The republic of Honduras has the institute of administration Forestal (IFA). This
institute is in charge of a department of protected wildlife areas, which is in
charge of regulating and managing the flora and wildlife fauna that are the
country´s protected areas.
Punta Izopo National Park is located on the north coast of Honduras, at the east
end of Tela Bay. Its name derives from a small mountain that dominates the
area - the Izopo Mountain. Punta Izopo is the second largest natural reserve in
Tela Bay, covering an area of 112 km², of which approximately half is a buffer
area and half an untouchable core area. The park was declared by the Ramsar
Convention as the Wetland of International Interest No. 812 in 1996. Since then
it has been protected and acquired a greater presence. Punta Izopo is one of
the ten priority protected areas for biodiversity conservation in Honduras.
Located on the watershed of the Río Plátano, the reserve is one of the few
remains of a tropical rainforest in Central America and has an abundant and
varied plant and wildlife. In its mountainous landscape sloping down to the
Caribbean coast, over 2,000 indigenous people have preserved their traditional
way of life. The natural beauty of Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is a function
of the variety of the terrain and landscape types and features. Within its
boundaries, the property harbours densely forested mountains reaching 1,418
m.a.s.l. at Punta Piedra, transitioning into savannahs, patches of pine forest
and vast wetlands towards the coastal plains of the Caribbean Sea. Along the
coast, there are spectacular lagoons, namely Laguna Brus and Laguna Ibans,
both full of wildlife, boasting major bird colonies and serving as nurseries for fish
and many other forms of aquatic life.
