Hiland Dairy School Milk Statement F3.28.23
The Hiland Dairy operation in Austin, Texas, was made aware that half pints of fat-free chocolate milk
delivered to the Elgin ISD had spoiled before the code date. Our primary concern is the health and safety
of the students and staff that consume our milk. Therefore, we immediately picked up all the affected
milk.
This product was produced by a co-packer partner and not at a Hiland manufacturing location. We
immediately contacted our co-packer, and following their internal investigation, they found an issue
with one of their half-pint carton-filling machines. They determined that the issue affected the quality of
the product, thus reducing the shelf-life, and immediately corrected it. We have been assured that they
have fixed the cause of the issue.
Hiland upholds strict standards when we process and package our milk, and we hold our copackers to
those same standards:
- All milk is processed as required by the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance.
- State Health Department regularly inspects all milk production facilities for compliance with the
Pasteurized Milk Ordinance regulation.
- All product goes through extensive sampling, microbial testing, and shelf-life evaluation.
- All milk is held and transported at 45 degrees Fahrenheit or less per the requirements of the
PMO. Therefore, the milk is typically stored and transported below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
- All deliveries are conducted in temperature-controlled vehicles.
As part of our corrective actions, we will review our co-packers ability to produce high-quality products
and adhere to effective communication procedures. We have yet to identify issues in cooling; however,
since milk stored above 45 degrees Fahrenheit will spoil prematurely, we will review the proper cold
chain procedures throughout the supply chain.
We value our school partners and know that the expectation is that our milk will be fresh when it is
served. We are working diligently with our co-packer, supply chain, and the schools to ensure this does
not occur again.
Sincerely,
Kathy Broniecki, APR
