Tutorial 1 Due date: 03/03/2021

1. The resultant force of coplanar concurrent force system shown in Fig. 1 is zero. Determine the
force F and its angle θ.

Fig. 1

2. A 10 N block is suspended from two springs as shown in Fig. 2. Each having an unstretched length
of 4 m and stiffness of k = 5 N/m. Determine the angle θ for equilibrium.

Fig. 2

3. A car is pulled by two ropes as shown in Fig. 3. If the cable AB can withstand a maximum tension
3750 N, determine the tension in cable AC and its angle with horizontal θ so that the resultant
force 6000 N is directed along X-axis.
Fig. 3
4. Block 2 rests on block 1 and is attached by a horizontal rope AB to the wall as shown in Fig 4. What
force P is necessary to cause motion of block 1 to impend? The coefficient of friction between the
blocks is 1/3 and between the floor and block 1 is 1/4. Mass of blocks 1 and 2 are 20 kg and 10 kg
respectively. (5 marks)

5. A roller of radius 30 cm weighing 25 kN is to be pulled over a rectangular obstruction of height 15

cm as shown in Fig. 5 by a force P applied tangentially at its crest C, through a string wound around
the circumference of the roller. Find the force P required just to turn the wheel over the comer of
the obstruction. Also determine the magnitude and direction of the reactions at A and B. Surfaces
may be taken as smooth.

6. A sphere of 60 N weight is supported by three wires as shown in fig. 6. Determine the tension in
cables AB, AC and AD.
