Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project

The Final Major Project (Year One)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name
Louis Clark

Disciplines Primary: I will primarily be using Video.

(primary/secondary Secondary: I will partly be using Animation.
) Sound: Although I don’t plan to include narrative, I do plan
(e.g. video, to use some kind of NCS music that matches with it.

animation,
cinemograph, time-
lapse etc. )
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
Throughout all the Units, I have learnt a-lot of aspects which will apply to my FMP Project, including
Theory and Practical Information. One key thing I have learnt since starting the course and that will
assist me in my Project is understanding the importance of target audiences. For example, the use
of Psychographics to identify what group / type of people something is directed towards, or a
specific age group. This information is important as it influences what you include like colours,
products, etc. I have additionally learnt new skills since starting the course. This includes soft skills
like Teamwork which I have got better with since being required to work with others on projects on
multiple occasions. I also feel I have got better with certain software such as Premier Pro for Video
Editing. As I feel that I have learnt various new skills on Premier Pro, it has influenced me partly to
focus most of my project on a Video.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

The concept I have involves the elements of nature (fire, air, water, earth). I want to portray the
importance of these elements in everyday life through the form of video by recording footage of
people using the elements in everyday life (e.g. someone drinking water, etc). This means I need to
include various colours such as green, red, etc. I plan to include additional content in-between to
include other themes such as splashes of coloured powder to apply the theme of colour. I plan to
loop this by speeding up the time the clips spend on the screen, then slowing them back down to
normal by reversing the footage and looping it with the first clip. I also plan to include some aspects
of Animation inside the video to make it more interesting and include more of the skills I’ve learnt
throughout the course. I will research various things to assist me in this, such as how everyday
activities relate to each element. I plan to use various resources to complete this project. This
includes a camera that I plan to borrow from the College, The Animation Drawing Tablet from the
College Animation Room and potentially a tri-pod when recording. In order to get to the point of
presentation, I will use the software and resources I have available in order to create a looping
video that I will be able to showcase on exhibition day. I will need to use equipment such as a
camera and potentially a tri-pod, and I will also be required to travel to and from different locations
to get the shots I am after. I additionally plan to introduce some people I chose into the video to use
the props to put across the message behind the video. Prior to exhibition day, I will need to decide
what props I want to decorate my workspace with. They will most likely be relating to the elements
of nature and nature itself to relate to the video in the best way possible.
Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
As an on-going activity, I plan to reflect on my progress made via a progress diary which will
highlight the progress I make during each session and evaluate what I have managed to complete.
I will evaluate my project by not only reflecting on the decisions I took and the progress I made after
each session, but I will additionally evaluate by describing how each bit of progress each session
relates back to my statement of aims and my initial concept / ideas. At the end of the project, I plan
to write a full conclusion where I will reflect on what I have done. This final evaluation will allow me
to focus more on what I did well and what I would do differently, whereas the progress diary will
highlight how I am feeling as I go.

Proposed Research Sources

I plan to use various websites / articles to help me in my research for my project and achieve the
best possible outcome. For example, I plan to look at websites / articles about more Colour
Theory so I know I am using the right colours in the video. Additionally, I plan to look at what
images on social media have a high amount of likes to show the interests of the younger
generation and what is appealing to them.

Equipment Required
e.g., cameras, computers, software etc. Be as specific as you can with regards to software
as you may need a variety of programs.
Video Camera
Adobe Premier Pro
Adobe Animate
Tri-pod (possibly)
Resources Required

Props:
Gardening Tools
Cups
Water Containers
Fireplace

Locations:
Although all locations aren’t yet decided, I plan to use locations such as Poole Park for the Water /
Earth, an area with Wind Turbines, a residential home for water, etc.

I additionally may include shots in-between of slow-mo and fast footage of different coloured
powder of some kind flying in the air. If I do use this, it means I will require a studio / space of some
kind to do this containing a plain background and the necessary equipment to record it.

Skills to develop/learn

I feel it is important that I learn more skills in Video Editing, as most of my project will be done via
Video Editing Software. Examples of skills I would like to learn is Slow-mo and Time lapsing. I
additionally feel the obvious skill that I need and I feel I have is creativity, however I also feel that
this can always be developed.

Personnel and responsibilities

For my project, I do plan to use at least one person as an actor. At this moment in time I plan to
introduce my father into it as an actor and someone who is completing the actions, but I may
additionally look into introducing other personnel down the line.
Intended audience and context

As my intended project is planned to contain a moral message, I feel it is important

that the intended audience is younger people between the ages of 10 – 30. This is
to try and promote the importance of these elements of nature to those who are
more likely to make a difference in the future or don’t yet understand how the
elements come into every day life. This will also be for those who may have a keen
interest in nature or understanding how nature is used in everyday life by humans.

How my project will ‘loop’

For my loop, I plan to do this by starting the video with half a clip of someone
putting a plant in the ground or moving a plant. This means that when the video
reaches the end, I can finish it by including the first part of the initial footage at the
end so it loops back round.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.
4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
