Arc Fault Protection System NOLA-03-M (soft. ver. 1.06)

1. GENERAL
Independent arc fault protection relay NOLA-03-M is designed for the protection of low and middle
voltage switchgears. NOLA-03-M significantly reduces the risk of potential personal damage, and
material and production losses caused by arc fault. NOLA-03-M measures input current and light
intensity. The light reaches the optical sensor of the relay through the side surface of the optical fiber. If
the light signal is detected and the current exceeding the preset threshold, the device generates a control
signal in less than 2.5ms to immediately cut off the circuit-breaker.

NOLA-03-M can be used as an autonomous electric arc protection device or together with extension
modules connected via RS-485 or fiber-optic link. Extension modules allow constructing of a selective
optical arc protection system that trips only the defective feeder. NOLA-03-M notifies the extension
module(s) of current overload at the input. If the extension module simultaneously detects a light signal
(electric arc), the respective circuit breaker is immediately cut off.

Up to 16 NOLA-03-M relays can be deployed and interconnected via fiber-optic link. The overcurrent
signal is transmitted to the other(s) NOLA-03-M module(s).

NOLA-03-M responds only to rapid changes of light and automatically adjusts to the ambient
background lighting. The sensor fiber condition is monitored by sending a test pulse through the fiber.
If a test pulse is not received at regular intervals at the other end of the fiber loop, the failure signaling
relay is activated. Moreover, the signaling relay activates on loss of power or communication with the
extension modules.

NOLA-03-M can be used with current transformers rated for 1A or 5A.

2. INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF THE DEVICE

Fig. 2
The structural diagram of NOLA-03-M

2.1 Ambient light reaches NOLA-03-M via the optical sensors Fiber Sensor 1 and Fiber Sensor 2. If a
sudden increase of ambient light is detected for longer than 1 millisecond, the light overload signal
Light is generated and subsequently used for formation of the signal Trip. The system
automatically adjusts to the ambient background lighting and responds only to rapid changes of
light. The internal light source generates light signals of 200 µsec duration and 1sec period for
monitoring of fiber cable integrity. A fault signal is generated and the fault signaling output IRF is
activated, when detection of a monitoring light pulse fails or the ambient background lighting is
too intensive.

2.2 The inputs I1, I2 and I3 are intended for current measurements. When current in any of the inputs
exceeds the preset value for longer period than 1 msec, the current overload signal Current is
generated and subsequently used for formation of the signal Trip, or it may be forwarded to other
NOLA modules via RS-485 or an optical link.

2.3 The signal Trip activates the circuit breaker control outputs HSO-1 and HSO-2, the signaling
output TRIP, and the higher level breaker control contact TRIP DEL. Depending on the operating
mode of the circuit breaker protection module CBFP (Circuit Breaker Failure Protection), the
output HSO-2 can work together with the output HSO-1 or can be used for tripping of a higher
level circuit breaker.

- 3 - ELGA UAB
Arc Fault Protection System NOLA-03-M (soft. ver. 1.06)

Possible conditions for generating of Trip signal:

 Only on both excessive light and excessive current.

 Only on excessive light.

2.4 Communication links LINK M (MASTER) and LINK SL (SLAVE) are used for transmission of
current signal to other central units (MASTER) or extension (SLAVE) modules. The signal may be
transmitted via a twisted-pair cable or a fiber-optic cable. Communication links are constantly
monitored. At communication failure, a fault signal is generated and the fault signaling output IRF
is activated.

2.5 Purpose and designation of other inputs and outputs on the structural diagram are fully described in
Chapter 4.

3. CONTROL AND INDICATION ELEMENTS

The device is controlled and set up by means of 5 buttons on the front panel. Information on device

4.1. Connector X1

4.1.1. Terminals POWER (1, 2) are used for connection of a power source.

4.1.2. High speed semiconductor outputs HSO-1 and HSO-2 are intended for arc protection
tripping of circuit breakers. HSO-2 can be used to trip a higher level (according to power
supply) circuit breaker after elapse of the preset time, if tripping of lower level circuit
breakers has failed (CBFP function). Operation of the outputs is pulsed. Pulse duration is
0.8 sec. To protect the coil and the semiconductor terminal from current overload the circuit
breaker coil should be connected to HSO terminals via the interlocking terminal of the
circuit breaker.

Fig. 5

4.1.3. The relay output TRIP duplicates activation of HSO 1 (and HSO 2, is HSO 2 isn‘t allocated
for CBFP function) and is used for signaling of arc protection activation. The output is self-
locking. Use the RESET command to unlock it.

4.1.4. Logical input TRIP MON is used for confirmation of circuit breaker tripping, if enabled. If
a signal of the logical 1 level is not received over the preset time, the output TRIP DEL (and
the output HSO 2, if it is allocated for CBFP function) is activated.

4.1.5. Output TRIP DEL is used to disconnect higher level switchgear. TRIP DEL is triggered if
after TRIP instruction and the set delay time input TRIP MON receives no switchgear
disconnection confirmation signal.

4.1.6. Self-supervision relay output IRF is used for failure signaling:

4.1.6.1. Un-triggered state (contacts 11-12 are open, contacts 11-13 are closed) during normal
mode;

4.1.6.2. Triggered state (contacts 11-12 are closed, contacts 11-13 are open) if:
 Failure of light sensor or excessive background lighting is detected;
 Failure of either communication link LINK M or LINK SL is detected;
 3 instances of light signal without confirmation by current are received over a 3
day period (if the function is enabled);
 Power supply is lost;
 Internal failure is detected.

