SAMPLE PROBLEM 9
A centrifugal pump operating under steady flow condition delivers 2,270 kg/min of water
from an initial pressure of 82,740 Pa to final pressure of 275,800 Pa. The diameter of the inlet
pipe to the pump is 15.24 cm and the diameter of the discharge is 10.16. What is the work in
KJ/min.?

Find work in KJ/min

SOLUTION
We need to use the formula of energy balance which is:

∑ energy entering the system=∑ energy leaving the system

KE 1 + PE 1+Wf 1+ W =KE 2 + PE 2+ Wf 2

We need to cancel out PE since it will not be used on the problem so the equation would be:
KE 1 +Wf 1 +W =KE 2 +Wf 2

In order to get KE, we must use the formula:

1 2
KE= m v
2
Equation per unit mass of KE:
2
KE 1 v
=ke1= 1
m 2

KE 2 v 22
=ke2=
m 2

We need to solve the velocities at 2 points using mass flow rate equation:
ṁ= Avρ
A = cross-sectional area of the pipe
v = velocity of the fluid
ρ = density of the fluid

As the problem said that it has equal mass flow rate entering and exiting, the equation would be:
ṁ=ṁ1=ṁ2

In conclusion, they are same fluid and same flowrate:

ṁ= A 1 v1 ρ = A2 v 2 ρ

Determining the velocities of 2 points:

V 1=
A1 ρ

37.833 kg /sec
= π ( 0.1524 )2 ( 1000 kg )
4 m3
V 1 = 2.0740 m/s

V 2=
A2 ρ
37.833 kg /sec
= π ( 0.1016 m )2 ( 1000 kg )
4 m3
V 2= 4.6666 m/s

Determining the kinetic energy of 2 points:

m 2
(2.0740 )
ke 1=
2
s
( 1 kg1 m/s
N
2)( 10001 KJNm )
ke 1=¿ 2.5107 ×10−3 KJ/kg

2
m
( 4.6666 )
ke 2=
2
s 1N
1 kg m/s
2 ( )( 10001 KJNm )
ke 1=0.01089 KJ /kg

Using flow work equation:

W f =Pv

P = Pressure
v = Specific volume

As we said earlier, the fluid is same so we can use same specific volume of water:
1
v = v1 =v 2= ρ

Determining the flow work per unit mass;

W f 1=¿)
( 1N 1 KJ
1 kg m/s 1000 Nm
2 )( )
W f 1=0.08274 KJ /kg
W f 2=¿)
( 1N
)( 1 KJ
1 kg m/s 1000 Nm
2 )
W f 1=0.2758 KJ /kg

Determining work per unit mass:

KE 1 +Wf 1 +W =KE 2 +Wf 2

W =KE 2+Wf 2−KE 1−Wf 1

Substituting to the equation:

KJ KJ −3
W =0.01089 +0.2758 −2.1507 × 10 KJ /kg−0.08274 KJ / kg
kg kg
W = 0.2018 KJ/kg

Determining the power:

P = ṁw

Ẇ = P = ṁw

Substituting to the equation:

Ẇ = 2270 kg/min (0.2018 KJ/kg)

Ẇ = 458.09 KJ/min Work done on the system
