and in-person contactless purchases on mobile devices, enabling users to make
payments with Android phones, tablets, or watches.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
People used to carry cash in their personal wallets for purchase before the invention of mobile
payments. In recent days’ people prefer to use digital wallets rather carrying cash. In the modern
days the awareness about the mobile payments and various payment apps are increasing among the
people. Previous studies are based on payment apps as whole. But the study on a specific payment
app is not adequate, so individual study on specific app is required understand the situation correctly
and identify the problems clearly. Hence the researcher has made this study primarily focuses on
analyzing the usage of G-Pay and to identify the influencing factors behind the usage of G-pay app.
OBJECTIVES
The following are the objectives of the study:
To ascertain the factors that influence users, to prefer G-Pay over other applications.
To assess the problems faced by the users of G-pay.
To offer suitable suggestions to the study.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Data are collected to the users of G-pay only in Madurai City. The research focuses on users of G-
pay in Madurai City alone and analyze the data in light of the above mentioned objectives of the
study.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The area of the study has been confined to only users from Madurai City. Primary and secondary
data has been collected. Simple random sampling method has been used for sample selection purpose
which covered 120 respondents who were surveyed through structured questionnaire. Respondents
include Students, Public Employees, Private Employees, Business people, Farmer and Homemaker.
The period of the study is one month. The statistical tool used for the analysis of data in this study

The ranks towards problems while using G-pay by the respondents are analysed by using Hendry
Garrett ranking technique. The result of the analysis is presented in table 5

CONCLUSION
The study was conducted to find out users’ preference towards G-pay application. G-pay is
facilitating mobile phone to be used as a main payment device for giving and accepting payments in
the easiest way. G-pay system permits money transfer between any two bank accounts by using a
mobile phone. It allows a customer to pay directly from a bank account to different merchants, both
online and offline, without the hassle of typing credit card details, IFSC code, or net banking/wallet
passwords. These features of G-pay motivates the respondents to prefer G-pay gradually in
upcoming future. Thus G-pay transaction aimed at helping in a less-cash society in India.