4.1.6.3. Failure is additionally signaled by a LED IRF, except in case of power loss.

4.1.6.4. Fault signaling persists until the fault is eliminated. The alarm is automatically cleared
after a fault is corrected, i.e., the relay output is reset to the un-triggered state and the LED
goes out.

7. CONNECTION OF EXTENSION UNITS

Up to 16 extension units can be connected to the NOLA-03-M central unit via a communication link.
An overcurrent signal is immediately transmitted from the NOLA-03-M central unit to the extension
modules via LINK SL (SLAVE) link. When two or more NOLA-03-M central units are used, the
overcurrent signal is transmitted to the other NOLA-03-M units via LINK M (MASTER) link. The
other units will rebroadcast the current signal to all connected extension modules.

Wiring diagram of main and extension units using RS-485 link

When a wired RS-485 communication link is used, attention to proper setting of the link loads should
be paid. An RS-485 line should be loaded at the outmost line points. Load resistors in NOLA-03-M
modules are activated by software (Ch 6.6.2.2). Load resistors in NOLA-04-S or NOLA-02-S modules
are activated by toggling the switch S1-2 to the ON position.

Addresses of all devices connected by a single line should be different. The address of a NOLA-04-S or
NOLA-02-S extension unit is set by the switch SL.ADDR (see description of NOLA-04-S or NOLA-
02-S). Additionally, the number of connected extension modules should be set on the NOLA-03-M

module (see Ch 6.6.2.1 and Ch 6.6.3.1). Addresses of NOLA-03-M modules connected into a single
system should be different as well (see Ch 6.5.2.1).
If more than two NOLA-03-M are used, all devices must be connected via fiber-optical communication
interface as shown below.

8. MOUNTING AND SETUP

8.1. Mounting

NOLA-03-M is designed for door mounting. The cut-out must be 211x161 mm. Some free space must
be left for installation of the optical cables.

8.2. Installation of optical sensors

Two types of optical sensors can be used: MSOG-XX (optical fiber loop) or SSO-XX (spot-type
sensor).

MSOG-XX SSO-XX

The optical fiber MSOG-XX is installed at 0.5m – 1m from a probable discharge source. The optical
fiber should be protected from mechanical damages during installation; its bending radius should not be
less than 5cm. To prevent false light signals the ends of an optical fiber loop should be insulated from
the background lighting with opaque black plastic pipe of 4.2mm to 5mm internal diameter and 1m to
1.5m length.

The sensor SSO-XX is mounted at 0.5 – 1.5 meter distance from the monitored bus or circuit breaker.
Avoid bending the optical fiber cable at right angles. One optical fiber (anyone) is connected to the
optical output of the corresponding channel (blue connector), the other, to the optical input (black
connector).

Insert the fiber ends in optical fiber connectors. After releasing the connector mounting nut, push the
fiber until it stops and tighten the mounting nut.

The procedure for checking the condition of the optical fiber loops is described in Chapter 5.2.

8.3. Installation of communication lines

8.3.1. RS-485 link

A shielded twisted-pair cable of 100 Ohm impedance is recommended for RS-485 links (e.g., CAT6
STP cable as used in Ethernet networks). Unshielded wire may be used for short connections (e.g.,
inside a cabinet, box, or a panel) where generation of strong electromagnetic fields is not possible
during a short-circuit. The wiring diagram is presented in Chapter 7.

8.3.2. Optical link

Plastic shielded optical MCO-XX is used for optical links. The wiring diagram is presented in
Chapter 7.

- 19 - ELGA UAB
Arc Fault Protection System NOLA-03-M (soft. ver. 1.06)

8.4. Setup

Device parameters are set according to instruction in Chapter 6, Operation Mode Menu Items.

The state of the fiber optic sensors can be assessed by monitoring the display (menu items OPT1 and
OPT2, see ch. 5.2). The "Test" parameter shows the amplitude of the illumination pulse in percent. The
system works reliably if the amplitude of the lighting pulse is within 8% ... 100%. If the amplitude is
less than 4%, an IRF signal is generated. The reason for the low illumination signal may be
incompletely connected fiber optic connections (the end of the fiber optic cable does not rest on the
photocell), improperly polished fiber optic ends, steep bending angles of the fiber optic cable, or
mechanical damage to the fiber optic cable.

A current generator with an ammeter is required for testing of the current inputs. Connect the generator
output to the corresponding input. Monitor the indicator I>START and the ammeter readings while
gradually increasing the current. The indicator I>START illuminates when the preset current is
exceeded.

The optical fiber part can be tested with a powerful photo flash based on the principle of electric arc
(such as Canon 430EX). Position the flash at 0.3m …0.5m from the optical sensor, in the outermost
point away from the optical input of NOLA-03-M. Monitor the indicators OPT-1 or OPT-2 after firing
the flash. The respective indicator should illuminate for 2 seconds.

Note: Flashes integrated in cameras or mobile telephones are not suitable for testing. The system may
not detect the light pulses due to low power of such flashes and short light pulse duration.

The outputs HSO, TRIP and TRIP DEL are tested under simulated conditions of an electric arc, i.e., by
simultaneous sending of both light and current signals.

9. Maintenance

It is recommended to check the functionality of the device every 5 years or according to the law.

If the device is operating in a particularly dusty environment, it is recommended to check the reaction
to light exposure with a photoflash every 3 years. If necessary, wipe the dusty part of the optical fiber
with a damp cloth.

The integrity of fiber optic loops is checked automatically. If the fiber is damaged, the light indicator
OPT1 or OPT2 flashes and the indicator IRF lights up. A damaged fiber optic cable must be replaced.

NOLA-03-M has an internal self-diagnosis function. In the event of an internal fault, the “POWER”
indicator light will flash and the “IRF” indicator will be on. In this case, the device must be replaced.
